Re: UNH Wildcats 2012-2013 Season Thread

It's great to start out the year with a win. The defense is playing defense, and there's been two separate 5 goal matches (albeit an exhibition). I'm glad the 2nd period happened in the second, and not the third. Let's hope the back 3 go just as well for us.

2 big out of conference wins, nice start to the season. Balanced scoring attack, 3 pretty good lines. Good to see Quast get some time on D last night, with Gadreault and Macdonald getting some shifts on the 4th line tonight.

Re: UNH Wildcats 2012-2013 Season Thread

Couple quick odd items for UNH that I noted:

1) All 9 goals for UNH were scored from below the circles, at the crease, in the dirty areas.

2) UNH had at least 1 man in front of the net on all power plays

Both very un-UNH like in recent years

Congrats to the Cats for their weekend. Looking forward to my first visit of the season to Lake Whitt next Saturday.

Thinking this weekend will prove pretty important in months ahead... Thanks SCSU. Now go back to the WCHA and win.

Nice start to the season for the Cats, Speelman and TVR impressed. DeSmith looked pretty solid in net as well. Going 2 for 10 on the power and 1 for 10 on the kill are both respectable. Certainly can't get too excited about these wins, because who knows how good St.Cloud is, but its the best start we could have asked for!

Re: UNH Wildcats 2012-2013 Season Thread

Mention should be made on this thread of the passing of Chris Serino. Serino was assistant coach at UNH for most of the'90's and was integral in recruiting many of thequality players that dotted the UNH roster during the late '90's and early 2000's (Darren Haydar for one). He came to UNH at the behest of Coach Umile, who was friends with Serino going back to their high school glory days when they grew up in the adjoining towns of Melrose and Saugus. I can attest as an eyewitness to their high school exploits that they were both very talented athletes. Below is a excerpt from today's Boston Herald article on Serino:

Longtime New Hampshire coach Dick Umile was friends with Serino dating to their own playing days. When Umile got the UNH job, he went on a recruiting trip to Northfield Mount Hermon to try to entice South Boston skater Scott Malone to Durham and wound up bringing both Malone and Serino, then the Northfield Mount Hermon coach, into the Wildcats fold.
“He was always a great friend of mine and was one of the great athletes during my era,’’ Umile said about the Saugus native. “He was a three-sport captain at AIC and probably the best baseball player around when I was in high school.’’
“It’s sad what he went through. He was a wonderful, wonderful person, and people don’t know how much he did for them. He was always very loyal to me.”

Chris Serino RIP

So are we supposed to "Blue Out the Whit" on Saturday or has UNH given up on Jack remembering to tell the boys to pack white?

Don’t forget that Saturday’s game is a Blue Out! Wear your away jerseys and blue UNH gear! #BlueOutTheWhitt #UNHHockey #UNH

Re: UNH Wildcats 2012-2013 Season Thread

In addition to his role with the hockey team, Serino was also head coach of the baseball team at UNH for 3 years and led them to a school-record 26 victories in 1995.

The turn around of the 1990's under the team of Umile (1990- ), McCloskey (1993-1997, 1999-2002), and Serino (1991-1998) is really quite extraordinary - they hadn't made the NCAAs since 1983 and make appearances in '92, '94, '95, '97, & '98 including a Frozen Four in the last one; hadn't won a Regular Season title since 1974 (ECAC) and win it in '92 & '97 (latter shared with BU).

Oh, and nice to hear the pep band take the goal song in the third period against SCSU Friday night and the whole game Saturday, hopefully something that is here to stay.

Re: UNH Wildcats 2012-2013 Season Thread

Quick-hit thoughts --

- Going to be a really tough game against BU. I'd love to see the 'Cats get the W - but it will require a really solid game for 60 minutes. No periods like the second periods last weekend.

- It was nice to see MacDonald and Gaudreault in the line up last weekend. It'll be tough for Umile to work in everyone, but its always fun to watch a Freshman grow. Gaudreault had some real bright spots with the puck.

- Pesce's hands are great. Makes great tape to tape passes, and while he might not be the strongest body, he makes up for with his stick work.

- I was surprised Wyer didn't get a start last weekend.

And foot work. He stopped a couple of rushes by tying everything up with his stick and getting the puck with a skate. Then a smooth transition to his one stick. It was a couple times over the weekend. Looks to have a bug frame too, so some time in the weight room will help with the strenght. Seemed an impressive freshman.

I wasn't, he didn't look really strong to me in his 30 minutes in the exhibition game, just looked off, rusty. My guess is maybe next weekend against Northeastern or 11/2 vs Umass or 11/10 vs Vermont. UNH wants a fast start to help put last year behind them and it makes me wonder where you work in Wyer's playing time.

My big question against BU: UNH scored 9 goals against SCSU, all down low. Is that a focus for UNH to manufacture goals or was SCSU just really bad down low. The next few game it will be interesting to see if UNH can fight for that space or do the go back to being stuck outside.

AGREE! Play on pep band!

Re: UNH Wildcats 2012-2013 Season Thread

Anyone have any thoughts on availability of tickets at the door on Saturday night? General admission or reserved, either would be ok.

I thought last Friday's SCSU game was a Blue Out game until I realized I was just seeing empty seats.

In all seriousness, that was pretty disappointing for a season opener.

On a positive note, the student section and pep band were great!
