Re: UNH Wildcats 2013-14 Season Thread (Part 2)

8 tonight Umile speaking to USCHO , lets hope he will tell them this is last year .

Can I ask why the hate? Okay, Umile is not Jerry York, but who is? If you were a Maine fan, would you have been after Tim Whitehead's scalp, or after Jack Parker's at BU? Or would you prefer Miami's Blasi, who coached his team to irrelevancy this year?I have criticisms of Umile just like everybody else. But the guy has more success in his 24 years than 90% of the coaches in college hockey. And he is not retiring anytime soon, you get that don't you? Why you just sit back for now, relax a little bit, and just enjoy the fact that your team still has a decent chance to win the Hockey East championship, something they haven't done in 11 years and, if they do, will get another bid to the NCAA.

Little side note: With Sorkin getting 4 points on sunday night that puts him with 97 points on his career. It would be nice to see him get to 100 after watching him suffer skating throw a broken hand for a large portion of last season.

Wow that is so nice to know! I somehow met his mom in the ladies room Sunday (she had one of those cool pink jerseys season fully signed by the team) and we got to talking (I do a lot of this haha) and she told me she was "number 21's Mother" which led to talking about Nick etc.

She spoke of his aspirations to win that day given last season with the broken hand...I wished her luck and am so glad things worked out the way they did! Good luck Nick it's been a great season!

Speaking of points read today that Kevin Goumas is actually tied with Dick Umile for all time UNh scoring in 30th place...Good luck Kevin :) !!

Awesome 65:) We are in seats 1,2,3,4. I will be there with my wife and two friends. He's a UNH Grad School alum (Whittemore School) and she's a BU alum:eek: Glad we don't have to split loyalties or cheering prowess;)

That's the Loge section? We will be right across (sort of) in Loge 20 Row 13 seats 1,2,3. Still think we all oughta meet up for a beverage of sorts prior to the game at one of the Garden venues as mentioned ;) At any rate will make the effort to get over there anyway as lots of UNH peeps I've met throughout the season are going to sit over there.

Agree we all should meet up somewhere before the UNH game. I know where UNH82 is talking about where they do the NESN stuff behind one of the goals in the loge area. You will see them during the game. So I'm good with that. I know I'll be thirsty by then. Capice?:D

Gotta agree with Greg 82. Just enjoy the ride. Umile is a quality coach and he bleeds blue. He's from my era so I saw him as a player too. Awesome competitor and took no prisoners. IMO the players love him and want to win for him. What more could you ask for?

I just don't see it happening that way. I don't know him personally, but for a coach such as Umile, who has been with a school as long as he has, and to have had the success he has had over the years (granted, never achieving the ultimate goal we all have wanted) and retire after the next loss without the fanfare that I would expect be accorded to someone with similar credentials, well, I don't see it happening. (Sorry for the run-on sentence.)

When the time comes, I would expect an announcement that would suggest he'll coach one more year. Like him or not, think he's the right man, right now or not, you have to remember that he built this program out of the doldrums/wreckage of the early '80's to its peak in the late '90's and for a few years after. His last game at UNH should be recognized when it happens.

I could be way off on this, and of course, there are always extenuating circumstances (read: life, and its sometimes cruel vagaries) that could effect a change sooner, but I don't think what you suggest is part of the plan.

Anybody got any of that Kool-Aid that has been mentioned from time to time? I'll drink it (as long as it doesn't come with a bitter aftertaste sometime around midnight on Friday.)

Otherwise, beer is good, and the better, the better.

I wasn't a hundred percent serious , but I do feel he lacks the ability to properly convey certain messages . He might be a great X and O man but truly lacks in articulating and motivating his troops . Does he think each week his team will put in 110% effort without motivational Bill Belichick speeches ? Does he deliver the right tone or does he take for granted his teams will be up for the contest ? Even professional athletes need to be whipped into shape each week . Just because the stakes are high doesn't mean each player is ready, after all your dealing with kids here . How many press briefings has he given where he states " team came out flat tonight " . Providence coach Leaman always has his team ready for battle as in hunting pucks ( how about 3-3 in trips to Boston ) This would be my only gripe against Umile and of course I could be completely wrong .

How about winning the **** thing. Sure, he brought the program back into the national picture but it has resulted in no championships in 20 whatever years at the helm. There were other factors that played into UNH's comeback including the building of the Whitt and many feel McCloskey's recruiting ability. The team has not achieved anything noteworthy in 10 years. Great, he's loyal to UNH. I would be too if I made around $250K producing no notable results other than 2 HE championships over 10 years ago. He's a solid coach but at this point I doubt UNH will ever win a title under him. For the record I hope I'm wrong.

Re: UNH Wildcats 2013-14 Season Thread (Part 2)

Soooo not trying to start anything (honest!) but I got a text today from someone with a quote from the NU coaching staff about not being happy about the fish throw, then the hat throw (Goumas hattie)...that it's a penalty to throw anything on the ice...if that's true then I'd say we're long overdue for a penalty with just the fish throw! Thoughts? And please, I'm not looking to get into a UNH v NU thing here. ;) Maybe next time I'll keep my hat on my head...or...maybe not. :p

Actually, great point there. The fish throw should be the warning not to throw anything on the ice and the next time it happens, it should be a penalty.

Here is the rulebook

67.3 Interference by Spectators - In the event that objects that interfere with the progress of the game are thrown onto the ice, the official shall blow the whistle and stop the play; and the puck shall be faced off at the spot where play is stopped.
Fans are not permitted to throw objects on the ice. At the discretion of the referee, a warning may be issued before the game.
Spectators are not permitted to use artificial noisemakers, air horns or electronic amplifiers while the game is in progress.
The band(s) shall not be allowed to play while the game is in progress.
PENALTIES—Warning or bench minor against offending fans’ team for delay of game.
It is the referee’s discretion, depending on the severity of the action, whether or not a warning is necessary.
Note: Conferences or the proper disciplinary authority are encouraged to develop policies in this area if necessary.
