UNH Hockey 2023 Off Season Thread Turn and Face the Strange

Just for nostalgia sake, back in the early 70’s there was a gas shortage (remember?), and UNH shutdown for a month between semesters, but the hockey team, having to stick around, freshman and those still living in campus were moved into Babcock, with all of us living in a lounge area, sleeping on cots!! There were about 12 of us in the lounge, with Barney Buppert, a backup goalie in charge(a mistake in itself)….we spent most nights Down Under during the break, which at that time had all the peanuts you could eat for free, with shells, with permission, going onto the floor! Beers were $.10 for Happy Hour!! Honest to God!
One night DU, somehow both hockey and football teams,(enough football players to even the numbers) got into it, quite intensely! Captain Mike Burkhart grabbed my arm and was screaming that we had to get out quick, for any hockey player caught, Coach Holt would surely boot his butt from the team! Sounds innocent enough now but we had had a few other incidents that winter elsewhere….(something about a fire extinguisher thrown down onto a police car….a mailbox run over…)
Remember, only athletic teams were living on campus….so we had a lot of excess time on our hands! “Idol hands….!” ‍♂️♂️

Great story, zoofer! :-). Was that semester break 73/74? I was in Orono for grad school 1972/73-73/74 (only a club team playing on an outdoor rink along the Stillwater River there then) and remember the long lines at gas stations the summer of 1973, which led to a huge surge of students majoring in geology, lasting until the early 1980s when the oil glut led to a crash in oil exploration jobs. But I returned to Durham a few times during those two years when I could find friends with vehicles in Orono and they all wanted to visit the DU after hearing about it from me. And, I remember the peanut shells on the floor, sometimes several inches deep. :-)

So the question is whether HE has good parity and decent quality (3rd best conference behind B10 and NCHC), or if they are just BU and a bunch of meh teams and perhaps 4th behind the ECAC.

I think it’s now fourth behind the EZAC. For me the BC-Maine game at the 2004 FF in Boston signaled the end of the big four era and the 2015 national championship game in Boston signaled the end of Hockey East being the best conference.

The fact both Maine and NEU, who were both in the top six in hockey east, lost to Bentley this year says a lot. Bentley wasn’t even a good Atlantic hockey team. All of Providence, UML, UMA, and NEU are in decline and there aren’t really any teams going in the right direction other than maybe Merrimack and UConn. I don’t see either of those teams ever being anywhere close to as good as the top hockey east programs from the golden age. Folks can say Maine is improving because of how they did YOY but the last four years Red was coach they averaged a sixth place finish which is where the ended up this year. BC might turn it around but it hasn’t happened yet.

Bentley is an enigma. They hold a 4-4-2 record in their last 10 games against NEU and a 2-2-0 record all-time against UNH. Yet, the Falcons have not been to an AHA tournament in almost two decades and usually end up as a bottom-three team during the regular AHA season. Each of the past three seasons the Falcons have lost 2-3 of their top 3-4 scorers to the portal, including freshmen and sophomores. The beautiful new rink on campus still does not have a name and apparently has not helped much with recruiting or retention. Why is that?

I agree with pretty much all of this Drew. But I would swap Maine and Merrimack. I see Barr building a program in Orono as opposed to Borek assembling teams from year to year at Merrimack.

A mentor of mine told me to always remember that "water seeks its own level." Seems to me that Hockey East's decision to overwhelmingly schedule AH and ECAC teams demonstrates that the league understands its place in the larger landscape of college hockey. Thank god these visionaries didn't settle the United States. The west coast of the nation would be Hamilton New York.

There is a thin line between parity and parody. "The Big Four" wasn't all that bad. Some fans may hate to admit it but the league has lost a lot of larger than life characters over the past few years (Parker, York, Bertagna, and yes, Umile to name a few) and I don't see many candidates stepping forward to fill those shoes. Again, its probably not an opinion shared by many but I think that the departure of Notre Dame made the league weaker, even though that move probably made sense in terms of logistics.

The sad part for me is that even in this subpar environment my team is struggling to get traction.

Terrific post, kind of a view from above. The thing is, there is an opportunity to get UNH back up with UMaine, but it will depend on making the next coaching hire the right one, and one that will re-establish UNH as a force for the next generation. Because if they don't, I don't see Barr falling short of just that at UMaine. In retrospect, while Blue Skies was extending MS7 for no good reason, UMaine was hiring Ben Barr. Ouch.

Congrats to Patrick Grasso who broke the scoring record for the Adirondak Thunder with his 31 pts this season!!

And congrats to BU good luck going forward...

31 points is a scoring record?!? Are the Adirondack Thunder a soccer team?????

I guess! For a player not the team?!? (Single season) Just quoting what I saw on Twitter..

On another note glad to see someone is making an attempt to update UNH hockey history at the Whitt...am here for Mr HR's robotics competition...but it stops after MS7's first W in 2018...

You just can't keep away from the ol' place, can you 'Ref?? ;-)

Sounds like the hockey historians have got it about right, not much worth "history" during the subsequent seasons ...

Anything to keep us on the first page I guess? It's a great venue for this event. Last year it was down the street at whatever that tech biz is (name escapes)..

But kind of bittersweet after the Regionals...

Grasso has 50 points, Shane Harper is ahead of him with 63. Grasso has 31 goals, maybe that is the record?

Yes..its goals thanks for clarifying! And..that is since the Thunder joined the ECHL (as per their website)

That makes more sense. FWIW "Adirondack" (Glens Falls NY) used to be Detroit's AHL farm team for about 20 years, during which they won a total of four Calder Cups. This coincided with the dying years of the "Dead Wings" Era in Detroit, as all four Calder Cups came before the parent team won their four Stanley Cups in the late '90's/early '00's. Checked out their Wiki page for craps & giggles this morning, and the thing that struck me is the veritable "Who's Who" of the team's General Managers - which does NOT even include Jimmy Rutherford, who finished up his playing career in Glens Falls when Jimmy Devellano was their GM. Detroit - like many other NHL franchises - was part of the trend in the early years of this century to try to bring their AHL affiliate closer to the parent club's location; their current AHL affiliate plays in Grand Rapids MI as the "Grand Rapids Griffins".

If UNH is gonna pull the plug a year early on MS7, my guess is it will happen this week, OR it just won't happen ...

Rumor alert! MS7 was seen talking with AD Rich at the Regional...but HR has a feeling it wasn't about this... YET Chuck...it hasn't happened YET. When I was a high school health
teacher I would tell my students that the term YET meant "You're Eligible Too" when it came to drunk driving, etc...

Being clueless about such things (contracts to hockey coaches) I've kind of lost track of where we are in his contract...2024 right? He's def on the clock next season?

She was probably telling him, “Never mind, we can sell out this joint without the ’cats being in it. You’re safe.”
