UNH Off Season Thread 2011

Re: UNH Off Season Thread 2011

For the UNH Hockey family, some sad news, yesterday as Nancy Holt, the wife of long time UNH Coach Charlie Holt, passed away.....together they were what made UNH Hockey what it is.....a family! So many New Year's breakfasts out at Coach and Nancy's home....Super Bowl parties with the team....Nancy made all of us feel at home then.....condolences to Brenda and Brad, and the family

Although I knew she was in failing health, it still is a shock to hear the news. Charlie and Nancy were two of the most gracious people you would ever want to meet. When I first met them in the mid-70's, they didn't know me and my wife from Adam. All they new was that we were fans of the team and that meant that they were fans of us. Not long before Charlie passed, I spent a wonderful afternoon listening to he and Nancy reminisce about their (and I do mean they, because they were a team) early years at UNH. UNH ran the program on a shoestring back then and one of Nancy's tasks was to clean and stitch the uniforms after every game. Nancy was one of a kind, for sure.

Re: UNH Off Season Thread 2011

I wasn't going to bring up Reid. He was a nice pick up for us. One of our more promising young players.

Saw him a few times with Westside in the BCHL and thought he was terrific. Great size, good skater, nose for the goal. He was great playing alongside Downing on the Westside PP...

Very disappointed when it didn't work out with UNH, I'm sure he'll be playing with a chip on his shoulder. Should be a great college player over the course of his career...

I'll accept your math and info as correct but since I was at UNH, the mid-70's, NH has ranked 50th of 50 states in higher educational funding......either accept the fact that universities, and our countries future, require investment or get out of the business.....and DO NOT give Dartmouth State funding when they have endowments up the yang!

Couldn't agree more, zoofer! Absolutely. Just sharing some figures.

Hey- why doesn't the state start a lottery, you know, so that it can fund education? oh wait.. well at least they have the lottery up and running.

....And you give $h!t......why??

As always, outstanding and thoughtful commentary from the Chestnut Hillbillies!

Why not?

It is hypocritical. His post at the top of the previous page is filled with words and phrases that clearly show he is speculating and has little concrete knowledge of the situation. Then to go rip apart someone else's speculation... it looks ridiculous.

I'm glad you pointed out my thoughtful commentary. Because your post added so freaking much to the conversation.

If you don't like my posts, don't read them. Otherwise, let's be buddies and feel free to go have a drink on me. I'll pick up the tab. May I suggest DrainO?

UNH is in dire financial straights both campus wide and within the athletic department. The state's support of UNH has never been particularly good and with the economy the way it is and Tea Party types now in control in Concord, I don't see things getting better anytime soon.
"Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of a DI National Championship", or something...

There was nothing the Governor could do with enough votes to override his veto and perhaps make cuts even worse. Very short, for the reasons Greg mentions, and long, the state's future is in educating our youth, sighted thinking by the legislature. The athletic department model may soon involve eliminating football or basketball.
Would a drop to DII while playing up in Men's and Women's hockey be a viable option?

I agree, Officer Nick of the USCHO Police. Shameful, I tell you, SHAMEFUL!! :p

And your first post added exactly....what? Fail.

Nah...tell you what though, why don't you just go get me a beer. Thanks Skippy! :p :p

Re: UNH Off Season Thread 2011

And your first post added exactly....what? Fail.

The point, you dope, is that I never claimed to and wasn't criticizing someone else for that either.

So using the internet meme "fail" doesn't really apply here. Don't worry, you'll figure out that internet thing sooner or later.

Why don't you put your helmet back on head back to the padded room so you don't hurt yourself and then the real UNH fans, many of whom I know are great people, can continue to debate the various topics of UNH hockey (ZOMG, I'm not on topic either, "fail.... durr........" *drool*.........).

Re: UNH Off Season Thread 2011

My guess to start the year:
Goumas-Borisenok-Moses
Speelman-Block-Henrion
Burke (if healthy)-Silengo-Downing
Sorkin-Willows-Pavelski

Kosto-Kipp
Knodel-Hardowa
Randall/Chevrier-TVR

If goumas is a starter, I am going to vomit.

You should probably go find a toilet then because other than maybe Henrion, Goumas has more offensive upside than any player on the UNH roster with more than 1 games worth of experience...and by a pretty significant margin at that.

Re: UNH Off Season Thread 2011

Seperate from Goumas' talent it is his speed complimenting Moses on the other side that could have him on the top line. I doubt many of us thought Sislo had 1st line talent going into his second year but his skill set (shot) was the most productive choice to be paired with JVR.

Re: UNH Off Season Thread 2011

Downing was a center at Westside, I want to see him paired with Henrion. There's no reason to bring Thrush in a year early if he's not going to play - Hill or Smith could have watched from the stands...

Speelman - Downing - Henrion
Goumas - Borisenok - Moses
Burke - Silengo - Sorkin
Willows - Block - Thrush
McCarey - Camper - Pavelski

Kostolansky - Kipp
Knodel - Hardowa
TVR - Chevrier
Agosta - Randall

Digirolamo
DeSmith
Wyer/Scott

Re: UNH Off Season Thread 2011

I realize that Downing has been a center and probably will be down the line, but with a logjam of guys that have been playing center, I see him getting his feet wet at RW, where there are fewer experienced guys. Similar to what the Bruins did with Seguin last year.

Looks like some solid groupings.
If Grayson Downing doesn't play center, he'll probably be on left wing with his left shot.
I agree that TvR is a bit further along than Ryan Randall at this stage of their careers and is likely to have the best chance at a regular shift.
While I'd really like to see Matt Willows get a lot of playing time, I wouldn't be surprised to see Casey Thrush and Jay Camper (if he's healthy) get as much, if not more ice time.
As the season progresses, there'll be a lot of opportunities for mix-and-match.

Re: UNH Off Season Thread 2011

I agree that Camper (if healthy) will probably be able to adjust quicker than the rest of the freshman, aside from Downing.
I think having Thrush come in a year early is stupid, Hill and Smith both have two years of Jrs, and another year of EJ for Smith won't do much for his development. Thrush could of had a good year in the USHL that could of helped significantly by rounding him out. It's a waste if he sits most of the season. Imo, Willows could take a little while to get used to the pace of play (as opposed to USHL kids).
Some interesting combos:

10-14-16
27-28-22
26-3-23
21-18-19/17/9

This year Umile needs to roll 4 lines - and he could easily do it with a set-up similar to the above.

As for defense, my hope is that Chevrier will turn into a very solid defender by the break. TVR and Knodel will take up the other positions with Randall and Agosta getting limited time.
