UNH Wildcats 2018-2019: Souza the Opportunity or Louza the Opportunity

O ye of little faith. :D 3 points from 2 games with UConn was probably to be expected, but all it's gonna take to get to the 9 points out of 6 games is either two more 3 point weekends like that, OR a sweep and a split weekend. Considering that UNH is the in-form team of the group - yes, UVM swept last weekend, but that was against the 'Mack, and they're not too far ahead of last place, while UMaine had a good showing against UMass at home, but are the road team next weekend - I think it's equally likely they'll earn 7 points as it is that they'll earn 5 points. So six points sounds pretty good to me. :)

Realistically, at this point, I think UNH is merely playing for HE quarterfinal playoff positioning, but they seem to be reveling in this newfound winning stuff, so these relatively meaningless games take on more meaning for them than it does for the likes of Lowell and Northeastern. Both of those teams give UNH a chance to get a head start on playoffs-style hockey, but they might not be as focused as UNH. Northeastern, for one, will be a couple of weeks post-Beanpot when they come up here for a pair. Lowell, right now, is the only team close to UNH in terms of current form, but they're hitting a tough stretch of games shortly, and who knows if these games will have meaning by the time they arrive in about a month. If they don't - I say, advantage UNH.

If I'm Snively65 right now, I'm really liking my chances at the 14 win projection. A lot.

And who among us thought this would even be close to the case two months ago ...

Agreed with all of the above - these next two weekends simply look a little more competitive than we might have thought two weekends ago. And you’re right, if we keep our trajectory, the NU and UML series could be pretty interesting. It’s not exactly the BC/BU/ME murderer’s row of the early 2000’s!

So, at least three of us wearing rose-colored glasses at the beginning of the season. :-)
Yup-:)

BTW , my original math error resulting in a 4-4-1 may very well prove to be correct but the rose colored glasses got me to the 5-3-1!

Go figure;)

Agree about UVM. Having lived in Burlington for 15 years and getting to know many former UVM players from their glory days in DII including an NC, they hate to lose to UNH. But lose they have and often to UNH adding extra incentive. They will bring it and the home atmosphere will help them. A sweep up there is not in the cards.

UNH's only chance for a sweep in the upcoming games is with Maine although I agree it's not a given.

Hoping for some upside surprises with likes of Northeastern and UML!

UVM? We have almost the same track record as with UConn, in the past 3, 4 seasons...I've been to Burlington the past 4 and have only seen them win up there once? The rest have been losses, but I'd have to check; same in Durham...beating them earlier in the season in that OT was awesome and it won't be the same there. They have a great atmosphere with their student sections and the 'Gut is always filled to capacity. I think we all know where we are at but like I say...anything can happen in college hockey and I'd love to see some 'surprises'. At best, we are hopeful and that's a good start...Go 'Cats!!

I like your 5-3-1 better, as that gets us a free beer at Libby's without having to worry about getting wins in the post-season; thanks, Chuck. :-)

Yup. Great atmosphere up there in dirty hippie country;)

i believe that i was in on this too. i have felt this was a fun team from day one. Note, didn't say great! Just felt this was a special freshmen class. The entire team is just so hard working from top to bottom. My current fear is they may only have 4 Ws left before the playoffs. But they could also have 5/6 just as easily. We are all justifiably high on the game Saturday night. But that was not a good first period and fortunately Robbie was on. We will need the entire 60 in the games ahead and as HR notes, UVM in B-Town is a tough place for our cats. Lovin our work around the net it has been missing for a long time.

It's always interesting to see the different reference points we all go to with our various fan experiences. Using HR's example, if you're a relative newbie, then you see some of these opponents or road destinations as nothing but doom, whereas for others it's just a curious aberration that UNH has struggled in some of these places in recent years, 'cuz (let's face it) they've not had the strongest of teams. It's kinda like the UMaine fans who are still celebrating the fact that Danny Tirone won't be in goal this weekend, and they "eked" a point out of a home game earlier this month in their first post-Tirone game. Whereas many of us go back to the times when getting anything out of Alfond was almost unthinkable. Times change, things change, we move on.

Totally random note, but Effingwoods' first family experienced an MS7 sighting last night in Portsmouth.

Do they still chant FU New Hampshire in the student section?

Sat very close to the student section last 2 seasons; don't recall that....going up for one (maybe 2) week after this so I'll pay closer attention! ;)

Well I don't see UVM as "doom" but, it's always interesting up there!! Checking the UNH v UVM stats since I've been following just fer fun looked it up:

13-14: 2 losses (the board freaked over these two if I remember...)
14-15: Split (UVM made the HE Semi's that year, losing to UML 4-1/we lost to BU by the same score in the next game)
15-16: 2 losses/ Tie (UVM was 15-22-3 that season...)
Check out this YouTube of the OT loss as Pots takes it to the net that season...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RHyI24f-QQ0

16-17: Split
17-18: 2 Ties (one on DU's big send-off, bobble head night) 1 L

So my 'record' of UNH v UVM is: 2-7-3  (but, I digress!) Guess it's all relative so that's why I esp. loved beating UConn (finally), BC (yesssss) and, UVM is next on that short list to pick up some W's. Oh, and anytime we beat UML ? ...it's amazing. :D

I like the way you put that and yes, I'm still in the glow about it. When the 'Cats are clicking, and it stems out from Mike Robinson, it's great to see. The team IS fun...everyone around me in my new section that has watched for years are saying the same. They don't give up and that is refreshing. We've got a Freshman who's mantra is "I live to score goals" how cool is that? Just the way ALL the freshmen have responded has been fantastic. Obviously a lot of great work ethic there. Woot!
