Re: UNH Wildcats TD Garden and Beyond 2015

ZURICH (WIS) - For the third straight day, shock waves struck UNH Athletics today when wholly unsubstantiated reports from deported foreign WIS operatives holed up in nearby Lucerne indicated that current UNH AD Marty "Blue Skies" Scarano has drawn the attention of the FIFA Executive Committee as a potential successor to His Eminency Franz Josef "Shep" Bladder, who stepped down yesterday as FIFA president-for-life amidst rumors of developing FBI, Interpol and NCAA investigations into possible bribery approaching his doorstep.

After an unusual uptick in international private passenger flights was noted by semi-literate ground crew informants at nearby Pease International Tradeport in the last 24 hours, WIS has been able to confirm that several key members of the FIFA Executive Committee met with the highly experienced UNH AD at the Coat of Arms pub in Downtown Portsmouth late last evening to sound Scarano out about his potential interest in the top job - universally recognized as the most prominent post in global sports. Sources at the Coat - who have contributed to this latest travesty of a report on the condition of anonymity - report that the men spent several hours discussing Monsieur Scarano's vast experience, including his little-known connections with "the beautiful game". They were reportedly impressed with his 37 years of experience in sports management settings, his ability to build alliances between conflicting factions, and his tireless commitment to building and/or improving upon world-class athletic facilities. Most impressive to the committee, however, was apparently Scarano's ability to pull the strings to get a family member appointed as the head coach of the perennial NHIAA Division 6 powerhouse Effingwoods HS Girls Soccer program in recent months. The leader of the search committee slurred that Scarano "kicked all ze boshes" for the job.

The timetable for replacement of Herr Bladder as FIFA president-for-life is believed to be either late 2015 or early 2016, which would be smack-dab in the middle of the flagship UNH Men's Football AND Men's Hockey programs' respective seasons, which is believed to have emerged as a potential sticking point in the discussions. The executive committee task force is believed to have since flown off to other global destinations (including Central Falls RI, Gary IN and Chestnut Hill MA) to sound out other potential candidates.

As the world continues to revolve around the sleepy (almost narcoleptic) college town of Durham this week, local WIS operatives reached out to UNH President-for-Life Tom "Stretch" Huddleston for comment, but calls were handled by his staff, who politely informed us that he was not taking calls this week, as he continues to lobby in Concord for increased state funding of cutting-edge academic programs.

After ducking our (collect) calls yesterday, legendary UNH Men's Hockey head coach Dick Umile did return our calls today (graciously on his own dime), and expressed concerns about his sudden inability to get through to his boss in Durham. Rather than answer our inquiries about the breaking news regarding Assistant Coach Borek and AD Scarano, Umile was happy to reassure our readers that he would be spending the day golfing at beloved local landmark Mount Hood Golf Course in his hometown of Melrose MA, along with surviving '15/16 assistant captain Dan Correale, retired former UNH assistant coach Bob Norton, and reputed UNH superfan Jacques "Rabbit" Porriveau. During their day on the links, Coach Umile said he was "confident my leadership team would solve the captain thing" but would persist in their efforts "even if we need to take it to the 19th hole to get it done".

Efforts to reach Borek and Cordeiro on the emerging "CaptainGate" scandal continue to go unanswered.

Stay tuned for further breaking news as this now-international incident circles the drain ...

Re: UNH Wildcats TD Garden and Beyond 2015

Agreed, Scott. Chuck has raised the level of this thread to way over the top of all threads on this forum. Such insightful in-depth reporting is rare in this day and age. He must be really going after that radio show with Felger. And, good to hear that Jacques "Rabbit" Porriveau has been located, after his long hibernation.

Re: UNH Wildcats TD Garden and Beyond 2015

SAUGUS (WIS) - Legendary UNH Men's Hockey head coach Dick Umile called an impromptu press conference late yesterday outside Soc's Ice Cream stand to announce his leadership committee's selections to replace departing incoming senior stalwarts Collin MacDonald and Maxim Gaudreault in their respective leadership roles for the highly anticipated UNH Wildcats' 2015/2016 Hockey East season.

Flanked by the now-elevated incoming Captain Dan Correale, legendary former UNH assistant coach and NESN TV personality Bob Norton, and infamous UNH superfan Jacques "Rabbit" Porriveau - the latter curiously dressed in orange ("Eyes a beeg Clemson fan, n'est-ce pas?") and who ducked out seconds after the conference for parts unknown but headed due north - Coach Umile disclosed that incoming junior forward Jamie Hill and 5th year senior defenseman Ryan Randall had been tabbed by the blue ribbon committee to step in and lead the young but promising Wildcats on what he described as their "next step" back up towards returning the program to D-1 prominence.

"I tellya guys, we're lucky to have both Benny and Tony in the program to step in and take on dese responsibilities. It says a lot of good things about the state of our program that we can unexpectedly lose a pair of kids like Lanny and Johnny, and have a couple of guys like dese guys to step right in. Benny and Tony have both been around the block with us, and I'm confident in saying that we're really proud of what they've already accomplished, and I know dese guys are both gonna finish strong and lead the way for some of our younger and less-experienced players. Stewie couldn't be here today, but he also feels real strongly that both dese guys are the right choices."

Coach Umile would not comment further about rumors swirling about in the media regarding the current status of still-MIA Coach Borek or UNH AD Marty "Peaches" Scarano - both of whom have gone into "radio silence" status to the outside world.

In other news ... WIS did hear from representatives for UNH President Mark "Stretch" Huddleston, who told us to "expect some big news" from the visionary leader in the next 24 hours. We all wait with baited breath, no doubt ...

Re: UNH Wildcats TD Garden and Beyond 2015

Good career move. Probably only had a year or two with Umile, so getting in with a younger coach is opportune. Wonder why Souza would jump from lead assistant at U.Conn to the same 2-year horizon at UNH that Borek is leaving......

Re: UNH Wildcats TD Garden and Beyond 2015

Why not. He was hired by the Head Coach of a 3-time National Champion (Lake Superior), and the HC of a two-time National Champion runner-up (UNH). As they say in My Cousin Vinny, "third time's a charm?"

Ironic - the coach who has been roundly criticized for his recruiting on the UNH threads since he replaced McCloskey is rumored to have been chosen by the guy who is considered one of, if not the best young college coaches in the country. Isn't he too old?

Is this a tongue-in-cheek question?

He would become the heir apparent to Coach Umile upon his retirement.

Re: UNH Wildcats TD Garden and Beyond 2015

Well, as they say, time will tell. He certainly again has something longer-term to sell to recruits (including Ryczek).

As for UNH, the fundamental issues still persist, with the program still treading water in the near term and no clear draw until that is resolved in a year or three. As we see with Ryczek, it will remain hard to sell someone on Umile being their coach, and they are not even sure that the assistant who recruited them will be there in 2 years. Let's hope they can keep Farabe to give the new Head Coach at least something in the cupboard.

If Coach Borek had nothing longer-term to sell to recruits at UNH, Ryczek - to say nothing of Blackburn, Vela, Nazarian, Kelleher, Eiserman, Foegele, Tirone, Pesce, TvR, JvR, Moses, Butler, and on and on - wouldn't have chosen UNH.

There's no need for hyperbole. It's no secret that some believe UNH will never be "on the upswing" until Coach Umile retires. Some are willing to overlook Coach Borek's value, and Coach Souza and Stewart's potential value, because they are so focused on their disapproval of Coach Umile. Reasonable people can disagree on Coach Umile's value to the program.

Re: UNH Wildcats TD Garden and Beyond 2015

Ryczek taking a pass on the new jumbotron? Guess that some of us were all wrong about the recruiting influence of jumbotrons?

Re: UNH Wildcats TD Garden and Beyond 2015

Ok so this news is official I take it... Congrats to Coach Borek a tireless recruiter and coach who will be missed behind the bench. All you have to do is go to one banquet to hear the Seniors speak of his value. Working for the NC team... Cool. Thank you Scott and best wishes! Onward 'Cats!!!

Are you arguing that recruiting has been better and UNH has been better with Borek than it was with McCloskey? The list of recruits you attribute to Borek is nice, except very few are at the level of the elite McCloskey recruits and many are huge question marks still. The bigger issue at UNH since Borek's arrival has been putting together complete rosters - no question that every year they've had a handful of very good to great players, but the consistent depth of the past has not been there and its been reflected.

Borek was at UNH for 14 years and UNH's recruiting and success has trended backwards since his arrival. I have NO idea how much of that fault lies with him, but it is what it is. Since his arrival I've heard a lot of excuses as to why UNH can't compete (see the jumbotron as savior discussions) and I haven't agreed with any of them. The right recruiter can put UNH back on top of HE and in the picture for National contention.

Most of my complaints about UNH recruiting have revolved around the forwards. Lets compare the career stats of the top-10 forwards in 2002-03 (Borek's first year) vs. 2014-15 (Borek's last year).

2002-03
Lanny Gare - 137 GP, 48 G, 142 PTS
Colin Hemingway- 139 GP, 67 G, 147 PTS
Steve Saviano - 139 GP, 50 G, 117 PTS
Sean Collins - 164 GP, 77 G, 183 PTS
Jim Abbott - 141 GP, 38 G, 94 PTS
Preston Callendar - 149 GP, 62 G, 130 PTS
Nathan Martz - 137 GP, 25 G, 82 PTS
Josh Prudden - 131 GP, 33 G, 73 PTS
Justin Aikins - 154 GP, 27 G, 103 PTS
Patrick Foley - 143 GP, 23 G, 47 PTS

2014-15
Tyler Kelleher - 76 GP, 23 G, 58 PTS*
Grayson Downing - 144 GP, 56 G, 112 PTS
Matt Willows - 130 GP, 45 G, 90 PTS
Andrew Poturalski - 40 GP, 14 G, 29 PTS*
Casey Thrush - 151 GP, 20 G, 63 PTS
Dan Correale - 109 GP, 11 G, 39 PTS*
Warren Foegel - 34 GP, 5 G, 16 PTS*
Shane Eiserman - 35 GP, 4 G, 15 PTS*
Kyle Smith - 73 GP, 6 G, 19 PTS*
Collin MacDonald - 51 GP, 5 G, 10 PTS*

Borek leaving is a non-issue for me, he didn't get enough top talent or enough depth, especially lately (good for him if he can do that at PC) - for UNH its all about the next guy (Souza or otherwise) and whether he can do the job at a higher level...

* obviously some of the current players have seasons ahead of them to build career totals - but aside from Kelleher & Poturalski who ends up in the same sphere as the players from 2002-03?? Downing probably belongs, but not near the top with Gare, Hemingway, Collins & Saviano. Willows was Prudden with a lot of first-line opportunity, instead of a third-line career. Foley had something like 21 knee surgeries limiting his point total...
