UNH Wildcats Official Wait til Next Year...14/15 thread

Re: UNH Wildcats Official Wait til Next Year...14/15 thread

Believe it or not, it was a UNH fan that came up with that name, and Pooley even acknowledged it at some point (Jon might chime in if he's still around :) )

No kidding, Josh. I didn't know that! Always figured it was Jon. Funny how the name has stuck all these years later, and despite one fairly significant renovation. Seems "The Coffin" has stood the test of time - apparently like its namesake. :(

Looks like the Prov. thread got closed (quota?) .... and nobody wants to start a new thread. Denial does works some time ......

What I didn't include was the results after UNH beat Providence in 1990. The next weekend was a trip to the Garden to face BC. Except the games were moved to Conte Forum because of an outbreak of measles on several college campuses around New England. I never understood why moving the venue was going to reduce the likelihood of the measles spreading but whatever. UNH faced BC, found themselves up by two with about 6 minutes to go in the third. BC came on, tied the game near the end of regulation, then won it early in OT. Tough loss, but considering where UNH had been the previous 3 or 4 years, it was not that hard to take. As an aside, that semi-final was the last game coached by Bob Kullen.

I remember these two weekends vividly. About 50 guys from my fraternity rented school buses for both weekends, stocked them with large cylindrical containers of frothy adult beverages, and made and out-and-back trip to the coffin for the 2-0 win, and then an out-and-back to Conte.

Highlights:

1. Since we chose to wear sport coats (NO idea why), a few of us had no problem gaining admission to some special club at the Coffin. Played ourselves off as recent PC grads.

2. Post the BC loss, angry and stuck trying to get the bus off the lot fromConte, some popped-collar sparky in a brand new red Acura started heckling us from his window. "Long ride home, losers", etc. etc. he seemed to forget that we were a bus load of intoxicated frat boys with 16 ounce cups of Meister Brau in our hands, and multiple opened windows on the bus. Ugliness ensued. His wipers worked extra duty, and I'm sure his first trip the next day was to the car wash.

3. After the PC game, we made a stop at a certain establishment on Route 1 in Saugus/Peabody that catered to ahem, "gentlemen". Our visit was so unpopular that when we tried again the following week, the manager came TEARING out of the front doors, while we were driving in, screaming at the bus driver to get the $&@k out of his parking lot.

Ahhhh, not the proudest moments. But, memories nonetheless.

Bad, bad, boy ;) I see what you are doing there...

Seriously though, what a way to finish off a great career at UNH for Downing. A win in your last game at home and a sweet goal to cherish for the rest of your life. Happy for him:)

Priceless DC. I would have enjoyed being on that bus!

Think we'll just jump in here. You apparently missed the new Providence thread...

It was Jon who got the PC crowd using "The Coffin." But it was fun to see Pooley using the term as he was quoted in the local press.

I might have ripped it off from Gibber. That was too good not to use.

Anyone making the trek to PC? Got tix for Fri/Sat...if it goes three just can't do the late night game Sunday unfortunately. So guess the 'Cats need to do it in 2 :D ! (Perfect world scenario...I know...Go 'Cats! )

Re: UNH Wildcats Official Wait til Next Year...14/15 thread

Happy to see that Senior Asst. Captain Grayson Downing received the HE "Warrior of the Week" award (actually, he and UVM's Brendan Bradley shared it). GD has certainly had a great season and to think we almost lost him at UVM :eek: for the remainder of the season. Here's to a great QF run for him and our 'Cats!!

Here are the three goals which helped Grayson Downing earn the Hockey East Co-Player of the Week Award:

1st Goal, Game 1 vs UConn, Friday night:

2nd Goal, Game 1 vs UConn:

http://youtu.be/uL0rVPRpFtU

Goal, Game 2 vs UConn, Saturday night:

Downing now has 53 career goals at UNH, more than other notables such as Justin Aikins (27), Phil DeSimone (30), Mike Sislo (51), Matt Fornataro (44), Steve Saviano (50) and Lanny Gare (48)

Nice stats summary by Mike on UNH, but not much about the Friars, and he left out Nick Saracino's name as their leading scorer at 31 points.

Here are some other season stats from perusing the team webpages.

UNH
SOG = 1152
Goals = 113
Opp SOG = 976 (Chuck wins)
Opp Goals = 96
Saves = 880

PC
SOG = 1154
Goals = 100
Opp SOG = 959
Opp Goals = 69
Saves = 890

Hey Snively65 cool stats! One can see why PC is a good match up for us this round at least...as far as Mike putting the other together, not sure if you mean C-H-C coz I don't think he writes for UNH sports as well or are you talking about something else and I'm delirious as usual this time of day...haha! Either way going to be an exciting weekend and I'm remaining cautiously "optimistic" and happy to be where we are at this point....really no matter what the outcome, to be totally honest. Bring it on, we're game! Go 'Cats!

I think you are right, ref, C-H-C would not make that omission on his blog.

There is a lot of cool info on that UNH blurb, however, such as the list of recent UNH phenoms who did not score 50 goals in their 100+ point careers.

So, I need to decide between Schneider and the new rink on Bentley's campus for hockey tomorrow evening (whoops, I meant the JAR in Watertown, for another three years).
