So what you're saying about the third line is ... They were the best of lines, they were the worst of lines.
Sorry, killing time at a hotel in Fort Wayne.
Dickens! My ORHS education, for sure!

I lurked for many months before daring to venture in to that flame fest.I remember first hearing about USCHO from Greg when I was on the Hockey-L list serve, which apparently is now archived by someone at UMO, according to responses to a thread initiated here a few days ago. So, I have not been here very long, and did not even know that there was already another snively here, who turned out to be a fellow Durham townie. But, I do remember some of those flame wars to which you speak, especially on some of the weekly game threads of arch rivals. Now, it seems that provocateurs and trolls like Pink Pony are a dying breed.
At the time, with home ice last change, I thought Coach set that match up because they were playing well/wanted to see how they would do/give them the experience.Agree with Ref, another fine write up with video clips, Mike. I might add to your points of interest 2 and 3 that all three BU goals in the third were the Terriers' first line against the Cats' third line, so too bad that Umile could not get his first line back out there out there as he had done in the first two periods. I realize that two of those BU goals happened 14 seconds apart, so little time to respond. Anyway, great offensive performance by our third line on Saturday night.
It's a quiet day during a quiet time on the USCHO dedicated UNH thread, so let me reminisce ...
* I'm pretty sure Bobo is still out there, and checks in once in awhile. Funniest poster ever, bar none.
* Another prominent pro-UNH poster from back then has gone onto behind-the scenes political success on a national level.
* I was in my mid-30's when I found USCHO, and I'm now in my early 50's. Things change - we change - time moves on.
* Former UMaine head coach Shawn Walsh - lovingly referred to in the past by myself as the "Human Lightning Rod" - passed away over a decade ago. There used to be much *debate* over the "dark clouds" and "asterisks" attached to UMaine's '93 National Championship, which used to get the UMaine-iacs a wee bit defensive. The simple mention of the term "retroactive financial aid" would be good to get a 5 page flamefest underway at virtually ANY time of the season. UMaine ended up getting the last laugh (to date anyway) when they beat UNH in the '99 Frozen Four Finals in OT, and the UMaine-iacs finally got to push back at the lack of "asterisks" this time around;
* A UMaine poster whose name is lost in cyberspace history once accused me of thinking "Walsh is Satan". Running with that comment, I immediately founded "WIS" as the umbrella under which many nefarious raids against the Downeast Dark Prince were undertaken. It got back to me from some well-connected UMaine-iacs that Coach Walsh actually thought some (not all) of the stuff was pretty funny. He definitely did enjoy being in the limelight, for better or for worse. Hockey East hasn't been the same since his untimely passing, as "Walshy" brought the HE media focus outside of Greater Boston for the first (and arguably only) time. RIP Walshy;
* The BC v. UNH flamefests were probably just as heated as the UNH-UMaine ones, and in some ways were even better. At the time, BC was the proverbial post-season choke-a-matic team when it came to the NCAA's, and they had to put up with the taunt "1949" and references to wooden pucks ad nauseum. Of course, their retort would be to point at the virtually barren UNH trophy case, and point out that at least BC was winning HE Tourney trophies - even if it was blatantly obvious they were extremely jealous of the BU trophy case a few miles down the trolley line. We called them snobs and "Ivy wanna-bes" and they called us hicks and dopes.
* In reality, it was basically two HE programs knocking at the door to NCAA D-1 honors, and trying to get in line behind BU and *UMaine on the top tier of Hockey East at the time. BC lost in the Finals in '98 in OT, and UNH did the same in '99. It wasn't until 2001 when BC finally broke through to earn their first national title of the modern era, and then they fell back slightly for the next couple of years while UNH took their last two swings at Frozen Four glory. UNH got drubbed in the semis by UMaine in '02 (a couple of weeks after they'd beaten the Black Bears at the Garden for UNH's first of two straight HE Tourney titles), and then got back to the Finals in '03, where Minnesota finished off their back-to-back D-1's with a dominant 3rd period to break a 1-1 tie.
The BC national title juggernaut would begin shortly afterwards, changing the dynamics of the board for the forseeable future, while UMaine first, and then gradually UNH began to fade from the national discussion. When the dust settled, BC had pulled themselves up to what they'd always hoped for, which was (at least) equal billing with BU, UMaine was left with one or *two D-1 trophies in Orono but a wistful outlook that things might never return to the glory days of Coach Walsh's time in the Downeast ... and UNH has ended up as I write this as the "odd man out" in the NCAA Tourney game of "musical chairs" for the national trophy. UNH is historically locked into the Hockey East "second tier" with the likes of Providence and newcomers UMass Lowell, who both also have two HE Tourney trophies but no success on the ultimate stage. We can debate all we want about which of the three are "best among equals", but until something big happens, there will be BC and BU atop the HE pyramid, with that noisy contingent from the Downeast still able to point to trophies that no one else outside of Comm Ave. can claim in the HE universe.
But we keep coming back anyway ... enjoying the sport we all love, pulling for our respective teams to push further ahead, and enjoying the give-and-take of this unique league that (barring one notable exception) allows us fans to see as many games as we dare try to get to, all on a single tank of gas. Long may it continue.![]()
all balanced with insightful responses from chuck and bobo.
lol.
The dynamics of this place really changed from the fans posting around here, to the performance of their respective teams, to the administration of the forum. It will never be the same.

I heard one UNH fan say to another "I can't wait to get home and post 'take that Steve F." (#8 BU had upset #1 BC in their game 3.) Just shows where everyone's heads were at....
I also miss Steve F's annual milk carton thread,
However, wasn't Steve the one who had the "you can't spell playoff chokers without Ayers" tagline? Just curious how he resolves that with "Touchdown Mikey" behind the Eagles' bench.
And of course the Pat Eaves/Merrimack Goalie (blanking on his name) incident fueled this place for 6 months. Le-gen-dary.
