It's painful to see players leave, especially after making, as a fan, emotional investment in their success. It's also painful to see four other ECAC teams go ahead and play out the year and wonder if we could have done the same. For Dutchmen hockey to sustain success it needs the aggressive support of all consistencies (administration, alumni, faculty, students, fans, community, league, trustees, parents, players, etc.) The support has to go the extra mile to make the program a success. To compete in D1, the program has to be elevated, and all parties have to focus on its success. As a school Union has an inflated opinion of its academic strength and purity of purpose. If Colgate and Clarkson and St Lawrence and Qpack can find a way, so should we. When the administration makes a decision, does it fully understand the ramifications? In the Boston area, Union's hockey team put us on the map and established name recognition. What benefits did that accrue to the school? Without that unity of purpose and without steadfast commitment to its success, I am worried that the program will slip into mediocracy or beyond.
