Just a thought .... a quick time out.

Below is a list showing won/lost/tied records at the end of last year, 2013-2014, for ECAC active college hockey coaches (College Hockey News). These figures do not include this year, 2014-2015. What is significant is reaching a 100 wins. That puts you into a special class of D1 College Hockey Coaches.

COACH - School - W - L - T - Pct.

BENNETT, RICK - Union - 80 - 27 - 16 - .715
SCHAFER, MIKE - Cornell -364 -208 - 71 - .621
ALLAIN, KEITH - Yale -155 - 95 - 24 - .609
PECKNOLD, RAND -QU -316 -200 - 62 - .600
VAUGHAN, DON - Colgate -348 -345 -80 - .502
CARVEL, GREG - St. Lawrence - 33 - 35 - 8 - .487
DONATO, TED - Harvard -136 -156 -39 - .470
GAUDET, BOB - Dartmouth -337 -388 -94 - .469
JONES, CASEY - Clarkson - 46 - 54 -17 - .466
APPERT, SETH - RPI -114 -152 -37 - .437
WHITTET, BRENDAN - Brown - 59 - 85 -23 - .422
FOGARTY, RON - Princeton - 0 - 0 - 0 - .000

RB has 4 wins thus far this year. With 16 more, which is a possibility, this year (nothing is for certain) he will reach 100 wins this year. That will put him in a special category of College Hockey coaches. The benchmark for College Hockey Coaching is of course the man who has the best D1 college hockey record of all time. Ned Harkness. :)

HARKNESS, NED - Cornell, RPI, Union, ? - 339 -123 -9 - .729

And the best record of all current active Coaches with more than 100 wins is Jeff Jackson (Lake Superior, Notre Dame)

JACKSON, JEFF - Lake Superior, Notre Dame - 390 -177 -60 - .670

OK, back to college hockey. :)

He´ll get to 150 by the time the current frosh on your team are seniors, easily. What would be interesting to see is when he surpasses Appert in wins.

You have correctly reported Ned's D-I record, but that only includes RPI and Cornell of course.

I would have to go back and check this .... but I think out of all the DI NCAA College Hockey Programs with active coaches who have also more than 100 wins, Appert is third from the bottom. I think the Army Coach and the AIC Coach were lower. May Coach Appert have a long life and coach RPI for the next 100 years ... ;)

http://www.timesunion.com/sports/article/Player-picks-up-where-he-left-off-5841397.php

Nice article on Vecks in the TU. As much as he probably can't keep up his current scoring pace, he really could have an unprecedented season by Union standards. His skill level is phenomenal and I would think 40-50+ points is not out of the question. He also plays good D and wins 2/3rds of faceoffs.. its pretty amazing how good he is as just a soph. Hopefully he will stick around another year or 2, though wouldn't bank on it.

The article also mentions something that I think was the main key to last season and continues to be one of U's "secret weapons" - that so many players return from summer break significantly improved. It really blew me away last season that not only players that had previously been 3rd or 4th liners improved, but that players like Carr, Ghost, Ciampini also were better - in Champ's case very significantly better. Its become something that I think most of us expect now, but I can tell you that this doesn't happen in most programs and certainly didn't happen much at all in U's first ~15 years in D-I. The coaches and support staff obviously do a great job of identifying players weaknesses and helping them find ways to work on them, but as Bennett says in the article, a lot is just the mindset and culture of the players/team that they're not going to just sit back and have a couple cold-ones on the dock over the summer.

Re: Union College Hockey 2014-2015 "ReUnion 2015? Why "Nott"?

I went down to Union yesterday and talked to Rick Bennett and Mike Vecchione about faceoffs, a weakness last year but a strength so far this year:

No need to pile on, his record speaks volumes.

Any word on Novak? What ever the line-up I trust the judgement of RB and his coaches. IMO I feel like if we are going to do well against St. Cloud we will have to avoid the types of mistakes freshmen make. This could be a 2-1 or 3-2 or OT game. It would do my heart well if I saw Novak return with an attitude and something to prove. Another proven senior in the lineup like Novak .... with his big game experience .....

Bennett said yesterday that Novak will "more than likely" play tomorrow. It's the first game he's eligible to play in since being suspended for a violation of team rules. But Bennett added that Novak would have to show in practice that he was going to provide value to the lineup.

In the two games Union faced Maine, Union won the face off battle in each game. The total for Union in the two games was 71 and Maine 54.

If he is going to return he has to return with the right attitude. If he returns with the right attitude and he plays to his skill level ..... that is going to be "a big shot in the arm" for us. SCSU is going to be one of the top 3 offensive teams we face this year ..... Colin will have to be at his very best ...

Go Dutchmen !!!!
