Interesting that you brought up Haydar and Dzed in the same post. As you probably know, they came to UNH in the same year. I vividly remember a conversation I had with Darren's father, Frank, about how he handled things when his son started with a new team. He told me that he stayed out of it, that Darren was an adult, that this was the next step to a professional career, and that following the lead of the coaching staff was the most important thing. He also offered a comment, and this is a half dozen games in, that Dzed's father had already called Umile a few times regarding playing time. For a lot of us, it wasn't a surprise when Dzed left after five games into his sophomore year. And, of course, the ironic thing is that Haydar went on to have a fabulous college career, an outstanding AHL career, and a few cups of coffee in the NHL. Dzed had none of that. Easy to say that Darren was the better player, but Dzed had skills, good skater, quick shot. Just not patient enough to let things play themselves out.

Thanks for sharing that insight, Greg. It's little things like that which make college hockey so much fun (at least to me). Back in the day, it was amazing how many little tidbits of info would find their way to anyone (and all this pre-social media) from just being around the program regularly. Stuff you would never have a snowball's chance in he11 getting at the pro level. HR seems to pick up on a lot of these things nowadays. When I "went away" I could still follow the scores and catch games from time to time, but the little insights (which obviously can sometimes be HUGE) were no longer there to help me round out the big picture.

Speaking of Matt Dzed's dad ... no matter how involved he may/may not have gotten, I can't imagine he was even close in the "hockey dad" department to #24's dad, whose son was also an incoming frosh that season (if memory serves?). Some of the stories (which will not be shared on this thread) were absolutely legendary. *Memorable* freshman class that season for sure. :)

I'll start off by saying that back in those days we got to know a lot of the parents, mostly due to going on all the legendary road trips, being the same age back then as a lot of the parents, and my involvement with the newsletter. Of all the fathers I ran into during those years, Frank Haydar was, without a doubt, the most perceptive. While he of course rooted hard for his kid and wanted him to do well, he really never said a bad work about the coaching staff in the four years that he came to games. I got to know Frank pretty well, consider him a friend 'til this day. Not to disparage many others that I ran across during those years, but he was one of a kind. I guess you could say RC's dad was one of a kind as well.

Parenthetically, I had a nice chat with Mike Souza's dad, Peter, before the Merrimack game Saturday night. We talked some about the days when Mike was a player at UNH. I told him that my first memory of his son was in March, 1996, in what would have been his senior year in high school. Mike had come up to a late season game with some of his buddies, just so he could check out the action of the team he would be playing for the next year. Peter did tell me that Mike loved it at UConn, could have seen himself staying there for a long time, but that (no surprise) the opportunity at UNH was too good to pass up. Just have to see how it goes. I'll remain optimistic until evidence to the contrary presents itself. But regardless, great to renew acquaintances with an old friend.

Bummer about Chris Kelly...left femur fracture. Ouch! Similar injury to our CMacD couple of seasons ago.

Kelly's was apparently a non-contact injury last night? Very, very curious ...

Yes just kind of lost his footing looked painful initially I thought it was his knee amazed it was a broken femur. And Conor McDavid out indef with broken collar bone. Oh in other news Warren F scores his first goal in a 2-1 loss. Ho hum the life of a hockey fan😉🏒

Someone whom I consider a knowledgeable, reliable source with a strong medical background suggests one of the possible causes of a spontaneous fracture of the femur may be (drum roll please ... ) ... steroid usage.

Just sayin' ...

Well that's a controversial assertion to float out there in cyber space!

Another possible cause is bone cancer. Hope not.

True ... and hope not, ditto. Femur fractures usually take some doing, involving substantial force/trauma. Not an everyday occurrence to sat the least ... and to happen spontaneously like in Kelly's situation, even less so.

Hey, there is a guy named Joe Snively who plays for Ylae; what are the chances of that?
Yea... he's a hack! :D

I will say this; son number two broke his femur with a twisting motion like Kelly. He was five, I think, and my wife and I got him his first bike (with training wheels!) for Easter. Off we went for a ride along with son number one and son number three and daughter number one (daughter number two not on the scene yet!). Anyway, he went up a driveway with a slight incline, got to the top and started to roll backwards and panicked. He twisted sideways, went down in a heap writhing in pain. Broken femur and a long recovery!

Interesting, a Salmon Arm player (Hutchinson) had this fracture last season. Jump into a shift, nothing weird, skated 2 strides and dropped. Crazy

Re: UNH Wildcats 2015-2016 (Part One) - Return of the "Champions of December"??

You're generally spot on, though even PWR is a bit meaningless at this point because it's so early and not enough "cross-pollination" has happened. In fact, if I'm not mistaken, they didn't even publish PWR, IIRC, until after the break in past years. We flagellated wildly this weekend, 27th to 16th, playing just one game! Those swings don't happen later In the year when more comparatives are in the mix.

Right now, all we should be focused on are the two numbers at the top of the board when each game ends!

UNH now 15th in PWR, and we picked up a lone point in the USCHO poll on Monday. Merrimack at 10th in PWR, with no change after their big 5-1 win over Bentley last night at the JAR. But, the game was much closer, 1-1, except for about 10 minutes at the beginning of the third period. Nevertheless, UNH will need to play at least 50 strong minutes on the 28th and should not take Bentley too lightly; the Falcons are not the AIC Yellow Jackets. Probably too early to begin a UNH-Bentley game thread.

Spoken like someone who has been waiting for this to happen for almost 20 years. Killing me, man! :p

Care to elaborate at this time where your rooting interests will lie for that one, Snively65?? :D

Yes indeed. In fairness, in addition to the other issues AND a possibility of it just being a downright fluke ... vitamin deficiency is another potential cause. Or in the case of my 8 year old cousin, who back in the day had his femur broken at a family outing ... a likely drunken 20 year old fellow cousin (former BU football player - yes, THAT long ago) falling on top of him while chasing a pop fly in a pickup softball game will do it every time, too.

Back on topic ... any indications prior to the trip to Lansing of anyone in the UNH camp being left behind?

Well, in the case of my son, it was neither steroids or a vitamin deficiency. Just a fluke accident I guess. My guess is Kelly got his skate caught in a rut while he was twisting! It is odd that it was not the result of any contact but these things happen.

UNH GAME DAY>>>> oh the excitement is building out in Lansing, MI as the 'Cats arrived there yesterday. Munn arena will be a buzz with the 'Cats and the Spartans battling it out. Tweets from players seem pretty optimistic as they look to swwweeepppp those Spartys!. Meanwhile, on the home front, we eagerly await the line up, searching for 'sprizes not unlike last weekend. ;)

It will have to be the Dan Parkhurst show, Pete staying home to teach PE as his beloved York High School (whom I found out is an alumni of the high school I teach, WHO KNEW???? :D small world) tonight and a seat at local watering hole with Direct TV for Sat's match, hoping to find the game. You?

Go 'Catttssss!!!!
