UNH Wildcats 2015-2016 (Part Two) - Managing Decreasing Expectations

Re: UNH Wildcats 2015-2016 (Part Two) - Managing Decreasing Expectations

That was our eldest daughter's first (and obviously only) game at Snively - she was barely 4 years old, and fast asleep after regulation. I believe that game featured Pat Norton's first (and perhaps only?) UNH goal, on a deflection off his ... err, posterior. :o

I never realized that Bogey's dad was the guy caught on video celebrating behind the goal. That had to be in the old empty space behind the goal at the far end of the arena (closest to what is now the lobby area).

We were seated between the face-off dots and the goal at that end of the rink, about halfway up on the side furthest away from Main St. So we were right there to see it. I don't think the noise even woke our kid up.

The tape of that goal I *think* featured prominently in the old Channel 11 TV pre-game intro sequence for some years. IIRC after Bogey scored, he danced a little, and went into the boards to celebrate ... and I never realized until today it was probably because his dad was right there on the other side of the boards! :) Game was probably on NESN too? Great goal to celebrate a memorable (if not bittersweet) occasion. The Whitt was a great development for the program, the school AND the region ... but Snively was a great venue, still miss it lots.

Admit it Chuck....the best part for you was that it came against BC.....(one of the rare UNH victories over them in the post season...)

Great stuff reminiscing about these games, as it eases some of the current pain.

What year was that? Was it the last win UNH had over BC in the postseason? I feel like someone said in 1997 (senior year in HS) they may have taken it to BC in the HE tourney. BC's on quite a streak dating back to at least 1998 to current.

Someone on this forum said to me "you picked an interesting time to start following UNH hockey" but even despite the current conditions I do have some positives in the past few years that are somewhat gratifying, like, making it to the Garden when no one ever thought we would. Not a big deal and it's not FF material but hey it's what we have right now.

Those days are going to return! Don't know when, but am confident UNH hockey will see a turn around. No one ever thought the Red Sox would win a World Series either. Maybe not the best analogy in the world I know. At this point, I'm hoping for a spot in the Regionals as a start...that could be a couple of years down the road or even, dare I dream, next year in Manchester? You may say....I'm a dreamer...but I'm not the only one..ha!

Yeah, the last postseason UNH win over BC was in the HE Semis back in '97. The Boguniecki goal was in Game 2 of the '94 HE quarters (double OT?) at Snively, which UNH swept 2-0. I think it was also Steve "Count" Cedorchuck's last game in charge behind the BC bench. He'd finished up a 7th place HE finish the previous season with a 6th place HE finish in '94. God, I hated to see that guy go ... :o

The good old days when there were only nine HEA teams. Sigh.

Re: UNH Wildcats 2015-2016 (Part Two) - Managing Decreasing Expectations

So I should be ultra confident in PC sweeping this weekend since most of this thread is remembering the last game at Snively (Someone PLEASE upload that to You Tube. I saw a brief glimpse of that game a few years ago and it looked UNH had a home game at Merrimack).
But after watching PC sleepwalk through the third period at Lowell, the Kitties might steal a point of two. PC shouldn't take for granted the team that almost ended their NC hopes, but this has been a wacky season.

The 'Cats are hungry for a win that is for sure and looking past them might be disastrous. That being said you know the drill with our goal tending and D concerns and our PP has been less than effective the past 4 games. I'm going down fully expecting a sweep (for PC) but we might just sneak out with a point..open for anything! I still say PC has a short memory of the 'Cats stealing some games the past couple of years and I'd think they wanna clean that up. ;) It's been kind of fun having their 'number' so to speak but that's ancient history 'specially after they won the NC I mean..who cares about a HE championship? (we would)

Looking forward to our trip to PC and at this point, just kind of rolling with whatever. Hoping TyK adds a few points to his Century Club coffers while he's at it.

Big q of the day, who starts in goal for the 'Cats?

On the other side of the coin, Leaman has to start Hawkey at some point. I wouldn't pin the losses so far on Ellis (the BC loss was atrocious and you never want to lose to Brown, but the team let him down at Lowell and he gave up one two goals to Cornell) but you should probably spell him at a point.

Interesting that you should mention the power play: PC went on quite roll with the PK up until the game at Conte, but the one thing that worked really well at Lowell was the penalty kill. PC doesn't goon it up as much as they did in the Poolley years.

Yup, that's probably it, Jon. Same empty space behind the goal, which I believe MC has since filled in.

HR asked the million dollar question, so I'll answer. I'll be shocked if Tirone doesn't start tomorrow's game.

As far as the 'Cats looking "hungry" ... I'm not sure I saw that. It would make for a nice change, though.

Well that's what they said on Channel 9 haha. OK, I'm hungry for a win. :) And I said they are hungry...big dif. ;) At least... they should be. And I'm with you on the gk...I'd be surprised if Regan gets the nod...but I think he (DU) will / would put him in pretty quick if things get squirlley. (north country term)

As they say, actions speak louder than words ... and yeah, they should be starving for a win right now.

I agree. Regan may not have won, but he certainly didn't embarrass himself last weekend.

Re: UNH Wildcats 2015-2016 (Part Two) - Managing Decreasing Expectations

:)

Just to keep score in the wake of the clever linguistics on display in the last two posts:

Chuck: Tirone starts tonight
Darius: Regan starts tonight
Snively: Tirone starts tonight

 I think so , anyway

Doesn't matter - PC will sweep the weekend series, UNH will drop a close one and a 3+ goal margin.

It won't be good news if Tirone is on the wrong end of the heavy loss ...

Maybe Tirone loses lopsided contest tonight, Regan loses a close one tomorrow night, BUT (!), then just when we think the scenario will be repeated for a third weekend in a row, Regan stands on his head to snatch victory from defeat at Tsongas, and then runs the table the rest of the way in the regular season and the first two HEA tourney rounds to take us back to the Gahden.
