Union at St. Cloud, 12/13 & 12/14

Big win for Union.

St. Cloud fans: Did SCSU play poorly or was Union just the better team? I didn't get to watch.

Maybe a little bit of both? Union started strong and capitalized on the 4 pp's they got in the first. SCSU seemed to find their game in the 2nd and controlled play, but were limited in good scoring chances. Thought we were in for a great 3rd, but you give up a bad goal :43 seconds in and things seem to go to hell.

How was it a bad goal?
It was deflected off one of our guys and completely changed direction, there wqas no way in the world Faragher was stopping that.
We didn't play well to be sure, but man did Union get some puck luck.
3 goals that deflected off players in front, one of them off at least 2 guys, don't think I've ever seen that many in a game before.
Union was the better team, but I don't think the game was as far apart as the score indicated.

What do I need to spell out for you? This clown kept bashing the ECAC last spring and threw some negative rep my way. Just checking to see his latest thoughts. I'll stop or he might bring up the ECAC record during the Kennedy administration.

I meant more bad timing than bad goal, should have clarified that. I agree, no way Faragher is to blame on that. But after the way they played in the 2nd, I was confident about the 3rd. That goal deflated any momentum.

Get over it.

I'd agree with that assessment. Looked like SCSU had no jump in the 1st period and Union was all over them. After that a pretty even game. The reffing last night was "strange" to say the least.. nice to see it isn't just ECAC refs. IMO half the penalties called shouldn't have been. Huskies are a very talented team and tonight will be interesting.

..and just to clarify for everyone, Johnk is a RPIer, not a Union fan.

Re: Union at St. Cloud, 12/13 & 12/14

Gotta play our game tonight to salvage a split. That 1st period last night ruined us. Stay out of the box, because Union is gonna make us pay.

That's because you clowns were chest - pounding in every thread. As if the ECAC hadn't properly recognized for its non - existent accomplishments up until Pittsburgh. Your conference had a very good year. Now let's see if it was a trend or mirage.

And I am not doubting I gave you negative rep. You seem like quite the jack-***.

Re: Union at St. Cloud, 12/13 & 12/14

I thought it was a bizarre game with little energy in the building.

Both teams were feeling each other out and were playing disciplined hockey. We started out taking a bunch of bad penalties in spots that didn't matter. Anytime we got momentum we committed a stupid penalty. 5 on 5 I thought both teams were very disciplined and evenly matched.

We made some bad decisions in our own zone basically passing it in the direction of the only Union player in the zone when they changed a few times.

A couple players struggled early but then played better later. I would have taken Daly over Rabey on D. He seemed to be getting in trouble all over early and then goes on his 1 on 5 tirade which gets the others standing around or he gets picked and we are scrambling. I think Prochno and Kosilla had the same trouble, might have been someone else. Basically no one back for support. Credit Union's transition d and speed.

The Dowd cross check early and the one later in front of the net when we had a scramble and the Prow interference on the power play(which I thought the Union player sold perfectly) were particularly tough to take.

We won the faceoff battle and shots were even despite having 6 more minutes in penalties. The third period goal early was the killer.

I also thought Milan was going to play. He always seems to generate some energy.

Big test tonight to see how the boys respond. Hopefully we limit the bad decisions because Union has a good and speedy transition game.

Looking at the box scores against comparable opponents I thought the polls were a little off. I think the eastern teams look a little stronger than the polls suggest. I also think there is a big bias with the big name teams, especially this early in the season.

Hey yeah...the building looked half-empty on TV. Were there like 3500 people there?

Roughly.
Not surprising as finals are next week and it's not like Union is a name opponent around here to bring out the casual fan.

4265 was the announced, and that seemed about right.

It's the push-and-pull of college athletics right now. $25/ticket for a team that, while very good, is one nobody there had heard of, is just too expensive to fill that building, and it has really killed the atmosphere there. But a 2/3s full arena at $25/ticket brings in more revenue than a full arena at half that cost, and SCSU needs all the money they can get to afford being in a "national conference" and renovate their arena, and pay for their other sports.

But there's no reason that all the student sections weren't jam-packed (including the upper deck ones). We're #1 in the nation for god's sake. I missed ONE home game in the 6 years I went to St. Cloud. Darn kids these days.

Re: Union at St. Cloud, 12/13 & 12/14

What was the issue with the review of Unions second goal? The commentators thought it might have been Unions Sullivan hitting goalies glove but replay was not clear. Not sure if anything came out post game to clarify.

$25 seems a lot for a ticket but the students must get discounted or free I imagine.
