I'm not talking about NU games either ;) I do know that UNH had to post the opening for Colin Shank's position last year, per UNH/state policy. He never planned to leave - it was just a formality that the opening had to be posted when his contract ran out and was being renewed. Just postulating that could be the case here with the current Associate Head Coach posting.

Perhaps they are reorganizing? Or, it wouldn't be the first recent typographical/content error from the U, as much as it pains me to write that. Or, maybe they forgot to post the job in June. (Ouch.)

Did coach T. start later than June because Lassonde resigned unexpectedly? I found an article dated 08/17/2011 announcing Denver hiring Lassonde.

The thing that doesn't sit right with the Foley theory is that Coach Umile does things the right way, with class like a gentleman. I'd like to think he would not poach a coach this late in the summer or put himself in a position where that might become speculation if Foley leaving NU had nothing to do with UNH.

Tort's a class act. He coached my son in summer leagues in Augusta for a stint way back when he was on skates. Glad to see him moving on to something other than hockey. Nothing but the best wishes for him. Glad to see him working in Portland.

The near simultaneous time lines would be merely coincidental if Foley is hired at UNH. :-)

It's OK. Foley is no longer a student athlete, and therefore no longer subject to the "gentleman's agreement" between coaches. Assistant coaches are allowed to see if they get a better offer from other teams.

UNH tried to hire Foley three years ago when Lassonde left. He declined because he had made a commitment to Northeastern. Given that Foley has already been a favorite of the coach and the AD, I would be interested in the sequence of events that led to this point. There are three possible scenarios in my book. First, Foley had his dust up with Madigan first, informed Umile of it, causing Tortorella to be pushed out the door to create an opening. Second, Tortorella informed Umile that he was leaving, Umile made the call to Foley and he, in turn, orchestrated some sort of reason to leave Northeastern to take the UNH job. Or third, it could be, as you say, just a coincidence. I can't imagine in a million years that the first option is correct. Umile has way too much integrity to operate in that manner. And given the past relationship between the coach and his former two time captain, I am skeptical that Tortorella and Foley departing within a week of each other is just a coincidence. So I opt for scenario #2. As someone implied, poaching coaches from other programs does not violate any rules, except perhaps a gentleman's agreement between coaches. But, in the cut throat world of college athletics today, such agreements probably don't exist anymore. We are far away from the days of Charlie Holt, Bill Cleary, Snooks Kelly, et al.

As an aside, the pursuit of Foley by UNH reminds me of the days when former Red Sox GM Theo Epstein lusted after players such as Julio Lugo and Adrian Gonzalez. Both were on Theo's radar screen years before the landed in Boston. In both cases, how'd that turn out.
