UNH Hockey: Where Do We Go From Here....

Welp 'Cat fans here we are in what could be our last weekend of the season. As always, hard to believe we are at this point, let alone facing elimination for the post season, but, what are you gonna do. Heading to BC today so if any of yous are there, do connect! Watching UMass battle UVM down to the last seconds last night gave me some hope. I know what we are up against. Just hoping we give it our all both games. Wishing the best to our women's team as well; hopefully they advance to the HE finals; it has to be a long time for them to make it to that game; for us, 2014. Anyhoo....Go 'Cats!!!!

And, our women have a NC.

Will follow online at a conference this weekend. Still counting on three goals, 4-2 L tonight, 1-0 W tomorrow night to make eighth.

Broken record alert but recruiting for consistent and pure scorers has been weak since approximately the Thompson, Sislo, Desimone era IMO. That team could score. Who remembers Thompson scoring late in the third at the Whitt to beat Maine at white out after Nyquist just missed somewhat of an empty net. I loved that team and era about ten ish year ago
Those were down years for those of us who were there for the late 90's/early 2000's; funny to look back at that narrative in hindsight now.

Re: UNH Hockey: Where Do We Go From Here....

To bring the lack of scoring in to focus, Gildon is the leading scorer this year with 27 points. Looking historically over the past 20 years or so, this would usually place him about 6th or 7th on the typical team (even '99). Now he is at the top. In regards to goals, we havent had a 20 goal scorer since Grasso started as a freshman 9 years ago (well actually 2016/17, but feels longer).

Snively would not have been called Lively with this type of anemia. As the new front running, absent minded presidential candidate would say, "Come on Man!".

Get on your pony soldier and get a W Cats!

It just occurred to me... this weekend (tomorrow for the quote on 3/7/10) is the 10 year anniversary of this amazing thread from which the quote in my sig was born:

Man on man, what a lot of fun things were back in those days when UNH would at least be good in the regular season.
Hahaha. What rabbit hole did you drag that out of?

Just be happy with your Umile trophy and give us mere mortals some life this weekend;);):/

Re: UNH Hockey: Where Do We Go From Here....

So not only did BC win the whole thing that year, UNH gagged against UVM in the QFs after winning game one (being shutout in games two and three) and then proceeded to lose to RIT with a chance to go to the FF. Not just a loss to RIT, but a 6-2 Umiliation.

Re: UNH Hockey: Where Do We Go From Here....

Say what you want, but Umile ensured that UNH would never suffer the umiliation of having expectations they can't meet. He and Marty made sure of that.

I blame that loss on myself. Even though my group had been to 18 straight FF at that time, we had no intention of watching hockey in a football stadium so we did not buy tickets for Detroit. Then UNH takes care of Cornell. After a few celebratory libations, I made my way back to the hotel and started looking for rooms and flights. I decided not to book until it was confirmed that we were on our way. Smart move.

A year or so ago I had a conversation with Dan here about those late aught teams and how they could have provided UNH a bounce in recruiting for the next several years. In 2008 UNH was a number one seed in Colorado Springs. They figured to have an easy path if they could get by Notre Dame but . . . Next year, at the Verizon they had the luckiest NCAA champion in Frozen Four history on the ropes but let a FF appearance, and possible championship, fritter away. Then there was 2010. What would the 20teens have looked like if UNH had gone to three straight FF and had won one of them? UNH historians always focus on 1999 in Anaheim, but these three regional losses, two in the finals, were as big a gut punch.

Ah the good old days... just wait for our newly renovated rink next year. You’ll have plenty of fodder to come back to our thread and make even more fun of us. We aim to please.

Scoring remember the 97-98 team. Hadn't learned to play D yet but man could they score... Krog 66, Bekar 60, Nolan 59 and Mowers 56... Three with 25+ goals two 30+ goals.

Re: UNH Hockey: Where Do We Go From Here....

Thanks to another 'gift' from NU the 'Cats haven't spent all 9 of their lives but they are pretty close. We'll know what's what before we arrive for our own game as the NU v BU game is on at 4. Being Senior night even if we don't get in (a NU win assures this) I hope we have a good final showing at the 'Whitt, in Lake 'Whitt, coz that's the last time we play a home game on the big sheet. Being at BC tonight got the feel of what the sheet will be like next season. And speaking of that game glad we were in it at least. Loved Angus' goal...and our Captain stayed out of the box. Managed to have a decent enough PK the first 6 mins of the 1st settled it early I guess. See some of you tonight for a last hurrah; will be at Libby's hopefully in time for a seat.

Re: UNH Hockey: Where Do We Go From Here....

Tonight will be exciting, because we currently have 88 goals. If we get one goal then year 5 of the transition will not be the lowest scoring UNH team in history since DI (that would be the 88 goals in year 3 of the transition). If we get three goals we would avoid being the second worst scoring team (that would be the 90 goals in year 4 of the transition)

Krog was second in BCJHL scoring when recruited, we beat Michigan State for him. Nolan was top 3 recruit in Prep hockey, beat BC for him. Mowers led USHL in goals, we beat NCAA champs Lake Superior for him. Derek Bekar was a top BCJHL scorer, we beat Denver for him. Scorers aren't grown at UNH, they have to be recruited by buying into a direction. After five years of weak recruiting by Umile, UNH got momentum the minute McCloskey arrived with a track record and a pipeline. Nolan, Bogunicki and Tim Murray sent a message to the community that UNH was back.

Of the scorers, 2 of the top 3 scorers (Grasso/Kelleher) were recruited by Borek. 17 of the kids on the team were recruited during Souza's tenure as lead recruiter/head coach.

Looks like our Cats will need 2 goals tonight on the big sheet for me and HR to win the 2.5-goal over/under contest on the weekend.

Go Terriors! Cough, cough.

Re: UNH Hockey: Where Do We Go From Here....

NCAA Watcher, thank you for posting that stat list. I was scanning the numbers and something remarkable jumped out that lets me know UNH will be just fine. The trend brings into clear focus how the continual upgrades of the Whitt brings solid results and keeps the on ice product at a high level. I am firmly in the camp that high end talent is overrated and one only needs flashy, shiny objects to attract it. Since 2010 at the Whitt - New paint scheme inside, spectacular LED lights, Rt 93 road sign update to the UNH logo and then the all important high def center ice scoreboard in Sept 2015 - LOOK AT THOSE RESULTS, scoring jumped 10%!! (Oh wait, seems it also helped the opposition improve 11%, what the??).

The dearth of scoring the last 3 years is clearly tied to the luster of the scoreboard wearing off without another upgrade close behind. Remember, that shiny brightness landed us Gildon and Maas after lengthy recruiting battles, what was their second choice school? As soon as the new refrigeration system is in place (worth half a stride), the rink width is shrunk 10% (high end skill and speed several feet closer to scoring already) and the uniqueness of the lower seat configurations are realized, Snively level scoring and Frozen Fours will return quickly. Maybe we will even get "tired of Winning."

Is there an auto fill sarcasm emoji on this site?

Looking at the box score, last night's game looked pretty even. I like our chances tonight!

Re: UNH Hockey: Where Do We Go From Here....

Seriously...I do not see why it's such a big deal we got a decent arena presence with a scoreboard that is better than the light bright crap they had when I started to follow. I don't adhere to the 'we had to do this to recruit better players' mumbo jumbo, but, I maintain it's laughable this wasn't an upgrade the 'Whitt desperately needed. I get it that things like that aren't the sharp, shiny objects that bring a players to a school to play. But, really? Let's just put a chain link fence up around the ice when we do the renovations to the ice while we are at it. Let's take down the vid board and put a monkey in charge of the score board at center ice; they can hold up numbers all through the game. Oh, and rip out the bathrooms and install some out houses while we're at it. I too am all done with the excuses about why we can't recruit the next Eichel or Krog while I'm at it. Even a place with the history of Matthews arena recognized it was time to do something (although I'm not overly thrilled with that huge vid board there, but, I don't play their bills and it doesn't detract from the experience of going there for this hockey enthusiast). You know what NU did to be where they are today? They created a culture of winning.

Despite "their tired, old dump of a building".... (which NU fans, I think is a iconic, wonderful place to watch a game) UNH has to do the same; it takes a vision, the player who buy into that, and have the ability to execute. I'm hoping this is what is happening albeit slow going at the moment as far as the wins/loss column goes. It didn't happen overnight for Jim Madigan and it's not going to happen overnight for Mike Souza. When I first started following we played NU in the qtrs.; took 3 games to beat them and that was our last, really decent season (2014). Look where NU went after that. HE titles, bean pots, trips to the FF and I know they did it with the players they recruited and a goal for excellence. You can't get there with cool amenities; its a vision and a total sell job about why you should play for us. I'm obviously not a recruiting expert like some on this board are but I like what I see coming in. AND I like the development of some of current players.

Tonight our Seniors will be honored. We are 1 point away from elimination. I hope they are able to do what's needed but have accepted the fate of not moving forward. It's hard and down right disappointing, but, I applaud the efforts of Captain Anthony Wyse, Liam Blackburn, Justin Fregona, Joe Lazzaro, and Matt Dawson. Thank you for your hard work over these past 4 seasons. May nothing but great things follow you.

Agree sir! Being there, I thought the 'Cats gave BC a game, once they settled down. I saw the faces after the final whistles...they hopefully will give it all they have tonight. If they were 'going through the motions" BC would have blown us off the ice. Knight made some key saves and BC locked it down like you'd expect a great team like them to do. Go 'Cats!!
