UNH Wildcats 2021/2022 - Return of the Champions of October?

For me the consideration of releasing my season tickets is not completely centered around the on ice product. While that is a decent part of the consideration, the big thing has been the lack of any real value in holding them outside of the reduced price per game. It used to be I could get comped tickets to any of the womens games which I would use several times a year especially when both teams were playing the same day, that's gone. This year we were told there would be four tickets given to a game TBD, never happened. Every year we get the promise of "Special access via season ticket holder only events". In seven years I have not seen a notification or invite to a single one. Every year our tickets arrive later and later, in earlier seasons we would be told why there was a delay (whether the truth or not at least it was communication) this year we were told nothing. When I called the ticket rep it took 4 days for him to call me back a week before the season started, you know, that time when season ticket holders may have questions.

Next up, the in arena non playing stuff. This year, a big issue has been the rotation of in arena announcers they have tried out. There was one that we were using mid season who was pretty good but the rest were missing cues and not good at calling the games at all. I don't need a guy calling a game like a monster truck rally but give me a bit of energy and for gods sake the right information. The beginning of the season was understandable as the announcer was not in the scorers box (covid related I'm sure) but it never got any better. The fact that they are running the screen from across the street means they miss cues and screw up graphics and such all the time as well. It's often just a poorly put together production and sometimes would be better if they just left the game camera on with nothing else.

Then there were things like picture frames on the visitors bench side with pieces sitting on the floor for weeks then duct taped up afterwards. There have been no team pictures added to the wall since the 2017-2018 season, players individual photos are up but no team picture in 5 seasons. All small things but they just point to a program and athletics department that doesn't care, unfortunately that attitude is seeping into myself and several others. "If they don't care about improving the team and optics of UNH Hockey, why should I" is a sentiment I have heard too many times by too many long time fans this year.

This is Martys legacy with the Men's Hockey Program, you "didn't get it back to where it should be" because you were too busy hiring your buddies and looking the other way as the ship sank. But I'm glad you got your little puff piece video of everyone telling you how great you are and all the smiles you got last weekend as Scott Borek got the last laugh on your special night. Yup, I'm angry, and if the next AD hire is Steve Metcalf or another in the UNH buddy system you can find someone else to give you the $614 I would have. Oh wait, it will be $686 after your cutesy little price increase, good luck on making that sale.

Signed,
Francis Dube
Seats 119 J1 and J2 (Possibly former holder of those seats)

Just going to say this regarding DB62's comments about the team pics not being up...and BTW I hope you'll consider sending that to President Dean as well as Marty...You all know who made sure those pics were up? FOH....You know who maintained the history wall? FOH.. just sayin' fwiw dept...

So to echo your thoughts even in the what 9 seasons we have been with the team ourselves I can say the vibe has really changed. I try to be fair and recognize the lost season due to covid (we still bought the pic for the seat and watched every game) . When the outgoing AD says he takes responsibility for the Fall of the program from the "hockey royalty" status (his words) I want to know just where or what he feels he could have or should have done?

As a former teacher lets take a quiz:

A. Was it that he let the Whitt ice issues go on too long?

B.Was it he built up other programs and built a nice (and hey its all good) stadium across the street?

C. Was it he turned a blind eye as other schools developed great programs all around him and he ignored the downward trend of ours??

D. B and C

I think we know the answer but we will never get it out of him. Like DB62 and all of the rest of us we want to support the players and this isn't on them. I have said they deserve better and I still say they do.

Thanks for the honest post and I hope you will send that along.. Maybe lightening strikes on Wednesday and the Hockey Gods feel generous....but am not betting the ranch on it.

Hockeyref, the answer is not on that quiz.

When you are a facilities funder (see below), every problem looks like a facilities issue.

Hockey program slipping? Buy another video board. Complain that the aging facilities are an insurmountable problem that need fixing.

Meanwhile, you leave the most important consideration in a program's success -- who will run it -- to a myopic Dickie Umile who showed no real interest in the broader college world of recruiting. But Dick and you are buddies, with that famous "godfather" story you like to tell, which is more than telling about the intellect behind Dick's decision making. That choice ("hey, who do I know from the neighborhood?") was met with an immediate "this is a gamble that is likely to fail, I can't believe Marty would be so stupid." (fn2) Seven years later, as it has utterly and predictably failed, you head out the door by the same moto: I am fixing it by doing an arena repair/change.

Let's not overthink this. Sometimes when a person makes a "mind boggling" stupid decision that "just doesn't make any sense" and it doesn't work out, the answer is easy.

Thankfully a new AD will see that a cheaper fix is at hand. You don't need to buy facilities, you buy talent. Sure, you can't lard up the top line of your resume with "secured over $75 million in facilities upgrades," you only get to say "flagship program went from 9th place to 4th place"

** See Marty Scarano UNH web page.
Marty Scarano is in his 22nd season as the director of athletics at the University of New Hampshire in 2021-22. During his tenure, Scarano has heightened national exposure for UNH athletics with academic achievements, facility renovations and programmatic advancement being top priorities.

There has been nearly $53 million in capital improvements since Scarano’s hiring in the summer of 2000. The largest-scale renovation – Wildcat Stadium, a $27 million athletic complex that is home to multiple UNH teams and multi-purposed for other events – was completed in August 2016. The structure, built on the west side of Mooradian Field, offers increased and improved seating, state-of-the-art broadcast capability, concessions and restrooms, as well as a 30’ by 50’ video board. A new synthetic surface was installed in summer 2017.

In July 2017, the University announced the approval of a new $3.7 million soccer and lacrosse facility to be used by UNH athletic teams and the Oyster River Youth Association on the site of the former Lewis Field. Phase I of the project was completed and the stadium opened for use in Summer 2019. Phase I included infrastructure preparation as well as installation of a state-of-the-art synthetic field, goals, perimeter fencing around the field and team benches. The second phase of construction will include field lighting, a 3,000-seat grandstand and storage area, press box with production capabilities, covered team benches and enhanced landscaping. An additional $1.7 million of the total $3.5 million needs to be raised for the second phase of construction.

In the spring of 2015, UNH finished construction on the $2 million Watkins Center for Student-Athlete Excellence at the Field House for its Division I and Northeast Passage student-athletes, funded entirely by private donations. That fall, the Whittemore Center – home to both ice hockey teams and site of the 2016 Women’s Frozen Four – received a substantial facelift ($1.3 million) in the form of a four-sided, center-hung video board, a high-resolution end zone board and LED display band.

fn2 From Greg Ambrose June 10, 2015.
I can't believe that this is true, that when the hiring of Souza is announced, it will also be announced that Umile will be retiring the year after next, to be replaced with someone with a record that is as thin as Souza's is. Mind you, I think Mike is a great guy, at least he was in all the interactions I had with him back when he was a player. And I do think he is an earnest, hard working, up-and-comer. But to think that he would be anointed the new coach would be mind boggling to me. It would lead me to ask Marty Scarano, what happened to the notion that you would only hire someone with Division 1 head coach experience? If Umile was going to designate someone as his successor, why wouldn't it be the man who has been his chief recruiter for the last 12 years rather than someone who is just establishing himself. Just doesn't make any sense.
Getting your foot in the door and being anointed the successor are, to me, two different things. As I said before, Umile announcing his retirement and naming as his successor an assistant at three different D1 schools, none of which have had any level of success, would fly in the face of what I always thought would be a search focused on head coaches with D1 coaching experience. Again, it would be mind boggling.

Well I gave it my best shot lol. So would love to see that quiz re-written! Your point about a new AD "getting it"...welp all depends on who that new AD is...That will be huge.....Agree that the main "concern" with current powers that be is facilities...if only we had fill in the blank we'd be successful...

Like I said in another post with my Gone With the Wind analogy...you can put the finest harness on a mule...its still a mule...(Mammy to Rhett and Scarlett when they built their McMansion on Peachtree Street)

The new AD will be crucial. Unfortunately, a lot of the obvious candidates were scooped up last offseason (Barr, Keefe, Mayotte), so he or she will have to dig a bit more. That is why I don't necessarily want the new AD to make a quick decision in May/June. Yes, the odds are you won't make as bad a mistake, but you also will have better options/more knowledge next year.

I quoted Greg A from 2015, but the post that prompted the whole change was (I think from Bomberhockey) "Be careful what you wish for." How prescient. Getting a change is only half of the issue. Committing to the right one going forward is the other half. Let's not rush it.

Groundhog Day

Shambles. What a complete and utter shambles.

If there is a shot at Eric Lang (AIC) the new AD needs to make it happen ASAP.

Joe Dumais (assistant at Quinnipiac) might be another option. Both are alums at their current jobs.

Too bad we can't have this Italian American involved in the upcoming hiring processes at UNH ...

Lol had to watch this directly on You Tube. Thing is...haven't we had enough Italian influence where UNH hockey decision making is concerned (and I'm Italian)...

Lombardi was (is) the real thing, 'Ref. There's no comparison to what he pushed himself to accomplish, and what BS+, MS7 and Umile managed to accomplish, combined. Umile is the only one who even really tried, and at some point after 2003, he pretty much broke down, lost his self-belief, and started to mail it in. Lombardi never lost the fighting spirit until the moment he literally expired.

Well yeah I get it. Just poking the bear haha

I'm afraid the next person to occupy to occupy the corner office in the Field House will probably be the antithesis of Vince Lombardi in many ways. (Which is why I say be careful what you wish for.)

The phrase When Pride Still Mattered could describe the UNH hockey program circa two decades ago.

Well yeah I get it. Just poking the bear haha

Ironically, the only things Lombardi missed on were (1) failing to listen to doctors earlier - despite his admonition in the linked video; and (2) displaying a misplaced streak of loyalty in hiring his own HC replacement, who had been a long-time assistant, and in no way shared the same dynamic personality as VTL. He was his own harshest critic, and did tend to learn from mistakes, but unfortunately his biggest mistake (1, above) was one that proved fatally irreversible.

He and my granddad are atop the list of people who've passed who I'd love to spend an hour with.

I understand your frustrations and contemplating giving up season tickets but you don't know how lucky you are. I would give up my OU Sooner football tickets in a heartbeat for any HE school season hockey tickets. I was fortunate enough to be stationed at Ft Devens for 3 seasons(2016-18) of hockey. Love the game! We picked UML to follow and had season tickets(I had known about Norm Bazin at Colorado College when we were stationed in Colorado), we were in hockey heaven,,,,now we are in a hockey desert in Oklahoma.

Lots of great points being made. Delta Bravo your remarks concerning the communication is so spot on! Like everything, they have let everything slide. I’m honestly surprised that they still throw the fish. Although that is now orchestrated by the facilities folks.
I can’t imagine that a new AD will see replacing the hockey coach as the number one priority. I have not received a thing about the potential rink modification yet they say it will start immediately following the season. My seat will see an incredible site line modification, why would I want to renew without knowing my options.

That is a really good point ATW...and perhaps you and others who wonder/worry about this should inquire. Obviously, they have the 'plan' and know what it's going to look like. I think it's a very fair question that should be answered. Maybe I don't remember but thinking it was early to be asking for renewals?? Anyway, please let us know if you do ask about this and what kind of answer you get. I'm doubting the ticket people handling the orders would have an answer, but the AD certainly does and should be forthright regarding it....right?

FYI Ref, I did ask the students at the table last night. They had not thought of that nor been advised. No harm no foul. I’ll give it a week or so and try going up the latter. Film at 11:00!
