Agreed. NU #4 vs. # 5 UNH wouldn't be bad either. Matthews is a great arena.

Agreed. All three UNH shut outs have been on the road this season, including Matthews. Lake Whitt is no longer our friend.

Fair points. And I do love taking it to them in that rickety old bandbox!

A bandbox that has a heckuva lot more intensity than our beloved Whittemorgue these days!

Re: UNH Wildcats 2013-14 Season Thread (Part 2)

So, with the Cats idle, whatta we want from other games in Hockey East this weekend? I am thinking a win and a tie by the Black Bears over the Huskies at Matthews. This way, even if the Huskies sweep the Terriers next weekend, UNH can bump them from fourth by sweeping the Warriors, as UNH would hold the tie-breaker. Then, if the Black Bears were to get swept by the Friars the final weekend, the Cats could climb to third.

I wouldn't hold your breath on that one.

I couldn't care less about the difference between finishing 3rd or 4th. Either would give UNH QF home ice, likely against one out of the three other teams in the "second tier" (UMaine/Northeastern/Providence), with an ever-so-slight chance that a Merrimack or BU might pull a play-in upset in the #6 vs. #11 game. Assuming UNH gets past the QF's, you then face either BC or UMass-Lowell in the semis. So I really don't see a #3 finish - as unlikely a prospect as that would seem to be - being of any real value to get worked up over.

I just want to see UNH playing sound two-way, highly competitive hockey down the stretch and into the postseason. Win your own games, to he11 with the rest. If they get to Boston and the HE semis - mission accomplished, and the rest is a bonus. If they don't get to Boston - it's all over regardless.

Feel the same and I appreciate you guys talking about the 'what if's' so I can figure it out :D Seriously going to Boston is the apex I think and beyond, yes, what a big thrill that would be! I can say that I will be in 'hockey withdrawal' this weekend but that's ok...;) Keep the dialog coming it's helping with the learning curve. Heading to the first Mack game next Friday. Have a great weekend whatever you are up to!

Re: UNH Wildcats 2013-14 Season Thread (Part 2)

I do not disagree that simply getting to the Garden would be a huge achievement, given what the Cats have been through this season. However, given how tight the regular season standings are below BC, sure would rather face Lowell than BC in the semis at the Garden, assuming that all the top seeds survive the quarters. But, of course, first things first. Get everyone healthy the next week, sweep the two games in North Andover, and move on from there. Go Cats!

Vecchione with a goal and an assist tonight. Just wanted to beat Hockydud to it.

UMaine 4 @ Northeastern 4 :)
@ Providence 4 UMass 3

I've got a weird gut feeling that Northeastern is going to win tomorrow night and finish 3rd.

AND I'm going to suggest #6 will be decided between Providence @ UMaine next weekend.

UNH @ UMaine in a best of three QF. You read it here first. :D

Agree NU beats ME tonight!

But I've got: #6 PC @ #3 UNH in the QF

#5 ME @ #4 NU in the QF

UNH and NU advance to the Garden!:D

Re: UNH Wildcats 2013-14 Season Thread (Part 2)

I, too, am thinking #4 UNH entertaining #5 Maine for five games at Lake Whitt this season.

Problem is ... if NU beats UMaine tonight, then they're two points clear of UNH AND have a home-and-home on the final weekend against a nosediving BU team which will have almost nothing to play for - except play-in round seeding (a likely road loss to ND).

Somehow UNH would have to do at least 2 points better than NU AND then hope homestanding UMaine doesn't sweep PC.

So I don't see a #3 finish for UNH. :( Too many things need to go *just* right for that to happen.

And I suspect a less than 4 point weekend for UNH at North Andover next weekend sends them to Orono.

Hoping for a strong UMass performance tonight to really put the pressure on PC going into next weekend ...

If somehow BU could win one game against NU and UNH is able to win both against Merrimack they would both finish with 24 points. UNH has the tie breaker.
Then if PC and ME were to split next weekend that would put UNH in third.

As you said, UNH needs things to go just right. Not unrealistic though they could finish in third. Crazy as that seems.

yes but UNH has a propensity to lose when the stage is big.Rarely do they meet our expectations especially this year, dont forget their basically a 500 team.

I know! I've got BU pullin' one outta their arse and taking one from NU. UNH and NU finish with 24 and UNH wins the tie-breaker. I realize it's a long shot but it's the only upset I've got moving forward. There's gotta be one somewhere;):D

Re: UNH Wildcats 2013-14 Season Thread (Part 2)

First, I don't know why everyone thinks it would be so unusual for BU to take a point or two from NU next weekend, especially at home, with the re-scheduled Parker ceremony. That is part of the reason why the (wimpy) decision to postpone the game last week was such a huge break for UNH.

What is more important is that, if I have done my math right, things are really quite simple - If ME wins tonight, all UNH needs to do is win its two games next week against the LAST PLACE TEAM IN THE LEAGUE to earn home ice. Then you don't have to be concerned what happens in any other games. Unless you want to get all anal about seeding, which seems like a waste of time and energy to me.

Bigger point, UNH fans should be rooting for the Bears tonight.

Felger, if your scenario gets UNH QF home ice, that works for me:) And ya I think BU can take one from NU.
