UNH Offseason Contract Edition.

Oh, of course. Yes, turning 50 is a pretty big deal. So are turning 60 and 70, I think. Trick is knowing when to retire before a NRBRN.

Swing and a miss lol. I'm 62 going on 63 later this year. No NRN's anytime soon.

No worries, it's not that important anyway. 1:):):)

Warren Foegele roofs it!

What a beauty, eh? Not too bad for a guy who couldn't crack the UNH line-up back in the day. Hard not to admire the determination and hard work displayed to overcome early adversity, and use that fuel too get to this point in his career.

In the meantime ... a traveling medical devices salesman, and a retired hockey coach hit the hay early tonight, both contemplating how that kid who hopped the train out of Titletown NH for Ontario more than 8 years ago has now hit the big time, and has found his way to scoring twice as many career NHL playoff goals as the captain/future sales rep did in four years combined at UNH. AND only a game away from getting his name on the Cup ...

Warren has really done a great job making his mark. Still was a shock when he left, but he knew what was best for him and it's paid off. Potsy has not had the same path but he's in
the AHL finals too and hope his team wins it. Such great players...can still see Potsy ripping a slap shot 3 feet from the goal..I mean, for me considering the length of time I've followed the
team 'those were the days'.

Was looking at the roster last night and seeing the amount of Seniors we have who just happen to be dmen was scary. And with the goal tender situation what it is I am really going to
wonder how its going to work out this season. Not to be a pessimist but 'Durham, we have a problem'....

Hope your Summers are going well. I'm hobbling around on a knee that is probably seen better days and trying to put off the TKR as long as humanly possible! Sigh, this getting old stuff...ha!

Good luck with the knee, 'Ref. As far as the defense this coming season, I think it's shaping up as a Whale of a season, although with ESL not coming until season after next, the depth situation behind Fudgie is loaded with question marks. After that ... who knows what's gonna happen. MS7 is gonna have to become a portal master at some point, although to date it seems he has figured out the first string goalie thingie that way two seasons running, but the jury is out on his ability to get other guys into the program from elsewhere. Maybe his thinking is that his ability to sell to new recruits is dependent upon a second straight strong RS showing, and what's out there for this season isn't willing to sit in the stands while the likes of Reid/Jenson/Gagne/Huard/Lindner (and Babbage?) sop up all the notable ice time, along with Fitzie?

It looks and feels like a huge gamble, but obviously he's feeling lucky, and with his noted work ethic, I can see him and his assistants parading all around the world ... nope, North America ... uh, the United States ... hmmm the East Coast ... well, maybe New England ... ahhh, the Route 495 semicircle to capture all of their defensive needs that can't be addressed by shopping for other program's sloppy seconds in the portal. Yowzah!!

This a.m. CHC updated the situation, which is now fixed in place. Rico DiMatteo, a 5th year goalie from Long Island U. will fill the #2 spot next year, and Rafael Gaughan will return as $3

24-25: DiMatteo / Whale / Gaughan
25-26: ELS / Whale /3rd
26-27: ELS / Grout /3rd
27-28: ELS / Grout /3rd
28-29: ELS / Grout /3rd
29-30: Grout / TBD

Too bad MS7 was not able to grab Bentley’s Nick Grabko, who will now play his fifth year in Fairbanks.

Watcher - what drives your theory that ELS will be the #1 ahead of Whale & Grout? Pending his performance in the USHL I would have guessed the opposite?

I doubt that watcher is implying no. 1 vs no. 2 goalie in his list, as he lists DiMatteo ahead of da Whale for this coming season and my guess is that da Whale will get at least 90% of the minutes in net.

What are our expectations for the MacPherson twins and Sadowski 2.0 this coming season?

Is Sadowski coming to UNH this season? Looks like he is still 17 years old. An interview by CHC implies he is headed to West Kelowna(BCHL). However Cedar Rapids has since drafted him in the 3rd round of the USHL draft.

I would expect those MacPherson twins to be immediate impact players. Likely UNH will be better than last season if the goaltending is solid.

Sadowski is not coming this season..next year.

So no one has a comment about Jim Torts returning in some capacity to UNH? Just a rumor at this point to be sure. But can't imagine what role he could have...goalie coach?
Director of Hockey Opps? Friendly advisor?? Spitballing for sure...but would love to see him on the staff in some way.

I hadn't seen anything suggesting this might happen, 'Ref. Frankly, if he's coming back to UNH now, he would (in my mind anyway) be more qualified to be a head coach than an assistant under an inferior HC, but at this stage in his career, he's probably content to continue along as an assistant wherever he may land in D-1. He's exactly the kind of elder statesman/mentor MS7 could have used from the outset, instead of going with the underexperienced group of Souza/Stewart/Guiliano that apparently still persists to this day. I can't imagine he's coming for free, and I don't see "goalie coach" anywhere on his CV, so if it's true, I have to wonder if one of the other two guys is moving on? Or maybe one of those two has been looking for a new opportunity by mutual agreement, and Tortorella has agreed to step in once Stewart or JG finds their new home?

Jim Tortorella - Assistant Coach - Men's Ice Hockey Coaches - Harvard University (gocrimson.com)

All in all, I'm in agreement with you HR, he would be a very good addition, and I can't help but think the advisor community that controls many of the blue-chip recruits out there would consider UNH more favorably, especially with the work Tortorella has put in with defenders who have gone on to 8-figure NHL earnings careers.

I'm still PO'ed with his brother for what he did on the final day of the NHL season, so let's end it here.

Assistant to the AD, as a liaison with fans who post here?

Snives, agree on your goalie thoughts out of Bentley. As for the Mac twins numbers are not impressive for the BCHL. Most of the better players from there play 2 years and always have far better numbers in year 2, no surprise here. So does that mean this year will be a bit slower than we hoped for? I still think they will impress and certainly be great additions. If they can score combined 13+/- goals between them, we could finish with 110-112.
So a 4th or 5th place finish should be achievable if we have good goal tending. With regards to the defense in 25/26 and basically starting over, it has been suggested that perhaps the portal can help address this. Perhaps but unless I am misinformed, this was the last year that players wiould gualifiy for a 5th year. If true, the portal game as we have experienced it, will be vastly different (as in smaller and more limited).

Perhaps the rumors of Jim Tortorella make sense IF MS7 is planning to focus a lot of recruiting on the blue line over the next cycle, as it seems he must? He's got a lot to talk about regarding having developed some NHL level guys who have earned 8 figures in their careers (Adam Fox, Pesce and TvR at least), with two of those guys potentially looking at 9 figure career earnings if they continue to progress and last another decade at that level.

Tortorella returning could be the sneaky best news this program has received in a LONG time ...

Thought I should give my source for the Jim Torts rumor on Twitter (X) North American Hockey Rumors @nahockeyrumors Posted June 7
Can't seem to post all of the original post but this was it:

NCAA Rumor: Jim Torterella to return to the University of New Hampshire staff.

Agree; I'd be thrilled to see him back in the program. Imagine we will find out at the barbeque, or, sooner.

Most likely; good catch.

As mentioned, the MacPherson twins slowed down late in their first BCHL season, but I'm hopeful they can make an immediate impact at UNH. I'd like to see them paired/mixed with some of the proven upperclass forwards to expedite their development and add depth to the attack. Would be huge for the Wildcats if that was not asking too much. Maybe...

Forwards
