Thanks for posting, HockeyRef and C-H-C. Sure hope than Dan is ok. To reminisce, and carry on a lamenting theme on this thread, Winnik was one of our players who made his living by going to the hard areas around the net, and was justly rewarded with a pro offer to skip his senior year, and is one of only a handful of former UNH players to stick around for a few years in the NHL. Always thought that we would not have been one and done in the NCAAs with the 2-1 loss to Miami in 2006-2007 if he had stayed for his senior year.

Re: UNH Wildcats 2014/2015 - Wait 'Til Next Year!!!

The other set-up-around-opposition-net guy's name that I was trying to remember was Greg Burke, when he was healthy. There sure have not been many over the years, so I put this on the coaching, and recruiting.

As the old saying goes ... "If you always do what you always did, you’ll always get what you always got."

Reports are that he's doing fine which is good news! He sounds like he was a great player for our 'Cats...

College Hockey: Family affair for Boyd brothers:

“It sounds like they’re not giving up many shots, but we’re more concerned with ourselves,” UNH coach Dick Umile said. “Defensively we were not a very good team on Saturday so we need to get back to focusing on that this weekend.

“The first 10 minutes were fine. We gave up a power-play goal there at the 10-minute mark and very quickly after that they scored three goals. At the end of the first period they were just eating us up in our own end. It was just poor coverage on our part. Couple turnovers. We found ourselves behind 4-1 at the end of the first period.”

Michigan State’s Travis Walsh, a junior defenseman, is the son of the late Shawn Walsh, who guided the University of Maine to two national titles and a 399-215-44 record from 1984 to 2001.

Google-ing, it sounds like Winnik will be OK, was not taken to hospital. I thought of him the 1st time I saw Greg Burke. Unfortunately for the team and Greg it was not to be. Let's hope some of this season's Freshman are only around for 3 years with subsequent seasons' Frosh back filling.

Re: UNH Wildcats 2014/2015 - Wait 'Til Next Year!!!

Oops, arrived an hour early for my first game tonight. Got seats directly behind Clark's end for 1st and 3rd. Always strange to see so many new names on jerseys at one's first game of the season.

Late goal by Kelleher cuts the MSU lead in half to 2-1 at the end of the first period.

More growing pains for the young, inexperienced 'Cats tonight. Hoping for a bounceback tomorrow night.

Kept up with it via Twitter and texts with fan pals tonight; sounded like their GK played very well when he had to in crunch time. Interesting line combos for the 'Cats tonight? yes? no? Looking forward to seeing it live tomorrow night. We are indeed young and that's the way of it. Any bright spots to speak of?? Seems like they battled back to tie it then..? Loved the game call on you tube "two freshman and a sophomore getting it done" on the Kelleher goal. On another note fun to watch Kevin G's team win in ManchVegas tonight....Onward 'Cats!

mike ayers taking over next year? ;)

honestly wondering. don't know if any of you have an inside scoop as to what Umile's plans are.

Re: UNH Wildcats 2014/2015 - Wait 'Til Next Year!!!

A goal and an assist for Clark made it a little difficult for his teammates.

Lot of little (and not so little) mistakes to clean up, including Cleland's missed poke check that led to the game winner. Seemed like there were a lot of Spartans running free down the middle as well. And it would be nice if the forwards could lift the puck occasionally. Goalie lying on the ice and they shoot the puck into him?

They're interesting to watch. Hopefully they'll start figuring out some of this stuff.

Agreed; real tough night for Clark. But, he was not getting much help from his teammates, either. Worst passing that I have seen by any UNH team in over two decades, which I attribute to their inexperience. And, some folks here on the off-season thread thought Camper might see a lot of healthy scratches, whereas others thought his being a senior would be awarded by Umile; but, first line assignment really surprised me.

However, I did not think that the Spartans were much better. Overall, reminded me of a typical AHA game in sloppiness. If the Cats can do a better job of breaking the puck out of their own zone, I think that they will have a chance to even up things on Saturday night.

The final few minutes after Michigan scored its fourth goal (the only goal that I thought was not a total giveaway by UNH) was exciting, as the Cats finally began connecting on some passes, with several great scoring chances and a goal to get them within one again.

Face off in the offensive zone on Michigan icing with about 70 seconds remaining allowed Umile to pull Clark for the extra attacker, so there was hope right up to the bitter end. Glad that I did not leave early to beat the traffic, as some fans did. Speaking of which, a lot of empty seats tonight.

No smiley faces in this post.

Speaking of the bitter end, ZERO sense of urgency from Downing as he lollygagged around with the puck at the right point with time running out. As if he had no idea of the clock. Once again, a lack of senior leadership. Brought to mind a similar play, in a similar situation, from Brian Yandle a few years ago.
