Re: UNH Wildcats Official Wait til Next Year...14/15 thread

Yikes, Willows -4, despite having the PPG? But, he led with 4 SOG. Speaking of which, looks like the SOG means everything crowd won tonight. But, I give the Cats and Umile a lot of credit for being in 3-3 tie very late in the second period, without Downing, against the #2 team in the country in their barn.

PPG's don't count against the +/- unfortunately for him. They scored one right after a penalty ended so if they'd scored seconds earlier that would be one less -. and also he was on the ice for the empty netter.

+/- rating for all 5 freshmen forwards vs. 3rd-ranked BU was EVEN - McNicholas, Eiserman, Foegele, Poturalski, & Salvaggio. Danny Tirone with career high 40 saves.

I do like what I saw out of the freshman last night. The more I watch them the better I feel about the next couple of years. They have really stepped it up the 2nd half of the year. I know there is a lot not to like about this year but the improvement of the freshman is not one of them. I am hoping to see McNicholas with Eiserman and Forgele tonight.

Re: UNH Wildcats Official Wait til Next Year...14/15 thread

Random thoughts after catching most of last night's game on the tube ...

* As talented as BU very clearly is, I worry about their focus and their ability to hold up defensively in the postseason. Reminded me of any number of UNH teams during the program's glory days about a decade or so ago. Outscoring your opponents in the regular season does not translate well into postseason success, when you come up against better, more defensively organized opponents. BU will get high seeds in their postseason tourneys, but I'll be surprised if they bring home any postseason hardware;

* Having said that ... UNH was fortunate not to have given up double-digits in goals to BU last night. Including shots off the iron, and gaping open goal misses alone, that would have gotten you close right there. UNH's defensemen were sitting in Tirone's lap way too often, and Tirone himself was scrambling wildly around and outside the crease a little too much for my liking. The fact that UNH was tied 3-3 until the PPG late in the second period was a minor miracle, and shows just how poorly BU played in their own end;

* Tom Caron (NESN announcer) remains the quintessential pro-Boston ballwasher in the college hockey media. Whether it's been BC in the past, or currently BU, our boy with the prodigious forehead sure does fawn over the best and brightest of the talent on Comm Ave., while showing some poor game prep when stumbling over really basic things like pronouncing UNH players' names correctly (McNicholas became "McNichols", and Poturalski was "Potularski" until ol' TC read the graphics when Pots went to the sin bin). Throw in the chronic fascination with numbers and his audible excitement with some "amazing stats", and it honestly makes one yearn for the good old days when Sean "The Shill" Grande was doing the same things on HE broadcasts, except he at least got all of the names right;

* This was my first extended chance to watch Jack Eichel in action. I can't believe I'm going to actually put this in writing, but there is one player that Eichel reminds me of, and it's totally spooky. Gordie Howe. Yes, the old man. And it's WAY more than the similarity of the BU uniform color scheme to the classic DRW look (and the #9) ... the physical mannerisms and skating style, quiet lower body and total control of the puck, gliding past defenders, always finding the open space in the attacking zone, all remarkably similar. The goal he scored in the second period was (at least in my mind) classic Howe, with the economy of movement, immediately seeing the opening on the give and go, and the simple textbook finish. I didn't see the elbows and the huge Neely-like physical presence that was Howe in his prime, but I'm completely bullish on this kid's future. And I'll admit my reaction is visceral rather than logical. But I'm sold. :)

* I'll be shocked if UNH can get anything out of this afternoon's game. And assuming that's the case, the chance of home ice in the play-in round is pretty much gone, short of running the table over the last two weekends of the RS (and there's nothing I've seen to say that's in the cards). I'm guessing they might move up to 10th in the end, but there's still the scary possibility of 12th too.

I'm really hoping they give Clark a chance to play today. Hoping for the best, but expecting another decisive "L". Prove me wrong, 'Cats.

Tom Caron annoys the heck out of me. A) He talks way too much B) Thinks he knows hockey cuz his kid plays maybe Pee Wees at this point C) He's a jock sniffin' wannabe. Patrick Foley was very good and made Caron look like a fool a couple of times without even trying! Bring back Newmie and I'd be happy!

UNH really looked like a D-3 team against BU last night. BU put the pressure on at will it seemed like and poured on the dreaded SOG! Having said all that UNH will probably take it to BU tonight just because!!

Re: UNH Wildcats Official Wait til Next Year...14/15 thread

Chuck, totally agree about TC...definite Boston hockey shill. Meanwhile, we very much enjoyed Pat Foley's introspective commentary. is he gunning for Brick's spot behind the NESN desk? ;)

Hey Chuck (and others) pretty good / fair game analysis. Very, very glad I went to see it live rather than having to listen to TC...argh. I would have to say that you are probably correct; we were fortunate the score wasn't higher but being there, sitting right at the goal cage, was interesting. UNH had their chances, as well, to put some of those pucks that were left in front. When we got our "legs" out there (the bus was late or something like that???) we were very competitive and to tie it up made the trip worthwhile. DT made some great saves as he was on his own as you said many, many times. Boyd lucked out that he wasn't in the box half the night from my observations! He's a hard worker...hats off for working his tail off all night. BU is just so deep; they skate soooo well and it was great to watch a player like Eichel out there. Had to be an experience for our Frosh out there; they held their own and oh it's going to be great if they can develop over the next couple. And of course being at the "palace" was fun and worth the trip. My fav arena away from home!

Re: UNH Wildcats Official Wait til Next Year...14/15 thread

Caron's finest moment came when BU scored the ENG in the waning moments of the third period. The horn is blowing, goal light is illuminated AND the ref is behind the net pointing at the puck. Basically, everyone realizes BU has scored except "TC" who's completely lost. I had to laugh at his bloviating "the horn is going off, the red light is on, but there's no signal from the ref"...ummm, what? He's a NESN hack, but he could atleast figure the names out before going on air...I also thought #25 did a nice job doing the color work as well.

The way the season has gone for the Cats, ordinarily I'd pick them to win today and take a split, but I still think they're overmatched so I'll go with the BU sweep. I hope I'm wrong....

Re: UNH Wildcats Official Wait til Next Year...14/15 thread

The effort and competitiveness were there last night. OK, not so much from the start. Give BU credit for coming out on fire against a much weaker opponent. Yes we had "bus legs" (seriously did the team have no idea about the snow impact in Boston or maybe players were finishing classes?), but the Terriers were all over us. Men against boys for the first part of the game. Once their adrenaline waned and our 2nd and 3rd lines adjusted to BU's speed and skill, figuring out they could actually play with the Terriers, we were OK. Unfortunately with BU defensive zone mistakes often find the back of the net. We made a lot of mistakes against a far superior team, but I'll take that over a lethargic effort any (hopefully to) day.

Playing so many underclassmen in lieu of Seniors tells us where the coaching staff sees this team: with one skate in 2015 - '16. Tirone made some spectacular saves, others not so much. Overall, considering the D, he gets a passing grade and although I agree with Chuck about Clark, probably another start. Maller is definitely missed.

BU's weakest link is goaltending. They are improving towards a consistent 60 minute effort and with their skill I have to disagree with Chuck about post season hardware. They have to be the HEA tournament favorite and although they won't hang a banner unless they win it all they are also a FF favorite.

I am not a TC hockey play by play broadcaster fan, but in in fairness he panders to the more populous market and mispronounces names on an equal opportunity basis. Foley was GREAT! So much better than when in studio. His understated tone and insights were superior to other NESN hockey analysts, demonstrating why he is considered a good coach.

We've seen them, know we can play with them and if we play a near perfect game and BU is off, we could beat them. Unfortunately from the BU thread: We win tomorrow and BC and ND do not win (ties OK), we win RS title outright. The Terriers will be motivated.

Eichel, right? The talent surrounding him allows him to show how good he is.

I went to the JAR instead of Agganis last night, as it was free admission, free parking, much easier travel, and frankly Bentley is playing more entertaining hockey than UNH this season.

That said, I am heading to Durham for the game this afternoon, if nothing more than to watch the second coming of Gordie Howe; loved your description of Jack Eichel, Chuck. I heard Bobby Orr interviewed on the radio this week for a charity event that he is sponsoring in Florida, and he ranks GH at the top all time. Hey, the guy played at least one pro game in each of six decades.

Hey Snively65 would love to catch up and say 'hey'. If you want maybe meet up in front of the team pic (the big one where they are all hanging out informally ) between 1st and 2nd? I'll have my UNH blues on, of course ;) as it's 'blue out the 'whitt'. Go 'Cats!

Sounds like a plan; I am trying convince longtime friend off I-93 to drive over with me. Perhaps we will go to Libby's for a ore-game rally.

I only own White, so I will be contrarian, as my Blue was too large, so gave to my brother to wear at DU games in Colorado.

Not sure they'll let you in the place if all you have is white :D:p . Libby's eh? Maybe my daughter and I will change our plans we were heading to the 'thristy moose' in Dover as they are giving 10%off if you are in UNH gear! Hope to see you either way!

Having spent time at the JAR many, many moons ago when I was a student, I was going to question your sanity ... until you piled on the logic at the end. Sounds like you made a very wise decision. :)

Bobby Orr is my all-time #1, and knowing Howe is his #1 (he says the same in his recent book) then that's high praise indeed. Can't say I ever saw Gordie in his prime - I did catch him in action a few times at the end of his time with DRW, and then in the WHA/NHL with the Whalers - but the similarity in mannerisms and playing style was striking. With the colors and the big #9 I'm guessing I'm not the only one to have noticed this. It would be great to see someone ask the kid if it's a coincidence.

I'm not one to fawn over the latest version of the "next great player" - most have come up short of the mark (see Lindros, Eric) - but Eichel really did blow me away on multiple levels. If he can keep his head on straight, gets himself in the right situation at the next level, and continues to develop, he *could* become an all-time great. But if nothing else ... someday if Hollywood ever gets around to making a movie about the great Gordie Howe, I think they've found their "stunt double" to handle the on-ice parts.

Running behind, so just completing my solo tailgater in the parking lot and heading to the ticket window. I do not want to miss PRAAAAC-TICE (er, warm ups) with Gordie Eichel.

Edit: Kittery Trading Post giving away dark blue UNH t-shirts on my arrival; yes, watching Gordie Eichel cruise around a delight.

Well, that is nice, Chuck's Stevie Yzerman got the first goal of the game, in a little over 2 minutes.

Re: UNH Wildcats Official Wait til Next Year...14/15 thread

So, did Jay Camper have something to prove tonight? Perhaps Umile had his D-men read this thread for breakfast, which seemed to work for the first two periods. Good catching up, ref.

Re: UNH Wildcats Official Wait til Next Year...14/15 thread

Like I said; UNH would take it to BU tonight! Sux to BU😀
