Re: UNH Wildcats 2014 Post-Season Thread: "Maybe Dick" Hunts the Great White Whale

UNH has an outstanding goalie coach in Dan Lupi of Goaltending Development Services (GDS).

Danny Tirone has worked with GDS instructors for a few years. Tirone will have ready access to GDS staff now that he is in Massachusetts/New Hampshire (as opposed to Iowa).

Thanks for keeping the info flowing about the team C-H-C! They say all things happen for a reason; I know what we are up against but still cannot wait to see how this team emerges this season. guess I'll see a lot of them coz we are season tix holders for the first time! Pretty sure I'll check out this goal tender tomorrow in Marlborough...Drop the Puck!!! :D

Re: UNH Wildcats 2014 Post-Season Thread: "Maybe Dick" Hunts the Great White Whale

Let's say UNH does have to start Tirone during 2nd semester 2015 .... thus reducing his tenure to 7 semesters .... it should be a non-issue.

If they can't locate another goalie in the intervening 3 years then they have will have larger issues than just goaltending.

According to Heisenberg's spread-sheet, Mike Robinson is set to arrive in 2016 - which means UNH will, uncharacteristically, carry three scholarship goalies in 2016-17 & 2017-18 (Which they would have regardless of Tirone's enrollment). If Robinson arrives on schedule, UNH will still easily be able to stagger scholarship goalies in the future and will only need to pick up another top goaltending recruit a year earlier than expected...

Re: UNH Wildcats 2014 Post-Season Thread: "Maybe Dick" Hunts the Great White Whale

17-year-old Michael Robinson recently enrolled at Lawrence Academy where he will tend the net for Head Coach Robbie Barker. Like several UNH goalies (e.g., Brian Foster, Kevin Regan, Jeff Wyer) Robinson has received instruction and training from Goaltending Development Services. Look for a recruit profile, including an interview with Robinson, in the near future.

Great "W" by the football team over Richmond 29-26 on the road. What a gutsy win with Goldrich down and out Valais engineers a drive capped off by a Steretti td. Just awesome to watch. Rod Langway interview was cool also.

That was a GREAT game. Vailas (go BG!!!) looked cool and calm, given the circumstances. Looks like he might have to lead the team for a bit, so I'm glad he's a veteran.

It would be nice if we had a defensive backfield. Maybe Darius can give us some insight as to why Coach Mac's teams can't find shutdown corners.

My Auburn grad girlfriend was finally introduced to the CAA, the "SEC of the FCS". I think she thought she was watching Pop Warner. I told her that's what happens when you don't pay your players.

So you leave Tirone in juniors...and what happens if Clark gets injured?

Where I come from you put your best team on the ice, no matter what. Doesn't matter if you can win the National Championship or if you have the talent to try to scrape together one win. I'd be disappointed if UNH DIDN'T make a move to try and shore up the goaltending position.

I mean really...we are going to save Tirone because we are banking on him winning us a championship in what would have been his 4th year? How has that worked out in the past? No, you put your best team on the ice now, and if that means he has to play, play him. If it means you can keep him on the bench because Clark is healthy and playing well and let him get acclimated to college hockey and step in next year without burning any eligibility, great. If he plays, so what....go out and recruit another great goaltender.

Also, who's to say that these future world-beating goalies will stay through their senior seasons?

Great comment! But, got me thinking about how many Hockey East goalies have gone pro before four years, and the only one that cones to my mind is Hellebuyck (sp?) at UML this past year.

THE Robbie Barker?? :)
http://www.lacademy.edu/page.cfm?p=1394&teamID=23&display=Coaches

Coach Robbie Barker returns to his hockey roots having played with the Spartans throughout his high school career. During his Lawrence experience, he won 4 ISL Championships, lettering and earning All-League honors in Football, Hockey and Baseball. After graduating, the standout defenseman went on to play a season in the USHL for Sioux Falls before enrolling at the University of New Hampshire, where Barker played in four NCAA tournaments, won two Hockey East regular season titles, two Hockey East tournament titles, played in two Frozen Fours, and was part of one of the most successful classes in UNH history, winning 104 games over his four years. Barker was awarded the Robert Cullen Unsung Hero award, for his outstanding play and leadership both on and off the ice. Barker was also recently named to Dick Umile’s all-time UNH team. Mr. Barker now teaches senior English, is the Director of Student Activities and Community Service Program, coaches Varsity Hockey and Varsity Baseball, all while heading Spaulding dormitory where he lives with his wife Marcelle and yellow lab Winnie.

Sigh...

It's been 20+ years since one of UNH's goalies (Jeff Levy I think?) left early of his own volition.

Re: UNH Wildcats 2014 Post-Season Thread: "Maybe Dick" Hunts the Great White Whale

You just seem pretty in tune with the football program - it was a compliment!
Thanks!

I've got nothing other than rule committee bias against defense as an excuse. I didn't see the game, was up north "enjoying" the < 50 degree temperatures.

Somewhat related, in limited NFL viewing so far this year, I have been impressed with D back play, especially after the pee-season flag fest.

Good to hear about Tirone. I am still more concerned about the lost D experience and overall goal scoring to graduation than I am about the goalie position.

Well you are absolutely right lots of big holes to fill to be sure. Looks like we will measure "success" for this team in other ways rather than what's in the "W" column. Guess we'll see soon enough!
