Union College: 2017-2018

Re: Union College: 2017-2018

We made the game so much harder than it needed to be for yourselves... sigh... We need to figure out a way to play all 60 minutes and not just random spurts... This was hard to watch.
On the positive side, I really like the group of freshmen we have!

Let's play a full game tonight against a group of ****ed off bobcats!

Let's go Union!

That seems to be one of the rules for Union hockey teams.. Wouldn't want to put up 6 or 7
and make it easy... Gotta mix in some silly turnover when you are last guy back, pass the puck to a guy 3 feet away
with 2 opponents in between or take foolish penalties when you are ahead.

Guess we just need to chalk it up as learning experiences - just wish we didn't need to repeat the lesson every game..

This is a very young team - and you really need to be pleased with the freshmen and Sophomores have fit in and contributed..

And what could be more fun than "a group of ****ed off bobcats" ... that picture just won't go away..

Re: Union College: 2017-2018

If we come out tonight and play the same way we did in the first period last night, we will be down 3-0 before we know it and don't count on Q's defence giving up points after last night.

We should have been down 3-0 last night? The guy between the pipes made some huge saves to prevent that..
The defense really needs to try the old "clear the porch" thing.. That standing and watching isn't the way to go..

Re: Union College: 2017-2018

IMO, 2 keys for tonight: keep QU on the outside and block shots (they threw 39 shots on goal yesterday), stay out of the box (QU is 2 for 5 yesterday)

Re: Union College: 2017-2018

Four big ones (points) for the Dutchmen...the ECAC looks incredibly competitive. Cornell is cooking with gas along with Clarkson. Colgate is giving notice that their pre-season ranking is bunk. Union’s scoring is well spread out. Just maybe things are beginning to gel. It’s going to be interesting!
On to Grand Forks...with a sharp knife.

Interesting to watch: Virtually all of those "Biggest Hockey Hits Ever" would result in penalties (many of them Majors) in today's game....

Moreover, many of those that aren't penalties put the defender so far out of position he wouldn't be able to recover given the emphasis on speed.

Like some of the older ones from back in the day when men were men and sheep were scared!!!

Re: Union College: 2017-2018

Last year against BU Scarfo was everywhere putting (slamming) the body on the much larger BU forwards and defensemen as they were skating out of the zone. Even though we lost, to a heavily depleted BU team, IMO I though that Scarfo was the best player on the ice. This weekend, at critical junctures in both games, Scarfo came up with big goals that changed the momentum in our favor. Q is always tough and you don't want to play catchup hockey with them with their defensive skill. Coming out smoking and getting on the scoreboard first was absolutely critical. With Princeton, erasing their first period lead was critical at the start of the second period.

Scarfo is well on his way to his best offensive season. What a remarkable leader. What a totally unselfish player. He is also one tough character. I am often amazed we are able to attract outstanding players and outstanding young men like Ryan Scarfo to our program.

We only have three seniors on the ice, Brassard, Scarfo and Light and they are stepping up to provide leadership for this very young team.

10 points in league play are huge at this point but we still have 5 games against Clarkson, Cornell and Colgate, none of which have lost a game in league play and the rest of the ECAC with teams as talented as those three.

I am also always amazed at what a freshmen class can mean for a team.

Re: Union College: 2017-2018

A very nice and convincing win. Good discipline on the ice, good communication, good speed, good passes, lots of people able to contribute in offense and defense, and good goaltending (barely any rebounds, the puck just seemed to be sticking to Hanson).
A good reference point for this season IMO.

Re: Union College: 2017-2018

All the freshmen have scored except for Brierly who has not played. All the active players except for Light, Burton and Newhouse have scored. Dufour has not played. Rinaldi and Brown are worthy of any scoring line. Adams and Foo have not yet really kicked in but will. I like Brendon Taylor. He is alwasy working to set himself up around the crease to pot the garbage. In 2014 against Minnesota 7 different players scored. We just have to continue developing 4 scoring lines. Next up - two against the Fighting Sioux

Re: Union College: 2017-2018

With the youngsters getting their sea legs, the primacy of Union coaching is beginning to emerge. Though there is a lot of hockey to be played, the Dutchmen look to be reckoned with. A strong showing in Grand Forks would really say something.

Niagara is not doing that bad. I wonder if they can knock off Cornell tonight?

Niagara up 1-0 whoops tied up 1-1
Game over ... Niagara led just about all the way but a few quick goals by Cornell. Note ... the home refs in Ithaca are worthy of at least two goals. Playing in Elynah is a joke. I wonder how much Cornell pays the refs. Cornell Sucks !!!
