Re: Union College Dutchmen Hockey 2010-11: There's one way and that's to Atlantic City!
I've been waiting a while to post because I really needed some time to sort out my thoughts after an unprecedented couple of games this weekend. Obviously it is somewhat difficult to make any hard and fast judgments, because let's face it, Sacred Heart, isn't the greatest team on ice, but on the otherhand, they aren't horrible either. It seemed apparent that although they put up a significantly better fight on Saturday, they weren't competitive with Union in any aspects of the game.
What I really am trying to get a handle on is whether this freshman group is as good as they seemed to be this weekend. I have a sneaking suspicion that they could be, but only time will tell. It is pretty apparent though that there is some heavy duty offensive talent there with Carr, Jooris and probably Sullivan as well. These could be the some of if not the most talented offensive players Union has ever seen and of course, we've seen some pretty good ones of late. I thought Ingoldsby was solid on D and Ikkala is a fairly mobile physcial type of player. Mat Bodie also seemd extremely mobile and stick savvy, though he could be a bit undersized, at least according to the program.
I haven't even gotten to Zajac, Welsh, and Prez and the others yet. Kinkaid looked sharp, Milan maybe not so much, but I'm sure he will come around.
16 goals in one game no matter what the competition is pretty darn incredible. It wasn't so many dismal seasons ago where Union couldn't score 16 goals in a month. This coming weekend in Alaska is going to be a much better gauge on just what we may have under the hood this year, though the trip itself may take something out of the boys.
I think the coaches have got to be sharing at least a few private smiles over where this recruiting class and the team seems to be at this early point, though you'd never get them to admit it. Talented frosh are fine, but they can counted on to do some weird things throughout at least the first half of the season. It is with the veterans and seniors in particular that you live or die and in that regard, I feel pretty good on what we have there.
