UNH Wildcats - 2011 Playoff Quest

Re: UNH Wildcats - 2011 Playoff Quest

Personally I'd like to see Henrion playing with Moses and Goumas next year. Obvious problem is all three of these guys played wing this year, but I see no reason that a guy like Moses couldn't play in the middle. I think Goumas is a kid who is fine in a setup role and happy to crash the net and Henrion is also a guy who can clean up some of the chances that Goumas and Moses are going to create around the net.
I recall that Moses and Henrion played on the same line for at least one season with the Junior Bruins. Does anyone familiar with their junior career remember which one played center?

Re: UNH Wildcats - 2011 Playoff Quest

Moses at center?.....here is Moses himself talking about his "D" play

http://www.collegehockeynews.com/news/2011/03/27_new_hampshire_shows_its_depth.php

I think the Mo-Bo-Go will have good chemistry next year, however I do see scroing to be much more spread across lines...

I read that as moses being self deprecating as he attempts to be complimentary of his linemate. I don't think theres anyone on this board that really thinks Moses is a poor player defensively. Borisenok IS terrific defensively, but he doesn't have to offenisve upside to be a top 6 forward. Unfortunately he might have to be on this team next season if some of the other guys don't pan out, but if he is able to be a 3rd line forward who chips in offensively from time to time and does a great job defensively and on the forecheck game in and game out, then that is the role that allows him to be at his best and ultimately would suit the UNH team the best.

I'm not arguing that Moses is an upgrade defensively over Borisenok, rather that constructing a top 6 with other more gifted offensive players may allow those guys to shine better on the offensive end, and let Borisenok excel in his more natural role

If any UNH fan would like to start an "offseason" thread, please feel free. The conversation has been drifting in that direction.

Re: UNH Wildcats - 2011 Playoff Quest

Zee top end lately ave been JVR, Butler, Thompson, Kessel among udders. I see POTY, All Americans, Hobey candidates et NHL playeurs der, eh? Zee deepth, maybe maybe not - zee depth Krog senior year was not much, zay juste ave a brilliant playmakeur Krog wif a birlliant finisheur Aydar, et Souza kinda too.

Zee probleme is dey stop recruting centres.

Et just cuz you stand at da dot et take face off dont make you a centre.

Play making centers. Silengo is clearly a center (not just because he plays at the dot) but a 3rd or 4th line center.

Also is that recruiting or landing - there is a difference. Not recruiting is not recognizing the problem. Not landing is not working the field in a way that gets you good (if you can't land great) playmakers.

Thanks, Craig P. As I said, "Yikes".

Like your Britney voice description. Superb guitarist Leo Kottke once described his own voice (actually not that bad) as "geese farts on a muggy day".

LOL...Craig P's quote about Britney comes from DHG, AKA darrenhaydarsgurlie, AKA...my daughter Sarah. ;)

Re: UNH Wildcats - 2011 Playoff Quest

My understanding is that they weren't too happy about the fish on Saturday and security was definitely upped tonight. Everybody in my group got patted down on the way in (all UNH students in Jerseys), and I had a bag that was long and skinny (which could have easily fit the usual fish) and they made me completely empty it and interrogated me for a good minute or so about the signs I had in it. I guess the lobster was the biggest thing they could have snuck in, although I would have rather seen a small fish instead.
Very understandable. Nice job to the person who did that.
Apparently what I heard was incorrect, the person who supposedly tosses the fish sent an email to a UNH blog about why a lobster was tossed Sunday instead of the usual fish.

Whatup New Hampshirite??

My names (blank) and I'm one of the fish guys. I was the one that threw the much talked about lobster at the game on Sunday night, and I thought I should offer an explanation. The fish market that usually donates the fish to us was closed on sunday, and as the game approached we were scrambling to find a fish to throw. We literally called 20 different grocery stores and fish markets around both Durham and Manchester to no avail, so we had to go to Hannafords at 630 and grab the next best thing, a lobster. Not our choice, but the best we could do. You should have seen the guys at the Verizon center when they searched our bag and found a lobster...never have i seen so many people be so confused; we had to wait at the entrance for 15 minutes while they made sure we were okay to bring the lobster in, we had a crowd of verizon center management around us and it was hilarious. That is hopefully the last time we throw a lobster, and I guarantee that for the first game next year youll see us at the whit with a big, smelly fish like usual.

staying classy and DEFINITELY not umassy-

Re: UNH Wildcats - 2011 Playoff Quest

Read the last two pages which, as CHC says, should be on an off-season thread. A few observations:
Barry Edgar was a forward, not a defenseman. In '77 they had Langway, Burke, Powers, Harvie, Rando, and Brad Holt. I can remember Edgar playing some defense, but so did Dave Lumley and Bruce Crowder. Charlie always wanted puck moving defensemen and Powers was the prime example. He told me once that he had never played a minute of defense at Melrose High but after a few practices his freshman year Charlie called him in and said he would be on the blue line. He almost quit to go to Merrimack.
Someone mentioned scoring today vs. 10 years ago. Look at scoring nationwide throughout the leagues. The point totals are way down compared to the Krog, Haydar days. In '97 UNH had five 50 point scorers. I think there were two in Hockey East this year (Thompson and Atkinson). That's why Miele's 71 points stuck out and why UNH's clampdown on him (2 shots in the game) was such a shocker.
I don't see Moses as a true center. He has a lot of talent as a puck carrier, not so much as a finisher, never mind someone who dishes the puck. I love Borisenok's tenacious play, but he is what he is. Goumas has tremendous upside, he's got a jump in his skates, knows how to go to space and snap a shot off. I expect big things from him. As for the rest, don't sell Sorkin & Silengo short. They were still learning the game this year, but they showed flashes (Silengo's two up at Maine). They can improve. As for Block & Speelman. They were the last two in two years ago, replacing Dries and Bourque, in June and July. Considering the time frame, they have done more than anyone could have expected. And I agree on Henrion, he needs to be on a line with someone who will dish him the puck. He's got a pro shot, but really didn't have that many opportunities to use it, especially in the last month.
Finally, my opinion is that there are really no juggernauts in college hockey any more. I suppose BC, but teams like North Dakota, Michigan, Notre Dame, etc., they all can be beaten. Does anyone disagree that, if UNH had scored first vs. Notre Dame, they probably would have won the game. There is no doubt in my mind that they would have clamped down on ND just like they did on Miami. They won and lost one goal games (empty netters don't count) and did the same two years ago. For all the gnashing of teeth about Umile, he and his staff know how to compete with what they've got. (at least most of the time. We won't talk about RIT). Times have changed, just have to deal with it.

Re: UNH Wildcats - 2011 Playoff Quest

What has ever happened to Greg Burke? I saw him play his first year in the EJ and I thought he had great skill. His offensive production seemed to be limited by the end of his junior career. I believe I heard injuries. I just expected more from him.

Re: UNH Wildcats - 2011 Playoff Quest

Greg, Gibbons put up 50.

Anyway, point taken about scoring being down in general. I just don't have the same fear in these UNH forwards that I usually do/did. Now, DiGirolamo impressed me in the regionals, so that's pretty encouraging for you guys next year. I suppose many of you think that if they keep knocking at the door, they will make it back the FF eventually...is that accurate? Or do people think a change is necessary? I don't necessarily mean Umile either. Perhaps a philosophy, assistant coaches, etc. I can't put my finger on it, but something just seems to be missing from getting UNH back to that next level.

I don't know if you've seen North Dakota, but they're the best team I've seen this year--a clear step or two above the other teams you mentioned. I also don't think it'd be a given that UNH beats Notre Dame if they score first. I mean ND was down 3-1 the night before and pulled it off.

Re: UNH Wildcats - 2011 Playoff Quest

One other thing, I believe UNH has lost some of the fear that opposing teams had when going into the Whittemore Center. The atmosphere lacks what it was in the late 90s and early 00s. People have always left with about six minutes to go in the game, which irritates me (no matter where or who the venue is). College hockey games end by 9:10 at the latest with the occasional TV game lasting a little longer. Stay the whole game and support your team.

I had my most fun as a Merrimack fan this year that I've had in quite some time and it was mostly because the team was better, but the atmosphere made it so exciting. That is what is so great about college sports and why I have loved college football for so long. It is why I always look forward to going to Maine, UNH, UVM.

I hope the excitement and buzz returns. I've always respected Umile and the program.

Honestly I figured the two teams capable of knock of UND even if UND was having a good day were BC and Denver. CC and 90+ minute against Western took care of that. In single elimination anything can happen, but UND should win this one going away.

I think UNH gets the first goal during thier surge early and they win. I think the surge would have lasted longer without the ND first goal. ND wouldn't have been able to squeeze so much defensively either and UNH would have been able to.

Unfortunately he can't stay on the ice. Once he started getting hurt in Juniors it has been one thing after another. This year out hurt after game 1 comes back for a couple weeks and out with Mono comes back and couple weeks and out hurt again.

Has good talent and it is a bummer he can't stay on the ice. Some of it is just bad luck stuff too.

Hoping he can stay healthy next season, the kid shows alot of upside, when he was in thier this year with Sorkin and Silengo thought they clicked together and had a lot of energy. He could be an X Facor next year and have a break out year if he is healthy.

Hopefully he gets healthy and can return to form for his last two years at UNH. From what I saw when he played on the junior monarchs, he could have been a lot better than just an "x factor." He played on the top line with Jeff Velleca (Merrimack) and Brian Flynn (Maine) and the line was excellent en route to a championship.

Still got 2 years, he was much slimmer this year after the Mono, will be intersting to see how he looks next year. Thought he did skate better slimmer. I do think he will be the surpise break out next year, him and Block. Block might not put up big numbers but will be heard from in other ways next year.

I think he could stll be something special. His development certainly has been stunted by all the missed ice time. At this point I dont think he will ever reach full potential while at UNH. He could have been another Butler/Thompson type after 3 years maybe better after 4. I just don't see him getting all the way there. He just needs to get on the ice and get on an injury lucky streak. How bad a streak can you be on when you get over and injury and end up with mono.

Or, if the Cats had answered with a matching goal within a couple of minutes as they did against Miami, I think that the game could have gone the other way. Incredibly boring game once ND began clogging up the neutral zone. Really looked to me that Thompson's wrist was hurting, as it did not seem that he was getting anything on his passes and shots. Wish that the 2nd line had seen more time on the three PPs.

Overall, I thought that Cats did far better than I expected on the weekend. Second game not as exciting as their game 2 against BU in 2009, but much better than their collapse against RIT last year, not to mention the one and out's in previous years since 2003. I still think that Umile does well with the talent that he has, year in and year out. If the PP is Borek's responsibility (is that right?), then time to make a change there perhaps.

Congrats to Paul Thompson getting an opportunity in the Penquins system; with Sydney Crosby still out, maybe PT will get a game or two in the big show like Bobby Butler did at the end of last season?

Thanks to all of the seniors for leaving it all on the ice once again in the post-season. I cannot ask for anything more from this team.

Holy jesus...if i read the score correctly it was 4-1 RPI at the time of that goal. place was going absolutely wild...you never see a college crowd like that these days.

This is what UNH Hockey means to Coach Umile and the young men who work their butts off entertaining us:

Thank you Captain Mike Sislo, Assistant Captain Matt Campanale, Paul Thompson, Phil DeSimone, Mike Beck, and Greg Manz.

Good stuff. I had to chuckle when people in the Wisconsin thread were making fun of John Muse crying.

Just what do you mean by "pulled it off?" Those were two pretty fluky goals, if you ask me. Merrimack clearly had the better of the play for the majority of the game and deserved to win. If UNH scores first it's a totally different game...ND can't play the "line up at the blue line" and just dump the puck out. They almost didn't even TRY to score once they were up 2-0...the game would have been much more wide open if ND was trailing and would have played right into UNH's hands...

Oh, and I'm sure you just forgot about BU - an indavertent slip, right? :) I mean, the atmosphere is SO exciting at Agganis with the thousands of screaming, non-stop noise-making fans - how can you forget the chills that going to a game there give you??? And it's always so packed...so tough to get a ticket!!
