Re: UNH Wildcats 2013-14 Season Thread

Admittedly surprised (OK shocked  ) to see Coach Umile break from his usual practice. and putting Wyer in goal last night. But I have no problem with the decision whatsoever. Wyer obviously enjoys the respect of his teammates, which has earned him that "A" despite sparse playing time over the first three years of his UNH career. So kudos to him for sticking with it, and you gotta think last night's start in the season opener can't be anything but a good thing for all.

It will be interesting to see how DeSmith performs tonight against the Gophers. Even if he's not on the top of his game due to the lack of work last night, you gotta hope that *maybe* the simple fact that he didn't play last night should act as a motivator for him? Not that he necessarily needed it ... but I don't think even the biggest DeSmith fans (and I'm probably in that group) can argue that his performance level dropped a little bit in the latter stages of last season (and in fairness, he was far from alone). Having to compete for his PT shouldn't concern him to the point of distraction. All in all, the game is about competition, and a little in-house competition can be a good thing. I commend Coach Umile for breaking from his typical approach in the past, and hope it will pay dividends for the team later in the season.

I suspect there are more than a few of us for whom UNH winning the "mythical December National Championship" has grown just a little tiresome. It also doesn't usually work out well with the "slow as molasses" start UNH experienced two seasons ago. I can live with a "steady if unspectacular" start somewhere in between, so long as the team plays its best hockey of the season in 2014 instead of 2013. As always, looking forward to seeing how it all turns out ... :)

Re: UNH Wildcats 2013-14 Season Thread

I think we all agree with you Chuck that we'd easily give up the 14-1 start for a 14-1 finish! However we always seem to forget how elite it is to get to the Elite Eight so often...that's not to say I'm happy with being a game away from the Frozen Four!! Here's to 2014 being a "banner" year! I say it that way because if you look at the new banners, the one dealing with UNH's Frozen Four appearances, you'll see that we have a 20 year cycle, as Matt our UNH Flag Guy pointed out to me! So you never know what's in store....

Re: UNH Wildcats 2013-14 Season Thread

Hey Guys,

I have compiled a TV schedule for the UNH games listed thus far for the season. If more games are added in the coming weeks, I'll continue to update the schedule. If I've made any mistakes, let me know and I'll correct them :)

Not listed on the schedule, in addition to FSN Plus, the game tonight against Minnesota can also be seen online at www.btn2go.com. If you get the Big Ten Network, then you are able to watch the game online.

Cheers!

Some friends and I are headed to Durham for this weekend's games. Do any of you have suggestions for things to do and places to eat while we are in town?

Thanks!

Re: UNH Wildcats 2013-14 Season Thread

This is one of the best defenses UNH has had in recent years and I think we will need Cleland and Quast to be minute eaters so we can rest TVR and Knodel and not have to worry. We also cant afford an injury with Maller gone so that will be the Achilles heel of the team if someone goes down and Randall is our 6.

Highly recommend you make a trip to Portsmouth, about 10-15 minutes from the UNH campus. Historic seaport town (settled in 1623), and loaded with some of the best restaurants around. Here's a few recommendations:

Portsmouth Brewery http://www.portsmouthbrewery.com/

Portsmouth Gas Light Company - fantastic brick oven pizza! http://www.portsmouthgaslight.com/

If you crave authentic New England seafood, I recommend either The River House (http://www.riverhouse53bow.com/) or for a more informal setting, Newick's which is located on Dover Point on the way to Portsmouth (http://newicks.com/)

You could spend an afternoon just strolling the streets of Portsmouth...tons of old buildings, especially in the Stawberry Banke section of town, which has some of the city's oldest buildings. NH's coastline is small (15 miles), but you could cruise down Route 1-A and check out our beaches. Hampton Beach is usually hopping during the summer time, but I suspect that some of the restaurants and other beach attractions may be closed for the weekend.

The foliage season has pretty much peaked, but you can still see quite a bit color just driving around some of the quiet roads in the Durham area. The mountains are about 1-1.5 hours away, but foliage season is pretty much past peak up there.

Anyway...hope that this helps! You can Google "Portsmouth, NH" and probably find a ton more places to consider visiting. Safe travels!

Like the previous post mentioned Portsmouth is a great place to go for any type of food you could want. If you want something really good junk food after the games go down there to Gilley's a food trailer parked next to the parking garage. I recommend the chili cheese fries.

If you're craving Chinese I'd say go to the oriental delight in dover, about 10 minutes from campus. Another couple of restaurants that I feel are worth visiting are Christopher's third street grille and the farm both near downtown dover. Dover isn't as nice to visit as Portsmouth, but it won't be as busy either.

Breakfast options are Youngs located on Main Street on campus.
Harvey's bakery or weeks cafe in dover (both right downtown) and the friendly toast in Portsmouth (will probably have a wait).

Other than that enjoy the visit, I've lived in Michigan and I've lived in New Hampshire, and if you're experience is anything like mine you'll love it here.

Wolverine, Scott's recommendation of Portsmouth is an excellent one. The places he listed are great. I would also suggest the Surf Restaurant. It can get pricey but the meal will be terrific. Anyways, if you go to Portsmouth, there are plenty of choices to eat and drink. Bars are everywhere. It is one of New England's best small cities.

In addition to what Scott said, you may want to check out Red Hook Brewery and Smuttynose Brewery in Portsmouth. Great places for beer lovers. Red Hook is a brewery and restaurant, while Smuttynose is pretty much just for brewery tours. If you're looking for a place to eat in Durham before a game, any of these places could be good options: Pauly's Pockets, Libby's, Bella's, or one of the decent, but not amazing, pizza places (durham house of pizza or wildcat pizza).

Also, the best breakfast place EVER (at least in my opinion) is the Big Bean located roughly 4 miles from campus in Newmarket, NH.

Enjoy Durham and the Seacoast area!

Any word at all on the Goumas injury? There has been no news on it. I am thinking we will need him this weekend.

Re: UNH Wildcats 2013-14 Season Thread

Portsmouth Brewery at 56 Market Street has their own craft brews on tap and a decent pub menu; under same ownership as Smuttynose. Nice ambience and much better beer than Red Hook (owned by Anheuser Busch), in my opinion.

Should be a great weekend series between the two teams that each recently held the longest consecutive post-season appearances.

I don't believe Redhook is owned by AB-Inbev, but they do have a distribution agreement with AB in order to get their beer to all parts of the US. They are owned by the Craft Brew Alliance, which is Redhook, Kona, Widmer Brothers, and Omission, formed during a merger back in 2006 or 2007, AB-Inbev is something like a 30% stock owner but not the majority owner. That is if I didn't have too many samples on my last tour and remember right. The beers in the brewery are also pilot brews sometimes with Redhooks backyard series. Portsmouth Brewery has better food, as far as beer, it depends on what you are looking for... http://portsmouthbrewery.blogspot.com/ is a great spot to check out whats on tap, as they don't have much that the brewery itself or Smuttynose doesn't make. Either Place gets my thumbs up, along with Libby's as that is my go to for good quick food and cheap beer before the games.

Other than that enjoy the visit, I've lived in Michigan and I've lived in New Hampshire, and if you're experience is anything like mine you'll love it here.

When I went up to the Traverse City area of Meechigan for my brother's wedding, it felt like I hadn't left NH, except for cherry orchards instead of apples.

Trumpet, while the Portsmouth Brewery, Smutty and Red Hook are great, you can also check out the fruits of NH's new nano brewery law for some unique brews you won't find anywhere else.

In Portsmouth there is Earth Eagle Brewings, which specializes in gruits, and Great Rhythm Brewery, which will be at the New Hampshire Brewfest on Saturday (held at the Red Hook facility. Additionally, there is the 7th Settlement Brewery, a new brew pub in Dover.

If variety is your thing, the Thirsty Moose Taphouse in Portsmouth has 116 beers on tap.

If you want to see some football, you can tailgate the UNH football game on Saturday for cheap ($15 ga tkt/$15 per car tailgate fee), although it would be an understatement to say that it will pale in comparison to the Big House.

Re: UNH Wildcats 2013-14 Season Thread

Thanks everyone for the suggestions!

Libby's is already on our agenda, as I believe the area Michigan Alumni are meeting there Saturday to watch our football game before heading over to the rink.

Sounds like we'll have to make our way to Portsmouth to sample a beer or several.

I'm looking forward to the hockey games. Should be interesting to see how they go. Michigan has a young team (10 freshman). The youth shows most on our defense, where we lost 2 great players early to the NHL.

Yea I made some trips up there and it was nice, and reminded me if home. Unfortunately I lived in Grand Rapids which is a fine city but the area just seems like an extension of the Midwest. Coming from New Hampshire originally it just wasnt for me.

Thanks for bringing me up to date, [UNH]Rig. My info must date pre-2006, so good to learn about the new ownership of Redhook. Widmer and Redhook both date back to the early days of craft brewing in Washington state, and I really liked Red Hook's brews at their brewery and pub along the canal in Seattle when I lived there. But, then I sensed that the brews were just not the same quality by the time Red Hook opened their Newington brewery, when I believe that they were initially under the umbrella of AB-Inbev. A college buddy's son worked there for a couple of years, at the time the large vessel exploded (maybe killing an employee?). So, I will need to make a return visit, but not tomorrow when I will be in a rush to reach Lake Whitt for my first UNH game of the season.

I like hoppy IPAs, so one of my all-time favorites is Portsmouth Brewery's Five C's IPA, which they roll out only a couple times each year (trivia contest: name the five hops that they use in Five C's IPA).

Back in the early 90s, I tried to entice my brother from Colorado to throw in with me and make a bid on the old Frank Jones Brewery and equipment, which was sold at auction for a charm, and became Smuttynose, I think.

Always look forward to UNH - Michigan games, as I almost went to Ann Arbor to pursue a PhD in geology after doing well at their summer geology field camp in Jackson Hole; still have lots of Michigan geology alum friends. Good to see the love shown here on this thread to their visiting fans, which I also found returned to me by Wolverine fans when I visited Yost for a couple of Bentley games two years ago (of course, I first had to explain to them were Bentley was located).

Was wondering that myself. Hope to see him out their this weekend. Any chance of seeing both goalies again this weekend? I would think DeSmith would get both starts but might depends on what happens Friday night
