Hockeyref, I hope you youtubed the Cox-Hislop-Clark video from1974 and Snively...if you think that our win over N.Dakota was something, watch that....for my existence with UNH hockey, some 39 years now, the best minute of hockey ever!

Oh I have seen that! Just unbelievable...can only imagine that happening today, for ANY team. They don't make em..like they used to! Must've been wild to have seen that in person! Great hockey memories for some of you!

Thank You 'Cats!!

Unlikely, with a completely different concept of defense in the game today, that anything will ever top that.

Not UNH, but connected in that after beating the Fighting Sioux we lost a heart breaker in the last 15 seconds to BU who then went on to do this in the national championship game: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_-mBI7jEfVU. Remembering how they pulled out games that year and watching them slide since, year by year I become more convinced that Coach Parker made a Faustian deal to capture one final national title.

Nice calls Darius, I remember watching that and could not believe their luck! If UNH could've ever gotten puck luck like that when we needed it, we'd have a couple of NC...alas we haven't.
Kudo's also to CHC, for some great writing this season....maybe you could help the Media Research department with the Timeline they put up this past year....somehow our first 2 trips to the Frozen Four aren't of note in our programs history! Neither our 77 trip to Detroit, nor the trip to Providence in 82 made the grade!! How will we ever get a jumbotron if we can't even transcribe our own history!!

Yup, we are a bounce and a Vanek removed from 2 national championships in the last 15 years.

BTW Carmine, reading your signature, a friend teaching at BU while a graduate student had Trivino in a class. Said he was a nice guy and a pretty good student and was surprised by the allegations.

Just to keep this board going...for a little while longer I suppose...who are you guys rooting for now that we are ..out? I am thinking another HE team...but haven't really taken the plunge yet. I do plan on tuning into the games..not one of those "anyone but BC" peeps tho! :p Any takers?

Coincidentally, the last year UNH hockey won the Hockey East championship was also 2003. I was really hoping that history would repeat itself last night. :(

Geesh, you're getting into Parker @ BU Towards The End land here. 11 years without a HE title? Is UNH any closer to showing Umile the door?

Try this to get the message across. Awhile back the Atlanta Falcons had an awful coach who wasn't getting fired quickly enough. So, some kids at my wife's high school in the 'burbs took a For Sale sign off of another property and planted it on the guy's front lawn one night. Perhaps this might speed the process along? :D

Give me his NH address im in. Will take two programs that were left for the dead in providence college and Lowell. What these two new coaches have done in three years is remarkable. However it is possible their getting a small bonus from having the best 2 goalies in college hockey. Food for thought.

I think Chuck Murray's been over his house for dinner and drinks, so maybe he can help out. ;)

Goalies certainly help, but I give Lowell at least credit for putting in a system that maximizes the guy's impact. I was also thinking of Merrimac from a few years ago. You can't expect that team to compete every year but the coach was doing something right as they had a pretty good run for a few years over there in arguably the worst facility and least resources in the league.

Re: UNH Wildcats 2014 Post-Season Thread: "Maybe Dick" Hunts the Great White Whale

Sad to say, Coach Umile hasn't ever so much as sent me a Christmas card, even though I've admittedly "gone soft" since the old days (even if "Maybe Dick" was my invention here). Probably at least in part because I've heard from too many people who know a lot LOT more about the inner workings at UNH than I do that Coach is on a virtual lifetime contract at this point. At some point, it makes no sense to me personally to beat the guy up for trying hard but coming up short. And I have no question in my mind whatsoever that Coach Umile is totally committed and still invested in whatever success the program continues to enjoy. I honestly do not see him just sticking around to pad his State of NH pension. We can disagree with his "motions", but this is not a guy "going through the motions".

IF I was a young AD (y'know, someone with FAR less than the 35+ years of experience the incumbent enjoys) and wanted to make my mark at UNH, I would probably be pushing hard for a change. Someone younger (like the "hypothetical me" as AD ;) ) who shared the same long-term drive and ambitions. And at the very least, if my hands were tied as BS35's may indeed be now (see lifetime contract) then maybe I'd be firing assistants and pressing Coach to hire younger guys. That's not meant as a slight to Coaches Tortorella and/or Borek BTW. It's just the only "move" that might be out there on the table, IF the "big" move indeed needs to wait.

But we don't have that guy in charge now. We have a guy in charge (BS35) who embraces the status quo to the extreme. When Coach Lassonde moved on, there was an opportunity for the UNH coaching staff to "get younger". From what I've seen to date, I have a lot of time for Coach Tortorella ... but if I'm the hypothetical young hard-charging AD, you can bet your bottom dollar that guys like Pat Foley, Mark White, Mike Souza, Josh Cicocco, etc. would have been on the short list for that position. Give Coach Umile the option to keep Coach Borek or hire Coach Tortorella (not both), and bring in one of the young alums with baseline coaching experience.

But that didn't happen, now did it? Presumably, Coach Umile insisted that he get his guys on board (keep Borek and hire Tortorella) and given the choice of standing up and forcing some sort of change in the current dynamics, BS35 presumably caved in to his wishes. Short of one of those guys deciding to move on voluntarily, or some unexpected *opportunity* arising (see McCloskey, November 2013), any changes at the assistants level now are unlikely for the forseeable future as well.

As I've said elsewhere on here months (if not over a year) ago, UNH Athletics right now is all about complacency. And for better or for worse, nowhere is it more evident in the Men's Hockey program.

For what it's worth ... I'm rooting for UMass-Lowell in the D-1 tourney. Second option is ABBC&ND. Coach Bazin has things running like a top at Lowell, he's still relatively young AND he's an alum. We all better get used to the idea that UML is more than Hellebuyck (sp?) and promises to be around as a factor for the forseeable future. It's up to them whether they become "UMaine" (period of glory, which includes D-1 honors) or if they become "UNH" (period of glory, without D-1 honors). But they are up there for keeps, make no mistake.
