Re: UNH Wildcats 2014/2015 - Wait 'Til Next Year!!!

e.cat didya drive down from Maine? And who might you be directing your rath toward? Could it be...BS35 or whatever the current number is? 😉 Thinking of our pal Snively65 who is no doubt suffering through a 4-0 Harvard v Bentley game...
No! I was all set to watch the game on FCS and go down to Durham tomorrow. Snives must be beside himself. *** is going on at the Whitt? Get your act together. Get some people in there who know how to run the clock and put in a net peg!

Yep every dog...has his day 😉. First the score board ... Hey it's going around on FB that the techs actually drilled into the refrigeration pipes accidentally while setting the goal posts but that is just a rumor at the point!

Find that hard to believe as they would have to drill through concrete.....though I suppose the cement could have failed after 18 years.

Pretty sure they had a refrigeration issue when I was a student as it was ammonia based and they promptly changed it soon after

The crew did have to jack-hammer (electric) through the cement to get to the leak. It took about an hour to excavate a 6" x 3' slot in the cement.

Re: UNH Wildcats 2014/2015 - Wait 'Til Next Year!!!

Being down 4-0 now, any Bentley PPG(s) will likely be meaningless, and even less likely a GWG. :D :(

Maybe they will pull out a *win* on the SOG's. :p

I actually watched a more entertaining game at the Bright tonight than one might believe given the 5-1 score, although Bentley was only able to capitalize on one of its five PPs, and that happened in the their 15 seconds of five on three. Once our goalie settled down after two minutes on the bench midway through the first, the game was pretty even the rest of the way, with Bentley dominating the second with little to show for their efforts, although they did squeak out a meaningless SOG victory. I think that Harvard has a very good team this season, and I would not be surprised to see them give Colgate a run for the ECAC title. And, glad that I did not drive to Durham tonight. Ok, so now BS35+1 definitely owes us a Jumbotron for this latest embarrassment. Bright has a nice new Jumbotron, although I do realize that Harvard's balance sheet might be a little stronger than ours? I grew up in Durham watching games at the outdoor Batchelder Rink, where something like this latest snafu never happened. Will there be a public announcement somewhere for whether the game is on at the Whitt tomorrow evening (5 pm)?

Re: UNH Wildcats 2014/2015 - Wait 'Til Next Year!!!

OK...from what I was told when I called the Whitt box office to confirm game time, is that it's "kids day" at the Whitt (whatever that is) and they wanted to have enough time for families? Also, there's a men's bball game at 7, and other stuff going on so it seemed like the most "logical" time to have the game...
As if basketball competes for fans with hockey or people are going to hightail it to Lundholm after the hockey game. 452 at their home opener vs Thomas College, and from what I gather that's a big crowd for them.

I know, right? And it's not the only 5:00 start we have this season, the Feb. 28 game v Merrimack is as well.

haha thanks for this update. I feel somewhat vindicated for sharing that rumor, ha! :p

Re: UNH Wildcats 2014/2015 - Wait 'Til Next Year!!!

I'm wondering what the odds are for the game to be played tonight. The leak needs to be patched successfully, and whatever product they use to patch the concrete need to be dry and cured in order for the ice to freeze over the area.

I was thinking that, too. What are the backup options? Dover? VWA, Providence? Is the Jackson's Landing rink still there? How cold is it in Durham?

Re: UNH Wildcats 2014/2015 - Wait 'Til Next Year!!!

They can probably patch the concrete with a quick drying grout of some sort, but even after its "dry", it generates heat until it's completely cured.

From the SeacoastOnline article:

“We had a hole (in the ice) they discovered during ice-making,” UNH athletic director Marty Scarano said. “They epoxied it, tried to get it fixed, plug the hole, pressured it. It started leaking again. In that case you have no choice. Brine leaking under the ice not only compromises the ice but it compromises the concrete pad.”

Hubby the Engineer (smart, very smart) speculates it's a bigger fix than probably initially anticipated. He also wonders about the ice not setting up well after the Zamboni gets done with it on our end between periods...but that's prob. another thing. We'll see. Still looking for some kind of definite word on the game but it's early in the day...Sure hate to see people who paid for hotels, etc be disappointed but guess it's one of things as Darius pointed out!

They make a very fast setting high early strength concrete that they should be using. Sets up to about 5,000 psi in a little over an hour. Of course hillbillys in new hampster won't be aware of such a new fangled thing ;)

How're things going on Comm Ave for your boys? Looks like they were skating in fast setting high early strength concrete around 9:00 PM last night.

I'm a construction project manager, I'm fully aware of it. Did they have any on hand at the arena last night? Because unless the local Home Depot carries it, they are not going to find any after 5pm on a Friday night. There is a difference between "dry" and "cured". I don't care what the product specs are, until it's completely cured it's going to generate heat. Even in NH we know that heat > ice.

Most of the hole that was opened in the concrete is inside the net area - not in the crease or behind the net. Perhaps the ice doesn't have to be perfect in that area since no one skates over it (unless the net is knocked off).

Some parents came long distances (British Columbia, Florida) to see the weekend series against Providence.

I skated at Jackson's Landing a couple of years ago, I believe it's still open. A UNH game there would be great!

I didn't know that... good point. Eh, fix the leak and screw a piece of plywood over it. Good enough!
