UNH Wildcats 2013-14 Season Thread (Part 2)

Ok so coming from newbie here :). The first period wasn't stellar BUT I thought we kept pace and put in a much better effort. MC plays a tough scrappy game; we had a better fore check than last night. Thought we played a very poised third period; the back to back goals were amazing.
That's my take on it and am so glad the Hockey Gods were looking out for us (for a change iMHO)

ok but how do you give up 35 shots in 30 min.unless they were from the other blue line???

Ya got me as Coach U said in the post game the first period wasn't pretty. I'm psyched we held on it was also a very rough game for both teams; felt we also maintained momentum after we gained the lead something we have struggled with. And DeSmith well he did a great job. So doubt that answers your question it's been a crazy couple of days! Let's Go Cats!

Re: UNH Wildcats 2013-14 Season Thread (Part 2)

As depressing as this is, and it really is depressing, there are still some enticing scenarios, the first and least likely is UNH in the 6-11 game vs Merrimack followed by a series against Northeastern. The other possibility which I think is more likely is a win tomorrow and Providence gaining one more point on Northeastern. That would put UNH in the 4-5 at Northeastern (If Northeastern ties BU) or at the Whit (With an NU loss) with the bye to rest.

It seems bleak but a Win with a BU win and a Providence win gives UNH the 4. Obviously there are countless other scenarios out there but hosting NU is what we should all be hoping for.

Not to sound corny but why come this far to lose hope with one game left. If we've all followed them this long whats 24 more agonizing hours?

Credit to Dropkicknh for keeping the faith last night in the face of a seemingly typical end-of-season crash-and-burn scenario.

Wish I could say that I'm filled with confidence looking ahead to the home best-of-three vs. Northeastern weekend after next ... but for a change, UNH wasn't the spotlight choke-a-roonie team in the shakedown this last weekend of the regular season. In fact, they only earned the bronze for making Merrimack look like the second coming of the Montreal Canadiens circa 1978, which is mooted by the fact that they (UNH) did still somehow end up with the bye AND home ice in the quarters.

Earning the silver choke medallion ... take a bow, Northeastern. Two straight losses to a BU team that looked like it had packed its bags for the summer only two weekends ago, squandering a rare postseason home ice opportunity after looking odds-on to take third. All that stuff I said about UNH not having big-game mojo, unfortunately applies double to the Huskies. Buuutttt (drum roll please) ...

... earning the gold choke medallion, none other than yoah UMaine Downeast Black Beahs, who after dominating all season at Alfond Arena, somehow came up short twice in a row at home to Providence to drop all the way into the play-in game, where they'll face apparently reinvigorated Les Habitants du Merrimack. And if UMaine does win, guess what ... Providence hosts them in the QF's. Good luck with that one, eh? :p ;)

Funny thing is that IF we allow ourselves to entertain the possibility that UNH can advance past Northeastern (and why not, as it looks like they left their best efforts somewhere in the Gahden during the Beanpot) ... barring any upsets in the play-in round, it looks like the probable #1 vs. #8, #2 vs. #7 AND #3 vs. #6 match-ups could be repeats of this past weekend's games - albeit at different sites.

Promises to be an interesting couple of weeks. Noticed that Downing got a game misconduct, so I'm assuming he will be missing at least the first game of the QF's. Any insight into what transpired to earn him the gate? Boarding or something??

Game misconducts are not auto suspensions...unless he got a DQ or has a few GM's on the year

Grayson Downing got a two minute minor and 10 minute misconduct. He didn't even get the gate for the game. He'll be on the ice when the Wildcats open against NU.

UNH was getting good offensive zone time on a PP. Puck came to Downing out front and he was trying to put it in. puck seemed to end up in the feet of a MC Dman and Downing in fighting to get the puck knocked the guy down and the refs called a penalty. Downing and the UNH bench seemed pretty upset about the call and from what I saw it seemed that the ref gave him the misconduct for something he said skating on his way to the box.

Grayson Downing got a two minute minor and 10 minute misconduct. He didn't even get the gate for the game. He'll be on the ice when the Wildcats open against NU.

The Skating Mother Teresa's coughed up first place in fewest penalty minutes on the season to AIC last night.

But, but important, UNH now has the opportunity to flip NU for their 14th in the almighty PWR, from where they sit in tie for 20th with Ohio State.

Goumas now tied with Bentley's Gensler for 4th in points, similar to where both players were two years ago; possibly Hobey nominations coming their way?

Agree that Maine choked big time last night at Alfond, dropping to 23rd in PWR.

If UNH can win first two against NU, perhaps they can squeak into the 15th NCAA slot even without a win at the Garden; would need other conference tourneys to break their way with the front runners holding onto their leads keeping out auto seed interlopers.

Anyway, get a win tonight and move on. Who wudda thunk BU would take one from NU. Oh wait, I did;) Lesson? Anything can happen moving forward. HE is tough top to bottom that's for sure.

WUDDA, CUDDA, SHUDDA and UNH , PC and BU DIDDA:)

My UNH "You Da Man" award for last night's game goes to Casey DeSmith for stopping 49 of 51 Mc shots. Congratulations Casey for winning this pretigeous award. DeSmith is Da Man for winning this the first UNH "You Da Man" award:)

I too wanna echo the sentiment to dropkicknh...that post gave the newbie me a much needed perspective into what hockey can be like...(as do all of these great posts by you hockey phenoms!) Giving BU the "we're not worthy" salute (Wayne's World) this morning...good for them! Glad we are NOT going to Orono next weekend..that will be an interesting match up...

Re: UNH Wildcats 2013-14 Season Thread (Part 2)

UNH owes BU a big thank you after their sweep of NU. Did not see that coming.

They also owe BU a big thank you for laying down like cheap whores during that Monday afternoon make up game Those were a couple of big points.

Re: UNH Wildcats 2013-14 Season Thread (Part 2)

Okay, we are all giddy after the improbable clinching of home ice. I doubt anyone had the scenario where one win vs. Merrimack while NU and Maine lost twice would be all that was needed. And the prospect of playing NU, a team that they beat twice this year, at home makes it even more enticing to think that UNH could actually make the Garden. But let me be the first to throw some cold water on this. Despite the victory last night, UNH again was gawd awful. They gave up 51 shots to the worst team in the league and only won because DeSmith was beyond solid in the net. Frankly, UNH didn't look any better defensively last night than they did the night before. Only difference is that they got a couple of more pucks past the Merrimack goalie. So now they have two more weeks to prepare (they will have played two games in 25 days when they finally take the ice again on March 14). Is preparation time going to be any more productive leading up to NU than it was in the two weeks leading up to Merrimack? I hope so.

Thanks Debbie Downer. Enjoy the win and the home ice clinching. I mean it hasn't even been 24 hours.

I totally agree with the tenor of your post Greg. I will also point out however, that sometimes it is better to be lucky than be good. This team has gotten a number of breaks during the past three weeks, beginning with the postponement of the BU game, through the NU and ME chokes of this weekend. Even the draw of NU as first round opponent is a break.

Re: UNH Wildcats 2013-14 Season Thread (Part 2)

If you were a number one seed, and you had a choice for your opponent, the following week who would you pick..Uvm, NU, Maine, ND...UNH has caught the greatest brake since yesterdays game..lets see if they can surprise us.

I definitely agree that I rather play NU than the other teams. But it's also tough to beat a good team 3 or 4 times in a row in a season (Lowell last year). And I would imagine NU is going to be pretty ****ed off by being swept by BU that they will come out flying. Hopefully UNH will as well.
