Re: UNH Wildcats 2014/2015 - Wait 'Til Next Year!!!

I believe 2 PM Saturday.

Where did you see that Felgie? UNH Illinois St is still showing TBD on the NCAA FCS tourney website. I hope you know something ahead of the rest of us because that's a good day for a game at Cowell.

Actually, you might be onto something Felgah. I just checked the four letter network's website and it shows NoDak State and Sam Houston scheduled for Friday the 19th. Nothing for the 20th yet, but you have to assume I'm guessing the Cats have to play the next day. Let's get a confirmation on that...

Man, I'm hoping Sam Houston knocks off the Bison. I watched the ND State Coastal Carolina game today. ND looks every bit like a team that's won the FCS title three years running. Very tough team. Can't lose sleep over them yet though...Illinois St hung 59 points on E Washington. Cats are going to have a lot to deal with against them.

I seem to be missing everyone's jokes lately. Part of getting old(er) I guess. Sorry.

Just curious ... who do you think is going to "get serious" and "evaluate the coaching situation"?

I think I know the answer, but I'm not sure you're going to like it ...

On your last point, we could not be more in agreement. In business parlance, the board of directors seems asleep at the wheel while the CEO delivers ever more dismal results. My hope is that the shareholders' voices are heard soon, without the need for revolt.

At least we had tonight's 7 goals as momentary salve.

Re: UNH Wildcats 2014/2015 - Wait 'Til Next Year!!!

Goals by Quast, Willows, Kelleher, Cleland , and 3 by Downing.

Re: UNH Wildcats 2014/2015 - Wait 'Til Next Year!!!

Good for him. You ask the question "If you were advising him on strategy, what would you suggest?" I'm pretty sure one of my suggestions would NOT have been to issue a whining, self-serving press release that blames everyone else (including the press, ironically) except himself. He was/is being given a chance to return to school, AND stay out of jail. Guess that wasn't good enough, now he wants to air "his side of the story" (guess what - no one cares anymore) and whine - oops - *inform* us about all of the "immeasurable damage" all these bad people have conspired to cause him.

Last week I'm reading "Letters to the Editor" about Victim #2 giving of his free time to tutor a young goalie (admirable, but in retrospect it's fair to ask whether perhaps that was another part of the *strategy* from his legal team??) and now he HAS to share "my side of the story" (again, no one cares anymore), all the while dragging a former teammate into the mire with him.

No wonder his teammates chose his back-up as an Alternate Captain last year, and didn't give him the same honor in advance of this season, when he was without question the most high-profile returning senior in the Men's Hockey program.

If there is a lawsuit, there will be public record of same. And if you think a lawyer's letter looking to shake down the media, the local authorities and/or the ex-girlfriend won't hit the media within 24 hours of arrival at their intended target(s), then you are being very naive.

I will say this though, Darius ... your defense of the subject is the most reasoned of the two I've seen this afternoon. :)

I’m amazed at the negative responses here to the statement issued by Casey DeSmith and his parents. Everybody’s entitled to an opinion (preferably an informed one), but the lack of respect and basic decency is just mind-boggling. I never imagined that any self-professed Wildcats fan could be so cynical and venomous -- or discuss such a serious situation in such a flippant way. He's not a paid professional, people. He's a 23 year-old kid who's had to fight a battle the likes of which I hope none of you (or your 23 year-old children) ever have to fight.

Put yourself in Casey DeSmith’s shoes for a minute. You spend your whole life from the time you’re 10 years old working to become an elite goalie. You make the mistake of having too many drinks one night, and the next thing you know your name is being splashed all over the newspapers, you’ve been suspended from school, suspended from the team, and you’re being accused of a violent crime.

I know Casey DeSmith -- and have personally read the police reports that describe what happened the night he was arrested. His ex found him drunk and dragged him out of a house -- without any shoes or shirt on. Think a guy could get away with doing that to a girl? Then when he couldn’t walk and kept falling, she jumped on top of him and screamed at him. Willows is mentioned because he was involved. He was at the house, and told the girl to leave Casey there to sleep it off. But she didn't. Willows also made a key statement at DeSmith’s school hearing. He testified that the girl told him on the phone the next day that DeSmith had actually NOT hit her. And yet, she called the cops and told them that he had -- and the world believed her, because nothing sells papers better than a juicy little fairy tale about a coed in distress and a good athlete gone bad.

If I were in Casey DeSmith’s shoes, I’d be ****ed off at a lot of people, too. And I would sure as hell look for opportunities to try to clear my name, probably in language that’s much angrier than what he’s used.

The media couldn’t wait to report that he’d been arrested and suspended and kicked off the team. But how many of them ever bothered to look into what really happened? ZERO. He’s got every right to be ****ed off. People everywhere (including people on this board) just assumed that he must be guilty of everything that was reported. An ex-girlfriend (who admitted to police that she was “tipsy” that night) would never lie about such a thing, would she? Oh no…

We’re starting to see a very different picture than what’s been reported about this incident before, and I’m glad that some of the actual facts are starting to come out. If you knew what I know, you'd be marching outside the Whitt with picket signs demanding justice for Casey DeSmith. Yeah, he went out and got wasted on a Saturday night – but he’s not the first UNH hockey player who ever did that, and despite Coach Umile's laughable quote about "higher standards" he certainly won’t be the last. The difference is, in this case there was an ex-girlfriend around who decided it might be fun to single-handedly put a bullet in his future. And if you don’t think losing your starting position on a D-1 hockey team and losing an entire semester of your senior year is damaging -- not to mention the impact that the mere presence of such an accusation all over the internet could have on a young man's future career(s) -- you might want to consider going back to college for a few extra semesters yourself.

Do you REALLY believe Casey would have been allowed to return to the school, or that nothing more than some community service would result from the laundry list of trumped-up criminal charges, if he’d actually been guilty of assaulting that woman and everything else the initial news reports said he was “allegedly” guilty of? Fat chance. If there'd been the smallest kernel of truth in it the school would have expelled him (earning huge Title IX points with the Feds), while the criminal justice system and the media would have fallen all over themselves to put his head on a pole and make an example out of him. But they didn't -- because even they couldn't ignore the real truth when it became known. Now that it’s all over and he’s allowed to talk about it, he’s come out and said he was not guilty. And obviously, the authorities whose business it was to examine all the facts of the matter came to the same conclusion.

But some in the media, the same ones who hid behind the word “allegedly” as they tossed one Molotov cocktail after another at him over the past 3 months, apparently remain hell-bent on drawing more blood. Did you see the article in the Foster’s paper about his day in court -- the one that triggered this statement from Casey and his parents? It got just about every single fact concerning the outcome of his court hearing wrong. Worse than that, the writer of that article clearly tried to make it look like Casey was guilty of everything he’d been charged with, and to imply that somehow he just managed to get off easy. She wrote that he pleaded guilty to assault, which he absolutely did not – he pleaded NOT guilty to assault. She wrote that he pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct. That was also dead wrong. She wrote that he accepted a plea bargain to avoid jail time, which was totally false again. About the only thing she got right was his name. Tell me you wouldn’t be a little ****ed off if the media was THAT determined to spread lies about YOU (or your son or daughter) – and tell me you wouldn’t want to do something to try to clear YOUR name.

This kid played his tail off for UNH. He was the team MVP. The way the school and the media judged him guilty until proven innocent, the way the coach and athletic department turned their backs on him, and the way some fans on this site and elsewhere have thrown (and are still throwing) grenades at him makes me sick. Casey DeSmith got hosed by this woman, and by the school, and by the media, and by the entire "judge-first-ask-questions-later-if-ever" process that our society, as evidenced right here on this board, has lowered itself to. And in my opinion, anybody who doesn’t have sympathy for a young person caught up in such no-win circumstances should take a long, hard look in their own mirror.

I hope he sues the girl and the school and the newspapers and anybody else who said or printed lies about him. Contrition? Let THEM show some contrition for what THEY did to HIM -- right after they hand him a big settlement check.

It looks like it'll be Illinois State next round at Cowell. They're crushing E Washington late in the 4th quarter. We're down to the four best teams in the country in FCS...no easy games any more.

ISU appears to be the cream of the crop. Nearly ran the table in the best and deepest conference in the country. Avenged their only loss (to Northern Iowa) in the tourney, the same NOrthern Iowa team that ended the NDSU juggernaut's forever-long unbeaten streak.

I believe that we are (at best) the 3rd or 4th best team in the country, no matter what the polls/poles say. I think our #1 ranking reflects some legacy goodwill towards the CAA, which was definitely in a down cycle this year. This will be a brutal matchup, and I consider us material underdogs.

Unfortunately, I will be on the way to the airport to come home to the States for the holidays, and won't know who won until I land the next morning. Frustrating!!!

It just showed up on the UNH Athletics website. You are correct Felger. 2pm Saturday. Cowell Stadium. Be there. Aloha.

Do you have more information on the degree to which he "resisted arrest"?

Re: UNH Wildcats 2014/2015 - Wait 'Til Next Year!!!

Let's boil this down to some of the uncontested facts, and the rather obvious questions they beg ...

OK there is a difference between being "drunk" and what sounds like an incident where he "blacked out". Not for anything, but he is not a small guy - he's a D-1 athlete - and we are to believe his ex "dragged him out of a house"? Strong gal admittedly, impressive ... but why??

If he's in the state he was in where he doesn't even know he's apparently being dragged out of his apartment buck naked by a young woman half his size ... why should anyone believe the rest of the story you are relating here? Leading to ...

"Actual facts" and "knowing what you know" ... so you were an eyewitness to this incident? Your account of this incident was related to the police then?? If the answer to either is "no", then your purported "facts" are heresay, nothing more.

And as far as "getting wasted on a Saturday night" ... the idea is that it's OK to drink to the point of blacking out, and losing any small degree of control and accountability for your personal actions, just because (to paraphrase) "everyone else does it"? That IS what you're saying, right?

I'm sorry, but I'm still struggling with the visual of the young co-ed dragging his unconscious body out into public to apparently stage some phoney baloney assault, for some questionable, fuzzy and poorly defined *motive(s)*.

And as far as Coach Umile's decision ... yeah, I'm sure he was *thrilled* to jump on the first opportunity to get rid of his 3 year starting goalie, especially with the bulk of last season's defensemen leaving the program, it's not like he could have relied upon his experience to work through some of the rest of the team's growing pains this season. Makes perfect sense to me.

I hope he sues the girl and the school and the newspapers and anybody else who said or printed lies about him. Contrition? Let THEM show some contrition for what THEY did to HIM -- right after they hand him a big settlement check.

... because that's the new American Way, after all. Personal accountability and responsibility are SO old school. Just declare yourself a *victim*, blame the media and/or some faceless deep-pocketed entity, and wait for the settlement check, right?

Listen, I'm hardly a shill for UNH, and my thoughts on the events that unfolded on the Women's side of the program speak to that, but these after-the-plea so-called *disclosures* aren't convincing to me at all, for the reasons outlined. Sorry.

To everyone else - sorry for not leaving this one alone. Regrettable incident, hope all parties find peace and move on with the rest of their lives. I'm all for a good redemption story, and I thought that might be where this one was headed until recently. Too bad. :(

First of all, it is a privilege to play a sport at UNH and he did plead guilty in a court of law over a charge....I didn't see any reports that said anything outside of the facts that were in the police reports. DeSmith is barking up the wrong tree here.

There is this new thing called "wifi"!! I got an email last summer from someone on Aer Lingus over the Atlantic headed to NYC last summer!!

Yup. I'm a huge user of GoGo wifi on Delta. Problem is, Rio-Atlanta flight has no wifi (I'm on it monthly). Even if it did, Delta/Gogo don't allow streAming. I have followed games on ESPN game cast from time to time, when desperate!

Meanwhile, UNH won the game and the SOG last night!!

Yeah sweet! Was following on Twitter and texts from friends at the game..was starting to look like the movie "Ground Hog Day"... Very glad we responded and am happy for Downing getting that hattie . Guess it was Quast and Clelands first career goals so good for them. Willows/Kelleher continued to roll as well... Anyone at the game know about Clark getting injured (his hand skated over) ? Hmmm So we will take it going into the break. Tix for the fball game go on sale at noon so get ready!!!

This story has become a convoluted mess from all of the conflicting reports over just what...he was eventually charged with in the end, at least, for me. An article in yesterday's Concord Monitor has more on this sad saga including further comments from CDSmith and says he entered a plea of not guilty re the assault charge hence the comm service etc he must do over the next 12 months. Hopefully I have this correct ...I strive to be a very fair person and if I'm wrong, I'm wrong.

The article also has more commentary from him than was reported in the UNH release. It also says the family is considering legal action against the publication that reportedly got the facts of the case wrong..And if that is indeed the case then I look forward to seeing a big retraction from this publication in the very near or extended future. Would provide the link but maybe it's best to move along...

I have no problem providing the link. Listen, I have no problem with UNH's handling of the case, but if the media was wrong then that shouldn't be whitewashed or overlooked either. Much of the reaction, whether it is knee jerk or otherwise on this forum, has been a result of what has been read in the press. In our digital/binary age, where everything is either a "1" or a "0" it seems like there is always someone right and always someone wrong. It is quite possible that in this case there is more than one "guilty" party.

Thanks for providing the link as my IPad does a lousy job of that! Agree totally with your points...it will be more than interesting to see how this pans out for UNH Athletics..they do not look good on this one in the court of public opinion as voiced by the comments after the article. But then...they haven't looked good in the most recent past either with the woman's hockey issue. I do believe there's another thread about that. ;) Sigh.

So where is this media article that got all the facts wrong? It is extremely difficult to win a court case against a media outlet as you have to prove they got the facts wrong on purpose.
