Union College Dutchmen Hockey 2010-11: There's one way and that's to Atlantic City!

Re: Union College Dutchmen Hockey 2010-11: There's one way and that's to Atlantic City!

I've been waiting a while to post because I really needed some time to sort out my thoughts after an unprecedented couple of games this weekend. Obviously it is somewhat difficult to make any hard and fast judgments, because let's face it, Sacred Heart, isn't the greatest team on ice, but on the otherhand, they aren't horrible either. It seemed apparent that although they put up a significantly better fight on Saturday, they weren't competitive with Union in any aspects of the game.

What I really am trying to get a handle on is whether this freshman group is as good as they seemed to be this weekend. I have a sneaking suspicion that they could be, but only time will tell. It is pretty apparent though that there is some heavy duty offensive talent there with Carr, Jooris and probably Sullivan as well. These could be the some of if not the most talented offensive players Union has ever seen and of course, we've seen some pretty good ones of late. I thought Ingoldsby was solid on D and Ikkala is a fairly mobile physcial type of player. Mat Bodie also seemd extremely mobile and stick savvy, though he could be a bit undersized, at least according to the program.

I haven't even gotten to Zajac, Welsh, and Prez and the others yet. Kinkaid looked sharp, Milan maybe not so much, but I'm sure he will come around.

16 goals in one game no matter what the competition is pretty darn incredible. It wasn't so many dismal seasons ago where Union couldn't score 16 goals in a month. This coming weekend in Alaska is going to be a much better gauge on just what we may have under the hood this year, though the trip itself may take something out of the boys.

I think the coaches have got to be sharing at least a few private smiles over where this recruiting class and the team seems to be at this early point, though you'd never get them to admit it. Talented frosh are fine, but they can counted on to do some weird things throughout at least the first half of the season. It is with the veterans and seniors in particular that you live or die and in that regard, I feel pretty good on what we have there.

The team successfully made it to Alaska. I am very interested to see how this weekend plays out for them.

Re: Union College Dutchmen Hockey 2010-11: There's one way and that's to Atlantic Cit

Regarding Wholin's comments on the freshmen, I am definitely optimistic, though I wouldn't go fitting them for superman capes quite yet. SHU was nowhere near as good as they were last season, and U freshmen the past few seasons have feasted on Atlantic teams only to struggle in league and OOC against the Big 3 leagues. BUT.. I certainly saw no reason to change my preseason prediction that this could be the best recruiting class U has ever had. Carr and Jooris were certainly as good as advertised and are very skillful & poised with the puck. I'm particularly high on Carr, as he has a very dynamic quality when he gets the puck AND he's essentially a true freshman 18 years old. If he develops more physically, sky's the limit. And while I wouldn't expect these two to keep up their current 70-80 point pace, they definitely are capable of putting up numbers similar to what Welsh, Wayne Simpson & Zajac put up as freshmen (15-25 points). This will go a long way toward filling the void of Walters & MVT.

As for the rest of the team, obviously not too much to complain about and a great overall effort on the weekend. I did think that the defensive intensity lapsed a bit at times (understandably) and the younger d-men struggled a bit when SHU actually pressured and got possession in the offensive zone. Not sure how Bodie and Ingoldsby will react when big teams get banging (think Cornell). On the other hand I thought Coburn and Matheson were excellent and showed real leadership getting the puck out of the zone and feeding the forwards. Also nice to see Pallos have a good weekend. The talent at forward is SO deep. And Kinkaid already looks sharp and on his game.

This weekend's games will be much sterner tests. U Alaska (Fairbanks) is very good defensively & in goal and no slouchs up front. Anchorage is maybe not quite as talented but are good sized and physical. These will be much more difficult games and should give a better indication of where the team is at.

They where at the Carlson Center and I talked with the coach and a few other team members. Said, welcome to Fairbanks and I was glad you came up here to play us!

thanks for giving our guys a warm welcome :)

Re: Union College Dutchmen Hockey 2010-11: There's one way and that's to Atlantic Cit

Our depth at forward this year is nothing short of spectacular when guys like Kyle Bodie and Sullivan aren't regulars. Very excited to see how the boys do up north this weekend!

been looking forward to this trip ever since it was announced. This is a good opportunity for the team, and here's hoping they take advantage of it. any word on media for the games? I haven't gone to the UAF site yet, but I'm sure one of you die-hards know how to at least hear the game.
You have to like how things have started out, but this is a good test to see how this team should skate this year.

GooooooU!

Here's a link to the local newspaper's article on last night's game. It sounds like Union acquitted itself well in a tightly contested game. Too bad they couldn't come out with at least a tie, but the opposition was definitely a big upgrade from last weekend. Let's hope for a better result tonight. Go U!

Re: Union College Dutchmen Hockey 2010-11: There's one way and that's to Atlantic Cit

I saw most of the first two periods, before I crashed, and from what I saw this was a very even hockey game. The boys definitely had plenty of chances to grab a win, but UAFs goaltender came up big several times. Bodie made a bad freshman mistake trying to pass the puck through the slot on UAFs first goal, which was a turning point of sorts as it tied up the game. This was compounded by U missing on several grade A chances in the 2nd period, especially on 2 PPs. Not being able to get the lead back would've helped a lot against a team like the Nanooks. UAF is a very nice team. They have a lot of speed and play strong defense, to go along with excellent goaltending. They were as good as advertised. What I saw was very entertaining hockey, as there was a lot of good flow back & forth by both teams and not a lot of clutch & grab.

Overall, I thought the team looked good, though they needed to bury more of their chances. Kinkaid looked sharp and had no chance on the goal I saw and sounds the same on the game-winner. Like the line of Prez-Zajac-W. Simpson, they were buzzing a lot but just couldn't hit the twine. Carr, Jooris & Ingoldsby looked good for the frosh. Bodie definitely has great vision and makes some pretty plays, but needs to learn what he can and cannot get away with at this level.

Hopefully a little more finish tonight will get a W. This loss could be a tough one down the line for making NCAAs, as U does not play many TUC teams out of conference. They could end up playing only one more TUC team OOC, which is too bad because this was a winnable game.

I agree with ADK11. I was at the game and left impressed with Union. Nice team, well coached, good system. The game was very entertaining. Pretty fast paced, up and down action, with few penalties. Like I said in the other thread, an odd bounce here or there, and the game goes in a different direction. As much as Union needed to bury chances, so did the Nooks. I thought we were a little faster, but otherwise pretty evenly matched. Great game and good luck to Union the rest of their season!

Union Dutchmen represented well. Good luck to your team. Especially tonight.

I posted a few photos on the Brice thread, but HERE are a few more. Not great quality but maybe they can give you a sense of being there.

BTW. The trip up to Alaska is usually not that much of an killer. But after a few days in a hotel, the long trip back east, and classroom pressures, the accumuated impact is more real. Be concerned about next weekends series if you have one. But don't feel too sorry for them, our guys do it six or seven times a year. They're young, they can handle it. :)

And for us locals, the game is being broadcast on WVKZ-AM 1240. It's amazing the amount of delay there is between Teamline and the radio. I'm in the den listening on the computer, and spouse is in the living room listening on the radio.

Was wishing for more than a split but it's still a good weekend when you can go across the continent and pick up a win. Looking to keep the momentum up next weekend against RIT and Niagara, Lets go U!

Re: Union College Dutchmen Hockey 2010-11: There's one way and that's to Atlantic Cit

It was tough to get a real feel for the games, but all in all I guess it was a decent weekend's result. Two wins would have been nice but two losses would have been a bitter pill to swallow after all that time and travel. Sounds like we just held on last night and that KK came up big in the final period when U was outshot 18-2 after giving up a 3 goal lead. I imagine the boys may have been running on fumes by the end of the game what with the travel and all. Next weekend at home with Niagara and RIT should be an entertaining weekend. Let's hope U can keep the good efforts coming. I'll be interested to see if Corey gets a start, perhaps against Niagara, Friday night.
