Union College: 2017-2018

Re: Union College: 2017-2018

The pipes under the ice have never been replaced and are the same from 1975. The renovations in 2003 upgraded the refrigeration system, but they chose to upgrade the lockers rather than the pipes/floor. This improved things a little, but is still pretty bad and likely getting worse as the pipes age (they are now over 40 years old). Last weekend wasn't unusually warm and wasn't a huge crowd, so is not a good sign. The new renovations (if or when they happen) are supposed to take care of this. Hopefully this happens in my lifetime..

Certainly sounds like it. I hate to see what it will be like for a late season home series with a sellout. This still doesn't address the ghetto😜 Olympia machine that doesn't lay down any water. If they're having chiller issues, it's all the more reason to have two properly operating machines to get the ice made quicker so it will set up.

a new Zamboni runs about $98K and because they run on propane emit toxic gases into an enclosed arena.. (no wonder hockey fans are crazy by the 3rd period)
The Finns have an ice-cat that runs on electric to fix that problem but they go about $160K

So are you suggesting a "bake sale" or "fund raiser" to acquire a new Zamboni or two? I think it's a great idea but will probably take more than
a single season of hard fund raising to get one let alone two..

Maybe that new Casino would buy one - all decked out in an ad for them..

I wasnt "suggesting" anything. There are standards for the playing surface that sure as heck weren't being met for the UMass game. The issue seems to be 50% refrigeration and 50% machinery. The excellent players in the program deserve better. It's the admin's job to address facility and equipment issues.

By the way , Zamboni makes several electric models, right here in North America. Get your apron out and start baking!

Should have fined the girl that was chucking T-shirts on that one televised game. :p:D

I know you weren't suggesting - but it was such a perfect segway - I just couldn't resist...
Couldn't agree more that the athletes deserve better - even before a period starts you can see cracks and ruts in the ice..
Couldn't disagree more that having me either put on an apron or God forbid bake would come anywhere close to a good idea..
IF the rebuild actually happens I think the refrigeration part will probably get fixed.. But college admins won't buy anything that they already have..
hence the "deal with the casino" idea to defray that cost.. Maybe Garnet Blades could approach them on a multi year deal for the ad on the machine and one on the boards
across from the camera position
It's a no lose situation for the casino considering with the streaming - people in all parts of the country will see it and include a stop there when they visit for a game..

And I just have to figure someone with ties to Garnet Blades reads this forum...

Re: Union College: 2017-2018

An article from Sunday's Albany Times Union on the casino's impact on local tax revenues... of interest to Schenectady and neighboring counties in the Capital District:

http://www.timesunion.com/local/article/State-local-promises-before-casino-vote-a-bust-12433834.php

While certainly not the final word on the venture, initial results below expectations.

Always amazed by casinos.. You need people who have money to come there to make money..
that means you either have to have a large fairly well off population nearby or have to have something to bring them to that particular area.. because with casinos
popping up all over folks will usually just choose the closest one.
Take into account that the majority of the population don't gamble or gamble in small amounts ($50 - $100 here or there) the numbers just don't
add up to 1/2 billion dollars..

Not necessarily choosing the closest one... sometimes management decisions can affect whether or not you go to a particular casino. I heard on another thread that Rivers was very stingy when they started out, and that'll kill off any sort of momentum you might hope to gain. Game rules can also have an effect, as well as how much you try to cater to all different economic classes; I'm sure the high roller isn't going to see a grand time in scenic Schenectady. And what about the other perks in return? That's how you get people to come back.

"scenic Schenectady" -- Hold on - I'm trying to imagine that..

I recall this is the time of the year that General Electric illuminates the sign atop Building 2 in green and red lights... Makes for quite a sunset...

Hope everyone enjoyed a Merry Christmas and Happy Chanukkah. This is such a festive time of the year.

MAVERICKS CLOSE 2017 WITH NO. 19 UNION
We usually don't do well coming off of Christmas Break. Lots of cobwebs - should impact both teams.

The Mavericks have played 8 doubleheaders this year and seven times won the first game of the two-game set.
The Mavericks have given up 5 or more goals in each of their last 4 games.

Nebraska is horse country and its time for us to get "back in the saddle" ;)
