Union College: 2020-2021

This is the Union College "Dutchmen" hockey thread for 2020-2021. With the announcement of the incoming freshmen class, its time to roll over to 2020-2021 season

And the Boys are back on the ice. Some new faces but some from last year are missing???? Let's hope they get some games rolling.

"With today’s announcement that the Liberty League has cancelled league winter competition and championships, we regret to announce that Union has made the very difficult decision to cancel intercollegiate athletics competition for our basketball, swimming & diving, and indoor track & field teams this season. ECAC hockey league members continue to engage in discussions and are aiming for decisions on the upcoming season in mid-November."

I don't think the Ivy's will allow it. At the rate, it is spreading in colleges in the Northeast, I don't see it happening this year. Maybe without fans?

"In other news, Sean Farrell had two goals and an assist, but it was not enough as the Chicago Steel dropped a 10-8 decision to the Muskegon Lumberjacks in the opening game of the USHL season opener Saturday.

Farrell, who was the Canadiens’ fourth-round pick this year, has committed to Harvard University and was playing in the USHL to get some ice time before the college season began. Those plans have changed because the Ivy League announced that it was cancelling all winter sports and Farrell will remain with the Steel.

The Ivy League decision creates a serious problem for the ECAC hockey league because six of its 12 member schools are Ivies."

UNION RELEASES UPDATE ON 2020-21 ICE HOCKEY SEASON
SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - Union College will not participate in intercollegiate men's and women's ice hockey competition during the 2020-21 school year, the College announced on Tuesday afternoon.

"This was an incredibly difficult and disappointing decision that we had to make in the best interest of our entire community, a decision that I was heartbroken to deliver to our student-athletes earlier today," said Director of Athletics Jim McLaughlin '93. "The pandemic continues to affect all aspects of our daily lives and unfortunately intercollegiate athletics, like many other extracurricular pursuits that students are passionate about on our campus, is not immune."

NZ article about RPI's Owen Savory going to UML mentions that Jack Adams would be entering the transfer portal. https://www.neutralzone.net/mens/202...ory-in-portal/

Adams to Providence: https://twitter.com/J_Danglefest2/status/1331388651519950848 I know some Union fans who had privately concluded that Adams was transferring some time ago, and Providence was the likely target. Most people are aware that his brother, who passed away a couple of years ago, was on PC's 2015 championship team. The Schenectady Daily Gazette is reporting that Jack Adams will wear his brother's old number at PC.

It's painful to see players leave, especially after making, as a fan, emotional investment in their success. It's also painful to see four other ECAC teams go ahead and play out the year and wonder if we could have done the same. For Dutchmen hockey to sustain success it needs the aggressive support of all consistencies (administration, alumni, faculty, students, fans, community, league, trustees, parents, players, etc.) The support has to go the extra mile to make the program a success. To compete in D1, the program has to be elevated, and all parties have to focus on its success. As a school Union has an inflated opinion of its academic strength and purity of purpose. If Colgate and Clarkson and St Lawrence and Qpack can find a way, so should we. When the administration makes a decision, does it fully understand the ramifications? In the Boston area, Union's hockey team put us on the map and established name recognition. What benefits did that accrue to the school? Without that unity of purpose and without steadfast commitment to its success, I am worried that the program will slip into mediocracy or beyond.

Happy New Year to All. As the student/athletes prepare to return for the Winter term, they are looking at loosing a number of their teammates. Adams and Foo gone. Schmidt just announced to Minnesota. A number of the others in the transfer portal. Some of the players with Junior eligibility remaining possibly finishing the year in Junior, and possibly looking for another spot for next year. Then there are the seniors finishing off their degrees without the prospect of wearing the jersey in a game again. This is truly a tough year for small programs like Union. The team will look much different next year. This is where true fans need to step up.

September is only six months away. If the ECAC starts anew again it will be interesting how teams sort out. We have lost so many players, it has got to hurt. I wonder if it were the right decision to close up shop this season. Certainly, Clarkson, Colgate, Saint Lawrence and Qpack didn't think so. I am very pessimistic about next year. I am glad I took time off to follow the team during its championship year. I will never forget Philadelphia. Unfortunately, I think we will only have old memories to cling to until we rebuild if that is even possible.
