Re: UNH Wildcats 2013-14 Season Thread (Part 2)

Which the 'cats have not done all year.

First time for everything; no time like the present! ;)

BC would likely have handled a long undefeated streak going into the playoffs just fine, but not having to deal with it didn't cost them much and gives them less to worry about. Worst case for the Eagles is MN wins out, meets BC in the tournament and MN has higher seed last change, etc. I've not seen BC play much this year, but if they run into a team that is 3 - 4 lines deep that can skate with them and be aggressive...

No doubt the Eagles are one talented team. I mean...just look at their freshman class of this season and of course there's this guy everyone calls "Johnny Hockey". Great goal tending in Demko and heck, they are formidable! That being said...go get 'em ND! (A MN/BC title game would be something and with this being an even year and all!) :D

All this sudden love and faith for a Notre Dame team that is meeting the one seed reveals just how soft of a draw UNH got in this tournament

Re: UNH Wildcats 2013-14 Season Thread (Part 2)

Hah! You are probably correct. Somehow Union did it to BC last year

Somehow? Did you not watch BC last year? Worst BC team in 15 years. The only surprise was maybe Milner failing down the stretch. People forget just how insane he was in the 2012 title run (this also would be a good counterpoint for the knuckledragging mouthbreathers that claim BC goaltenders just sit there and let low-quality shots hit them in the chest because of all that talent in front of them, but they wouldn't understand because they didn't watch the actual games anyway).

This thread does make me feel good about BC's chances after seeing e.cat go off on another one of his anti-BC rants that seems to be good luck.

Anyway, you guys have an interesting series coming up as well. Not sure what to think on this one.

Welp, we kinda like to say "it's better to be lucky than good" around here! Don't know if I'd call NU a 'soft draw'. Who ever comes to play this weekend wins it, pretty simple in my mind but I guess it remains to be seen! ;)

A agree. NU has some serious scoring talent in sophomore Kevin Roy and freshman Mike Szmatula, and a senior goalie Clay Witt who will be making his last stand in his collegiate career. The Cats need to show up with everything that they have this weekend if their seniors want to seek some redemption at the Garden.

Matti Kaltiainen
Tim Kelleher
John Muse
Parker Milner

Zero (0) NHL games between all four of them, combined. Muse and Milner have both played more in the ECHL than the AHL up to this point in their careers.

And as good as they were, both Scott Clemmensen and Cory Schneider (the latter at least 'til now) have been pretty much career NHL back-ups. For what it's worth, ditto UNH's Ty Conklin. Clemmensen has overachived IMO, and arguably Schneider has underachieved.

But it's not like any of these guys have risen to the level of Tim Thomas (UVM), Jonathan Quick (UMass Amherst), Jimmy Howard or even recently Ben Bishop (UMaine), or arguably Dwayne Roloson (UMass Lowell). So yeah, the BC goalies HAVE benefitted from huge talent playing in front of them. Not unlike BU for that matter (see Millan, Kieran). Who cares, though? BC's won D-1 titles regardless (as did BU with Millan). So what if the talent level of your goalies hasn't historically been anywhere near the elite level? Big woop.

Excellent post, Chuck. But, you left out Rickie DiPrieto; dumbest NHL contract evah. :-)

You missed the point, Chuck. There are some people out there that feel their team's goalie faces tougher shots or more shots than BC goalies and that BC's goalies just sit there and collect their ring. We all know this is wrong; well those of us that watch the games. Say for instance Muse standing on his head in overtime vs. Miami in 2008 while BC was getting run out of the building before coming down and scoring on their way to Denver and a 2008 title (with a whopping defense of Aiello, Filangieri, Brennan, Petrecki, Sneep and Kunes). Or Muse making the timely saves in 2010 (breakaway vs Miami at Ford Field for instance). Or more importantly Milner facing a load of great chances in the 2012 run and turning away pretty much everything. He was out of his mind and anyway that paid attention knew it.

Happy arguing!

DiPietro never won anything of significance at BU, except maybe a Beanpot (and I'm not even sure about that?).

Ricky D. makes Cory Schneider and Ty Conklin look like Jacques Plante and Ken Dryden ... :D

Fair points, Carmine. As a DRW fan, I can draw a comparison with Chris Osgood, who won't be going into the HOF anytime soon, but played out of his skull in the two years when he was the Wings' starting postseason goalie (1998 and 2008) on Stanley Cup-winning teams, and actually had folks talking about his potential HOF credentials in 2009 until the Wings lost in 7 to Pittsburgh.

Sounds kinda silly in retrospect that there was even that kind of talk. Osgood was good but hardly great, and some of us never quite forgot (even if we eventually forgave) him for some total rocks he pulled in the mid-'90's that led the Wings to bring in Mike Vernon from Calgary to get their first Cup in their four-in-a-decade-plus run. In fact, between the 3 guys who won Cups in goal for Detroit, consensus is that he's probably the 3rd most talented, behind Hasek and Vernon (who had previously won a Cup with the Flames), but Osgood won two of the four, and he was great AND clutch in both of those Cup runs. So he's probably the "Muse" of BC's similar run.

Just goes to show the premium that gets placed on clutch performance. And deservedly so. See Luongo, Roberto.

But to be fair, he made 78 saves in that four overtime loss to St. Lawrence in the NCAA regional...not exactly his fault that he didn't "win" anything.

Matti Kaltiainen I believe played for BC at the behest of the Bruins as he was their draft pick and they wanted to keep an eye on his development. It turned out that he did not develop much and, as a result, the Bruins never signed him. Always remember him backing into the net while Colin Hemingway scored on him late in the 2003 season.

Re: UNH Wildcats 2013-14 Season Thread (Part 2)

NU and UNH are soft , im sure Providence and Lowell would love to play either as opposed to Maine or UVM.

You don't think Maine is soft? They haven't won a game against a team not named "Merrimack" in over a month.
