To be fair, wasn't it for public urination or something like that, as they were both trapped in an elevator or something at the team hotel? As far as I know they were (are?) friends and they were hanging out. I don't remember hearing about a dust up but they were both arrested (?)

Another Wildcat Country Insider! (could do without the Gulf Elec plugs but whatcha gonna do!) Let's go 'Cattttssss!!!! Being Italian myself I got a kick of Coach U's "one week you're drinking the wine, the next, you're crushing the grapes" :) Make us an offer we can't refuse...:D Sure to be an emotional night with it being Senior night...and tomorrow night at BU with Jack Parker's jersey retirement. Let's just take care of business boys!!! ;)

Thanks for correcting my memory, WildShawn. I also got the year wrong, as it was December 2007. Post-season spring 2008 was probably my most depressing ever, what with the 3 OT 5-4 loss to BC after leading 4-1 at the Garden, then the debacle against Notre Dame in Colorado Springs.

if they were to run the table. 4 straight, highly unlikely, they would probably be a 5 seed....would get the first game bye and hit the road , where if they win the series' my hunch is they would move up drastically in the power..but these are gigantic what if's. Remember UNH is a 500 team

Problem is, we're (generally) .900 vs. lesser teams, .100 vs. better teams. Not being a pessimist, just a realist.

If they run the table they will have home ice in all likelihood, given the other schedules

Truly hope I'm proven wrong, but I figure any faint glimmer of hope for UNH home ice will be extinguished by the end of this weekend. :(

We could both be correct. I was merely pointing out that were they to win out, given that the other contenders play each other, they would probably get home ice. But I certainly see your point, since they are 2-2 in their last 4, 3-3 in their last 6, 5-5 in their last 10, 10-10 in their last 20, well you get where I'm going.

I've been trying to come up with a realistic scenario where UNH and ME finish 4-5...would love to see that as a first round match up for a change...been 16 years.....not much else to look forward to this season

Yup. This is a dyed-in-the-wool .500 team, no doubt about it. I'd be surprised if this wasn't another .500 weekend.

Okay. There's one and counting.....DeSmith stood on his head!

some teams can get away with a few injuries, ya gotta think not having tvr makes a big difference..granted they are a 500 team , but I think in the last 6-8 games unh giving up way to many shots.

Yeah be a homer! Loved De Smiths game tonight on to BU for round two. Loved the Senior night and the skate around at the end. Proudly wore my pink hat! Let's Go 'Cats!

Re: UNH Wildcats 2013-14 Season Thread (Part 2)

Call me a homer but I'll be surprised if they DON'T sweep the weekend!
They WILL NOT sweep if they play like they played tonight. Ugly win, yah I'll take the 2 points, but without some key saves by DeSmith this game could have ended in disaster.

Agreed. All that matters at the end of the night is the 'Cats found a way to win. It was not pretty - especially at the end, holding on for dear life, against a team at the bottom of the league which is still looking for their first road win - but a win is a win is a win, and style points mean zippo, zilch, nada in comparison to 2 points in the race for HE GF home ice - or at least avoiding the play-in round. And yes - the game was another perfect example of the importance of playing with a lead trumping any SOG data. :D

But they are going to have to play MUCH better tomorrow night down at Agganis, let's not kid ourselves. It will be Coach Parker's big night in "The House that Jack Built", and I'm sure his former recruits will want to honor his presence with a strong performance. If the game tomorrow night continues in the same way the last two periods were played tonight, it could be a long night for UNH, unless they find a way to get off to another multi-goal lead early on. And for intangibles ... let's just say that BU suffers nowadays from not having Coach Parker behind the bench, if for no other reason than they simply do not get the balance of the officiating calls they used to. So with Papa Jack in the house tomorrow night, the officials may suffer a severe case of "muscle memory" in favor of his former team. I'm hoping that NO ONE on the bus ride down to Agganis tomorrow is under any illusions about what they're likely going to be up against.

My measure of what constitutes a successful 2013/2014 season for UNH

Very simply, for this season to be deemed a success, I truly believe the one threshold goal is for this team to advance to Boston for the Hockey East semifinals. That's it - that's the "bright line test". Anything more than that is a happy bonus, and anything short of that is a failure. I don't care if they get to the TD Garden, draw BC in the semis, and get rolled 85-1. Success. And likewise, I'll see zero redeeming value in a *valiant* 2-1 QF loss to the likes of UMaine, Providence, Northeastern or UVM, even if the 3rd game ends up going to quadruple OT, where there is some fluky goal or UNH gets undone by a bad call. Failure.

After tonight's results, the good news is that Notre Dame isn't going to overtake UNH, as they can only max out at .500 in the league. Providence is still stuck in neutral, and UVM has another meeting with BC tomorrow, and has two more on the final weekend against the hottest team in the league (UMass Lowell). Northeastern has a tricky road game tomorrow at UMass Amherst, which has "letdown" writtten all over it, after the excitement of last Monday night's Beanpot Finals. And UNH sits alone right now (for now) in 4th place. :)

As far as the NCAA's ... again, to me that's "happy bonus" land. I don't give a rat's behind about PWR, RPI, KRACH, SOG, OMG, ***, Corsi or his equally irrelevant twin brother Corso. Just win what's in front of you, compete like he11 and let nature take its course. If it happens ... great. If it doesn't ... c'est la vie. This is not a D-1 title contender by any stretch of the imagination, and while I'm first on board with the idea that playing regularly in the big games is the only way to have success in those big games ... this team has been in the NCAA's recently, but they haven't been to Boston for the HE Semis for three (3) years now. And that has to change. Now. JMHO.

In the end, I could not get to the Whitt on Friday night, so watched on TV. Saw Knodel block at least a couple of shots, and heard Goucher say that Knodel has the second most blocked shots in Div 1 this season.

Will need another spectacular performance by DeSmith on Saturday night. Go Cats!

Confession time: I spent most of the 3rd period talking to a friend of mine on the concourse so didn't really see the gaffes of the third...thank God for Casey DeSmith's heroics!! Anyway here's the "takeaway" from College Hockey News:

http://blog.collegehockeynews.com/2...eback-attempt-but-falls-4-3-to-unh/#more-4097

Chuck you put a big goal on the table to make it to the semis...you do realize they have to play solid big time hockey to do that, right? :) Which I believe they are capable of..if the things that bog you down during the season don't catch up to you in the end! Hope springs eternal...let's sweep tonight in Jack's house boys!!!!!

ps thought the 'Whitt had decent energy tonight for a change..

10 or so UNH students did a pretty good job of shutting up the traveling BU fans for the most part, of course the score early on probably helped most in that regard. Surprised by the number of empty seats, 6 of the first 7 rows in the corner section of the far end zone were empty and a corner of the student section didn't 'fill in' until mid-late first period. Box score lists it as 5,349.

Knodel let himself down with that penalty in the third imo. Already a man down and he whacks away the dropped stick of a BU player right in front of the ref to give BU their second 5 on 3 of the night, the Terriers then find the back of the net on it and pull within one. Completely foolish penalty that there was no need to take. Have to be smarter tonight.

Did notice the empty seats. Eric has come up big for us all season long...who knows why that stuff happens and can't tonight coz BU has a lot to prove (and nothing to lose) in front of their former coach! It's going to be a great night honoring him but even better to sweep the Terriers!!! Let's Gooo 'Cats!!!
