Re: Union College Hockey 2014-2015 "ReUnion 2015? Why "Nott"?

Logically, it's tough to ask most of the guys on this team to fill the shoes of Ghost, Bodie, Carr, Hatch, etc this season. It's looking more and more like a rebuilding year unfortunately. The future does look bright though.
This ^

IMO we should have played Alex ....
Lets kick *** next week ... payback time
IMO It would be nice to play Dillon for a game .... he is a senior and certainly deserves it as much as anyone.
and this ^

The year is not over. ECAC is good, so are we. A strong league makes strong teams and vice versa.
We are still a bit immature right now but I won't give up until the hockey year is over !

Well ... we are the clear underdog in this one ....

" ... RPI must be considered the favorite when the teams play again Saturday night in the annual Mayor's Cup game at Times Union Center ...."

Even Schott has picked us to lose ...

No need to even show up for this one .....

Maybe this year, but both teams aren't exactly a model of consistency. RPI went south after an excellent November, then sweeps Colgate and Cornell, while Union has been a roller coaster all year long.

Because it's the ECAC, it would make sense that Union wins tomorrow...simply because that doesn't make sense.

2015-2016 recruit Brett Supinski had 3 goals and 2 assists in Coquitlam's 5-4 win over Vernon tonight.

Re: Union College Hockey 2014-2015 "ReUnion 2015? Why "Nott"?

The very worst thing a league can do is to have its teams treat non-conference games as non-consequential and then knock each other off. It is a recipe for minimizing NCAA participation and we are doing it in spades again this year.
Yep, according to the pairwise, if everything ended today, and Harvard won the tournament, the EZAC would send ONE team to the NCAAs. IMO anyone who thinks that their favorite ECAC team is going to make some sort of "magical run" is .... completely delusional.

Re: Union College Hockey 2014-2015 "ReUnion 2015? Why "Nott"?

Was looking at the team-wide stats and, while not exactly surprising, they are enlightening. Union is good offensively in almost every category - 9th in the country in scoring at almost 3.5 gpg, tops in ECAC in SOG, almost 20% PP, and good at drawing PP opportunities. However, the other side of the coin is horrendous - 40th in goals against (10th in ECAC), putrid PK at less than 80%, and 89% saves in league (neither goalie above 91%, which is really the baseline "average" that you want). Simply put, this team stinks defensively and between the pipes. Against teams that will give U some room to skate and that maybe take some bad penalties, U can do well. But teams that are good defensively and in goal and play disciplined are a ton of trouble. Tonight's game falls in the latter category and RPI has to be favored. The engineers may not be great offensively, but they are very good defensively and have been getting terrific goaltending from Kasdorf lately - not a good combo for U.

IMO the coaches need to put a much bigger emphasis on team defense and play players that are good at it, even at the expense of some offense. Defensemen jumping into the offense should be put on shorter leashes (or told not to do it in certain cases). This of course is easy for me to say, but the players available to do this are limited and many are freshmen that just haven't developed yet and haven't learned all the nuances of good defensive play. Will be interesting to see who is in the lineup tonight and if there is a new "attitude" in Union's play.

Another big change from last year is this notion of giving up leads. We were up 3-0 against Darmouth to lose 4-3. We were up 3-1 against Colgate to lose 5-4. Another problem we have are goals going in off our own players sticks/skates. Another defense stat to look at are blocked shots. We are way behind our opponenets, 237 vs 329. We are not using our bodies to block shots. Last year if we had the lead going into the 3rd, we won. RB could slip both Brodie and the Ghost in at the same time to ensire nothing made it to our goal. :) Our goal tending stats reflect that Carr, Ikila, Sullivan, Hatch were great defensive forwards and Bodie and the Ghost were all-american defensemen.

So many things had to come together for us this year that it was just not likely to happen. Expecting anything more than a .500 season was proably not realistic. I hope we are developing the next generation of skaters .... looking forward to seeing the youngins develop. :)

The one positive stat I like is that we are 6-2 on the road. The BU game was fantastic ..... we were flying .... huge turnout for us .... home ice for the playoffs may not buy us much since we generally lose at home :(

Re: Union College Hockey 2014-2015 "ReUnion 2015? Why "Nott"?

Here is hoping Roy, Di Pauli and Cruise get their first goal tonight.
Period #1. RPI 2 Union 1 - RPI 2 goals on five shots - another 6-1 blowout? Will Collins get pulled again?
Period #2. RPI 3 Union 2 - RPI 3 goals on ten shots -
Period #3. RPI 3 Union 8 - RPI 3 goals on 13 shots

Roy, di Pauli and Cruise had great games but did not score. di Pauli is a GPA 4.0 student.
Trophy retaken

Hopefully the Mayor's Cup can be the event that rallies the team together again this year.
