UNH Wildcats 2018-2019: Souza the Opportunity or Louza the Opportunity

NU was 5-for-10 on their PP, this weekend, and UNH was 0-for-7 with a SHG against...

Can’t even remember when we’ve scored on a PP...Seems like eons ago?
Before the wheels came off the bus tonight thought we played fairly well.

Re: UNH Wildcats 2018-2019: Souza the Opportunity or Louza the Opportunity

So … it was so bad, there was no running commentary on here tonight?

After UNH took a 3-1 lead midway into last night's game, they were outscored 10-0, plus one ENG.

Reality check.

Regardless of the competition I can’t understand what’s happened...at a loss really.

Re: UNH Wildcats 2018-2019: Souza the Opportunity or Louza the Opportunity

Reality check is right. So boys and girls, how are we likin' our team NOW??

Tonight, aka Schitshow #2 just shows how NOT ready this team is with the playoff's looming in just a couple of weeks. Reality check? This team is not going to win a game the rest of the season.

Maybe Marty can negotiate a sweet deal with Vermont and "sell" them our playoff spot instead, since they appear to be the more deserving of post-season play.

Schitty year for football.
Schitty year for basketball.
Schitty year for hockey.

I can understand what happened this weekend. I do not blame the players one bit. I blame the coaches. UNH was not out coached this weekend! The UNH coaches outsmarted themselves!!! I have been there myself!!!!! I hope that Souza and the rest of the coaching staff learn from this weekend and become better coaches from it. Before this weekend I thought the coaches were doing a good job this season, especially compared to last season.

HockeyRef,

Thanks for responding to my post. I do not want to be too negative. Hockey is a good sport. UNH is a good school. I would like to see UNH become a good hockey program.

Sorry I deleted my post....it’s ok to be frustrated. I think I’m trying to figure out what’s up. Hard to believe only one home game left. Let’s hang in there. Things ARE better...

Re: UNH Wildcats 2018-2019: Souza the Opportunity or Louza the Opportunity

Here is my constructive criticism: All players have strengths and weaknesses. A coaching staff need to accurately access their players. With this information come up with a system of play that best utilizes the strengths of their players while hiding their weaknesses. Every player should be given a role that they embrace and that will help the team win games. For example, a power play can not have five shooters, five players that think they are the goal scorers. The power play needs to be made up of passers, shooters, screeners, deflectors, players that can pounce on rebounds, puck retrievers and even players that can win face-offs.

I did not see Friday game, when apparently UNH fell apart after about 30 minutes. I did attend Saturday game (no will call ticket, 1932?), when I thought we played well for two full periods before imploding, with the exception of Wyse stuffing the puck past Taylor (slick move, Wyse). So, we did score a goal. No more SMT's for this team kinda sums up the third period. I was surprised that Gildon was only -2 on the score sheet, as I thought that he was -4. Good to see Lazaro get some time in net to wrap things up, and congrats to him for highest GPA on the team.

This is the "not too low" part in the "not too high, not too low!"

Re: UNH Wildcats 2018-2019: Souza the Opportunity or Louza the Opportunity

It's too early to write the post-mortem on this season just yet, but even the harshest of critics have to concede this season was at least a small step in the right direction … and it could be an even bigger step in the right direction if they can flush this past weekend and add some W's down the stretch, and give a good accounting of themselves in the HE tourney QF's. Programs rarely go from the outhouse to the penthouse overnight, and that's not going to happen here. Shocker (not).

Northeastern looks like a legitimate top level contender, and they're doing what legit contenders do at this time of the season, which is building momentum on their strengths in advance of some really important, win-or-go-home games that they have every right to expect to win. UNH looks like a pretender that hopes to win against the real contenders. Big difference.

UNH made the real playoffs this year, and that's a good baseline change. Now it's up to Souza, Stu and Crew to take it on board, up their games (recruiting and instructionally), and push on further next season.

Replay clearly showed that it took a freak bounce off Wyse and was headed into the net. He simply was trying to pull it back. Can’t put that one on him.

Had that been the worst of it.... alas, there was the 3rd.

Re: UNH Wildcats 2018-2019: Souza the Opportunity or Louza the Opportunity

I guess I need to back off a bit from last night's comments....clearly I was still infuriated at that point. :o

Ray, you are absolutely correct...it was a schitty WEEKEND of hockey. Friday night's game to me was an aberration, and I thought that the Cats would make the necessary adjustments for Saturday night's game. For a while, I thought that they did, until the third period. I don't understand how one team can fall apart so quickly against another team....is it coaching? Is it conditioning? Is it both??

I still do not have a good feeling about the remaining three games and how they are going to limp their way down to Amherst for the playoffs. But as Chuck said --- it is a good baseline change this year. Let's hope the momentum carries for next year.

Not trying to troll your thread but I know how you feel since my loyalties lie with Northeastern, which brought up the rear of the HEA/ECAC standings for much of its existence and all too often was on the outside looking in when playoff time came around. A couple of takes on where UNH stands, if I may:

1) You have a new coach who may or may not be the guy to lead you back to the promised land. In our case, Jimmy Madigan was a surprise pick to replace Greg Cronin eight years back and his first three or so years were so unremarkable that the vultures were circling over Huntington Ave. Things started to turn in Year Five and the rest is still-unfolding history. Moral of the story: You need to give the new guy three to five years to establish himself, bring in his kind of players who can execute his kind of system, and then fine tune the program. It's a long and painful slog.

2) The recruiting landscape has changed. Until recent years, UNH was always the preferred landing spot for top-level players who, for whatever reason, couldn't take up residence on Commonwealth Ave. While the two Comm. Ave. schools may or may not have lost some of their luster, the rise of NU, UMass, PC, and possibly UML means the high-enders have more prime places to land. The new guy's ability to recruit in a much more competitive environment is going to be at least as important as what he does with Xs and Os.

It's a brave new world out there and Mr. Souza is going to need some time to find his way in it.

The problem with this, he’s been an assistant with UNH for three years, most of the kids are already his recruits. He’s already been bringing in “his kind of players”. The window in this case is most likely, or at least should be, much less than 5 years.

One bad weekend certainly shouldn’t be the only measuring stick on a season but, it was certainly a slap in the face and puts a spotlight on where this team truly stands.

Re: UNH Wildcats 2018-2019: Souza the Opportunity or Louza the Opportunity

Yes, Madigan was hired at NU without the benefit of being the three-year "heir apparent" to the head coaching position. Souza's players are pretty much in place at this time.

They have made big improvements this year...this weekend just proves that there is A LOT more work that needs to get done.

Re: UNH Wildcats 2018-2019: Souza the Opportunity or Louza the Opportunity

This week will need to be the coaching staff's best so far this season. The team can not be in a good spot mentally right now. The coaches will need to be psychologists to get the team back to believing in themselves. The team has fought back late in games many times this season. Lets hope they can get it together and have a good ending to the season.

I've a feeling they will dust themselves off and move on. It's up to them (players) to find it on the ice. Last year when Norm Bazin was asked about what was going on when his team was struggling his answer was 'the answer is in that locker room' or something to that effect. Anyway...having coached and been around athletics my entire life I know/believe this is the bottom line; if it doesn't come from the players you (the coach) can be the greatest of motivators but, ultimately? It's down to them. Do they execute the game plan or not? Can they execute the game plan, or not? (Worse case scenario...do they WANT to execute the game plan ?) I'm sure the coaches will have the discussion, talk about what didn't work, what worked, and it's onto UML. I'm seeing the 'Cats as the team they are and will take any positives that come. And there have been a lot of positives! It's still been a great season and...it ain't over yet!!! Go 'Cats!!!

Re: UNH Wildcats 2018-2019: Souza the Opportunity or Louza the Opportunity

Snively

I was at will call at 615 (I pick up kids and senior citizens and cannot get to games until 6 PM) and they said you already came in and they honored your will call request. I left you two tickets for Saturday night game at 615.
