Re: UNH Wildcats-The Back Nine and Beyond!
Would I be wrong to suggest they SHOULD sweep?
I have to say you guys have been great in giving me plenty of information to help get caught up with the program. I am not sure why I haven't taken a longer look at this or other relevant threads...my bad for sure.
Yes, they SHOULD. I know Darius enjoyed my call that 6-0 was staring them in the face - but they should expect to be the better team on the ice for each of the next two weekends. Sweeping UML was nice (though we have no idea who the River Hawks will be this season), but if you want to be the team UNH players and coaches are talking about being you have to beat the team's you're supposed to beat. That means most of the non-conference schedule and certainly Colgate and CC. That does NOT mean I think they will end up 6-0. I wouldn't be surprised at all if they end up 4-2-0, or worse, through six games. We all hope the first weekend was an indication that this team is on an improving trend, but as young as they are and with so many players filling new roles there will undoubtedly be steps backwards even if they ultimately end up trending forward...
Colgate and CC represent games they should win, but they aren't pushovers. Colgate beat and tied Merrimack last weekend and CC split in Vermont. Still, these are even less experienced clubs with significant issues putting pucks in the net.
As far as this weekend is concerned, Colgate finished 56th in scoring last season with 2.11 goals per game (CC was 58th). They scored 78 goals total and graduated 33. If UNH shows the same commitment and improvement in its own end, they should easily limit goals against. Colgate blasted Niagara in the opener, but scored just four goals in two games against Merrimack. Their goalie is new to the workhorse role, but was good in ten games last season (2.45 GAA, .918 SPCT). The Raiders finished 38th in goals against last season, allowing essentially 3 goals per game. Three each night should be enough for two more Wildcat wins, but somehow a split seems more likely for a team that even IF it has improved still has a lot of growing to do.
For UNH to sweep - the defense has to continue to be a strength and the first-line/first-PP needs to score. They severely limited UML scoring chances last weekend and that needs to be true again against Colgate. The scoring balance was nice, but your big guns need to show up consistently for any type of sustained offensive success.
As far as next weekend, I'll see CC this weekend against Anchorage, but I imagine they are still a horrible team...
