UNH Wildcats 2012-2013 Postseason Thread

Re: UNH Wildcats 2012-2013 Postseason Thread

Wildshawn, no penalty was initially called unless you're saying the refs got together and one of the linesmen spoke up...

Re: UNH Wildcats 2012-2013 Postseason Thread

The video was only used to get the number correct last night.
That's what ESPNU was saying late last night as well -- once the player was clearly head-injured, the refs conferred, and then used the replay to see who to toss. In any event, it happened right in front of a ref, so why the whistle wasn't blown immediately is beyond me. They eventually got the call right. (And I'd say that if the players were reversed, with Goumas getting the gate.)

They've always been hacks.... Anyone remember the game back in like 2000ish when they came into UNH as the #1 team in the country, got thoroughly dominated (in UNH's tournament) and pulled all sorts of cheap crap all game? including shooting the puck intentionally at the bench and other antics... it was hilarious. No surprise about last night.
I had forgotten about that! One of the Denver players was doing the "raise the roof" motion to mock the crowd after he scored and like half the building started doing it back at him when UNH went up on them.

Nice season. 'cats played on the 2nd day of the second to last weekend. Not too shabby.

Welcome everyone to Groundhog Day - The Durham Edition.

Well, it looks like someone is going to win the D-1 title for their first time ever this season. Answer honestly - are you happy that the team overachieved this season, getting back to the NCAA's, winning a game, and eventually losing to a "team of destiny" that looks to be odds-on to at least play for the National title ...

... OR in a season when the traditional national powers have all come up short, are you frustrated that a tremendous opportunity to not only make a return trip to the Frozen Four, but also have an unexpectedly legit shot at the whole enchilada has eluded the UNH program yet again?

OR are you persuaded by the "outside forces got us" theory, where the Goumas/Downing injuries simply proved to be an iincredibly unlucky, insurmountable "bad break".

Yale. St. Could. Union/Quinnipiac. Yup, that's right. Not a BC, Minnesota, UMaine, NoDak etc. anywhere to be seen. No disrespect meant to those other programs, but I do think missing out on this one is gonna leave a mark.

In a few years' time, I think we will find out that neither UML or UNH was a tremendously talented squad laden with NHL talent. But UML's defensive system is SO ingrained in everything they do, it's hard not to be impressed with their coaching. And discipline. They are not taking stupid penalties - very few penalties, actually. Kudos Coach Bazin.

------------------

One last request though. Let's PLEASE not try to leave this on Denver's doorstep. Whatever happened to Downing, I don't think even got a call? And the Goumas hit may have been nasty and illegal (and was properly penalized as such), but the kid who got called was one of their top scorers, whose team was down only by a single goal with most of the 3rd period left to play - not exactly the scenario where your 4th line goon is sent out to deliberately hatchet a key opposing player. I'm not defending the hit, but to try to make it out that it was some nefarious targeted "hit" is a bit much, if you ask me. That's the kind of stuff that has led to the whole "SMT" syndrome. JMHO.

St. Could.
Freudian slip, Chuck? ;)

I'm going with #2. Last night's game could have easily ended in a 0-0 or 1-1 tie, forcing OT, and I actually would have liked UNH's chances if that scenario came to fruition. IF....and only IF....that scenario led to a UNH victory, then I seriously would have loved their chances at the "big prize" in Pittsburgh.

Re: UNH Wildcats 2012-2013 Postseason Thread

I will go with #3. Despite only getting one assist from Goumas and Downing in two periods against DU, having to shake up three of our four lines for another game in less than 24 is not a good recipe for a successful outcome. I think that the Cats played well against PC in the HE quarters and against DU and UML in Manchvegas, especially after sleep walking through the second half of the regular season. I think that UNH should be fine for next season if they can build on their stellar defensive play during the early part of this season. This year's team was the most disciplined in years with one of the lowest penalty minutes per game in Div 1. But, sure would be nice if they could develop a sniper or two.
