Re: UNH Wildcats 2013-14 Season Thread (Part 2)

two things, one would think sitting at 17 currently with power of 42 that a win over a lower ranked team would do something for our power, but no.. If we beat PC we are still at 42. No idea why and doesn't make sense. However I do no we have blown our chances numerous times with our less than stellar performance. Just one win against Union or Vermont, not to mention other games would have sufficed. Which brings me to Saturdays game, two goal lead a win and we are at 15 [maybe even 14] in the power and with one win in Boston on Friday would have solidified our NCAA birth. Unfortunately now we have to run the table . Can UNH win three games in a row, hmmmmmm

When you have UNH win Saturday and Sunday (So they win all three games b/c you can't take games away) UNH is still at 17. How did you come up with the 14th or 15th spot if they won Friday and Saturday? And you're right with the blown opportunities throughout the season. A couple key wins here and there throughout the season would make a big difference.

Regardless I think most would agree that making the tournament was not really expected of this team. And there was and still is an outside chance. I agree with wildcatdc, just look at this current situation as glass half full. Can't dwell on the past and for an average team at least they're making things exciting at this point in the season. Just enjoy the garden. No high expectations for UNH (at least from me, I'm not speaking for you) so no matter what happens it's a win-win. It's certainly good experience for the underclassmen.

And that PC fan brings up an interesting point. If a lot of PC fans don't show up because of the basketball game I wonder what the attendance will look like. Since ND probably also wont have a big crowd come out from Indiana. There are certainly Notre Dame alumni/fans who live in the Boston area that will go to the game but probably not the same amount as if another local school was playing in the semis. I guess UNH fans will just have to fill the place.......

Re: UNH Wildcats 2013-14 Season Thread (Part 2)

Okay, so I had a little time on my hands and just nerded out on the PWR Predictor. Ran multiple permutations of us NOT winning the HEA tournament (losing to Lowell), and in no situation were we higher than 17th. While admittedly not exhaustive, I am pretty much thinking our only NCAA hope is to get the auto-bid with a tourney championship. That would be pretty sweet.

Maybe a little like winning the musket to squeak into the FCS playoffs and make it all the way to the semis?

I think that if we win two, our PWR will be good enough for an at-large, so the auto-seed would be redundant.

Will call UNH ticket office later this morning and enquire about a couple of tickets in loge section 13.

Then, I will consult my special agents to identify the best meeting place between games.

UNH alum office sent an email yesterday about pre-game pahty outside da Gahden, but I would rather watch the first game and get blinded again by golden helmets (oops, the word 'legendary' comes up again in this thread.

"The UNH Alumni Association invites you to gather at our UNH Fan Headquarters from 5:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. at the legendary The Fours Restaurant and Sports Bar on 166 Canal Street, just steps from the Boston Garden. Recognized by Sports Illustrated as the Best Sports Bar in America, it has become a UNH Hockey East Playoff pregame gathering spot for years. Socialize with UNH alumni, parents, and friends before the UNH Wildcats take on the Providence College Friars at 8 p.m."

Yup. Exactly why I wasted an hour trying to see a way for us to make it in absent a tourney win. :)

Two wins generally lands us between 13-15, assuming that UML is our opponent, which makes the auto-bid repetitively redundantly redundant. Didn't have the energy to run ND as the opponent.

Ryan 422...i ran the numbers on the simulator, Fri, sat, wins coupled with other teams losing had unh at 15...my point also is unh has to much talent in my opinion to have 17 loses. After all they do have 21 wins. As we have elaborated before over the last 6 weeks regarding their lack of focus and eagerness. What about all the rants about our coach? Just look at all the teams that are making the tournament, we are just as good. I cant tell you how frustrating it was watching them lose a third period lead and lose the game, Maine game comes to mind.

Ah yes...that Maine game! Sigh. Well as I was told early in Oct by someone very close to the team "It's gonna be a long season lets see where we end up" and here we are; heading to the HE Semis! Did you know the 'Cats NEVER trailed the entire weekend until the OT goal? (NU)
The 'Cats dug deep and found a way to win which is huge in itself. How different this board would look if they had not... I include myself here not pointing fingers :)
To me that's the victory of all the frustrations of the season; they found a way to win! Losing TvR was HUGE and that cannot be denied but it paved the way for Brett to show his stuff; Maller and Cleland came along (we are going to only benefit from thIs next year ). I could go on...

I always hear the phrase "and that's why we play these games" the lessons learned in wins and losses. None of us in this board know the true dynamics of this team; but we do know one thing they found a way to move on didn't they! :). I too lament some of the would'ves and could'ves and should'ves so I hear that. Still... here we are and who's to say where we end up? I mean it's probably a stretch to compare this team to the Yale experience of last year but ya never know...

So to end this rambling message Friday can't come soon enough! I hope the team does the best they can and I look so forward to meeting you all at the game!

Bring it 'Cats!!

With a win Friday against PC (drop the puck for a reason) who would you guys prefer our Wildcats to play on Saturday for better chances of making the dance? Irish or Riverhawks?

Re: UNH Wildcats 2013-14 Season Thread (Part 2)

Just got tickets for me and my girlfriend (she understands icing, interference, etc), right next to e.cat in section 13, row 10, I think. We will figure out a gathering place, but if we don't, you know where to find us. :-)

I'd like to see a UNH-Lowell final. Then maybe UNH can get some redemption for last year. And as unh1982 said just playing the odds I would take Lowell. Beating a hot and confident ND team (who've only lost twice since their trip to Durham) UNH already beat twice this season or Lowell who swept UNH this year. I would hope UNH wouldn't lose three out of three to Lowell.

Awesome 65:) We are in seats 1,2,3,4. I will be there with my wife and two friends. He's a UNH Grad School alum (Whittemore School) and she's a BU alum:eek: Glad we don't have to split loyalties or cheering prowess;)

OK ... so I'd rather see UNH playing Notre Dame only because I continue to sincerely believe they are an overrated team that caught BC at just the right time (that's my story and I'm sticking to it). I think there is a reason UNH swept ND and likewise a reason why they got swept by UMass Lowell. Some teams just match up better with others. I think UNH just plays better in a wide-open game, and they're more likely to get that game against ND. UNH struggles to create offense sometimes against a defensive-minded opponent, and that fits UML late last season and earlier this season.

But here are my problems, and they are two-fold:

(1) I just don't see UNH getting past Providence in the semis. BIG problem;
(2) I can't possibly bring myself to root for Notre Dame against ANYONE. Let's just say last weekend was a challenge for me, and I'm sure many of you know just how much I *love* all things BC. So I could not even enjoy watching BC get bounced in the #1 vs. #8 upset. Welcome to my world. :( I have a grudging admiration for UMass Lowell, so while who I root for is hardly going to have an impact on who actually wins and who loses ( shocking, eh?), I am going to be rooting nearly as hard for UML to beat Notre Dame as I will be rooting for UNH to pull the upset over Providence.

* The old thinking was ABBC (Anyone But Boston College)

* The revised thinking here is ABBCAND (self explanatory)

If UNH can somehow make it to the Finals, AND they beat Notre Dame for the HE Trophy, I can die a happy man. :)
