Lets go back to renaming this game goalie. Gillies was hot in net, tough to beat. Way to stick it out and grind out a point against a team certainly on the rise. I just hope the NHL takes notice and he leaves for the pros sooner rather than later. I thought the Cats played well overall today, especially with the extra days off. Sundays at the Whitt are real difficult for some reason over the years, and one where the snow impact hit even harder. Big weeks ahead, and they are full of bus rides. Cats don't return to Lake Whitt until March, hopefully the standings are somewhat similar.

They don't look at at the rankings or care about them? Doubtful, they were ranked #1 in early December and have slid downhill ever since. Pressure has never been UNH's friend.

Gillies should be at PC for 1 more year. I don't believe Gillies was all that hot, he was just allowed to see almost all the shots that came his way. Hardly was there a player down in front of the net. They were so willing to be there in the first half of the year, but not so much now. UNH needs to be concerned, and needs to get back to what they did well in the first half. The team defense has been mediocre at best for most of the second half. Last week Merrimack's Bates scored on the same blown coverage twice. If it wasn't for a few errant PC passes the story tonight would have been the same. It is all the little things that are adding up, and not in a positive for this team. The Willows-Camper-Thrush line, should have been sat on the bench for the 2nd and third. Unfortunately for Thrush he was stuck with 2 players who would have been better riding the pine all night. Particularly Willows who should not have been on the ice in the final 5 minutes. Maybe this is a bit of a harsh review, but as of right now if, I was an opponent I would be thinking this UNH squad is soft and doesn't want to get its hands dirty. Hopefully this all passes and this post can be deemed wrong at the end of the year.

First UNH game that I have seen in person since Dartmouth over the holidays, and I was not at all impressed by the Cats play on Sunday, especially compared to the games that I saw them play against UML and BU last semester. How UNH could not score a goal or two in first 2-3 minutes of the game from right in front of Gillies was beyond me. For the rest of the first period, despite UNH dominating puck possession they could only muster feeble shots that Gillies smothered easily, leading to face offs in the zone that UNH lost again and again. I think that PC outplayed UNH in the second and third periods, getting much better quality shots on net than did UNH. None of the UNH players seemed to have the fortitude to set up anywhere near the PC net. During the OT when UNH did get control of the puck, they could not have been more spread out in the four corners of the PC zone, so not surprising that they only notched one shot in the extra frame. The UNH PK that was so effective the first part of the season has apparently caught up with them (33% PK in this one), so 3 goals is not going to cut it the rest of the way, even against the likes of UVM, UMass, and Maine. Home ice for the Hockey East first round does not look like a sure thing at all unless their play improves.

I totally agree with the point of no one sticking to the front of the net. As for the PK, I tend to lean toward the law of averages catching up to them. The other thing with the PK is that on both the goals it looked like they had gotten caught in a diamond formation from their usual pressure box setup they have used all season. Maybe it is a new wrinkle, or they just got caught out of position. And I re-watched the game on the DVR, while doing some work, and realized that really the Thrush-Camper-Willows line only had Willows playing poorly, and the reason I say that is it seemed to start when his stick broke on that pass on the break out at the end of the second. So, I do retract that the whole line played bad, but he did have a poor third period and it was a lasting impression from watching it live. The team really needs to just get back to those little things of blocking a ton of shots like in the first half and going hard to the net and staying there when they actually setup. The team is capable, so there should be optimism. Really do need to strap in for some tough match ups coming up, and hopefully it starts at PC this week.

Home ice is in the HE playoffs is quickly becoming doubtful for the 'Cats if they can't figure out a way to win a game. I can't even remember when UNH didn't win at least one game in the regular season against PC. Sigh.......
Nice thought....too bad Gillies had to steal yet another game tonight.

First time since 1998-1999 season, at least. UNH has not played PC in the HE tourney since 2006-07, which UNH won in two games for second year in a row at home. Perhaps this year UNH will be playing PC in the HE first round at Schneider; for joy.

UNH has a 4-5-1 record for the second half in which they've only scored 24 goals. 11 of those goals came in two games in which their record is 1-1. I don't think running into a hot goalie is their problem. I Agree on the home ice issue.
It is not looking good. On the plus side, if they drop to a #4 seed for NCAAs BC will not be in their regional.

Keep in mind that UNH plays 7, 8 and 9 in the Hockey East standings after this weekend. I thought UNH has played well at times, but has been snake bitten.

that's if BC holds on to a #1 . With 2 with red hot MC, 2 with PC, one with UML and a huge one sunday with you guys as our next 6 games, nothing is sewed up for BC at this point

Obviously not a good two games for the 'Cats, who now sit in a tie for 2nd in HEA with Merrimack at 24 pts and BC in first with 25, but both teams have a game in hand. Perhaps even worse is Providence now sits one point behind in 4th with 23 points and BU looms large in 5th with 21 pts and two games in hand.
Crucial stretch for UNH coming up. Don't expect much out of them at Conte on Sunday as this is the time of the year BC starts rolling post-Beanpot. As noted by CollegeHockeyRinkReport, the 'Cats finish the season at UVM for two, and then four games at the Whitt with UMASS and Maine. Still a lot of hockey to be played between now and the HE playoffs, but UNH needs to snap out of this funk in a hurry. Squeezing at least a point out on Sunday would be a good start.

Thanks so much for bringing some LOGIC to this thread...UNH is a sub-.500 team since the break, and more importantly to me has been substandard since the Colorado trip. That is obvious. But given the Hockey East schedule the rest of the way I see few REALISTIC chances of the Cats dropping out of the top four. (Doesnt mean good things in the postseason, but I still see them at home for round one.) Seven of the eight UNH losses have come against TUCs and I don't see any of them on the schedule after Sunday. To drop from the top four either BU or UML, teams which still play each other twice and teams which UNH owns the tie breaker against, would have to pass them. UNH lost the season series to PC (which still has MC, Bc and UML on its schedule) and still leads the Friars in the standings, albeit by just a point. For all their recent struggles the 'Cats are still closer to first place than to fifth place.
The math seems to work in UNH's favor. But hey, as Dave Hendrickson, Tim Benedetto and John Gravallese demonstrated over the past few days, math is not a strong suit of the Hockey East hierarchy.

Oops, I should have written that UNH had not gone a regular season series without beating PC at least once since BEFORE 1998-99, the oldest record that I could find.
