UNH Commits & Recruiting: 2019 and Beyond

Re: UNH Commits & Recruiting: 2019 and Beyond

Have not heard of any new departures or injuries the past month, so are we full strength going into the new season?

As far as I know...we are ready to go! (that rhymes) Anyway...funny you should bring up the team today coz I got to thinking about the Captain situation even though it's mega early to talk about it; can't remember when they named it last season. There's 4 Seniors: Lazzaro, Wyse, Blackburn, Fregona, Dawson. Jrs: Grasso, Kelleher, Gildon, Robinson, Maas, Sacco, Sato. MacAdams. Early pick (s)? Wyse, Blackburn. I always pick Seniors but that doesn't mean they wouldn't go with a Jr. for the 'A'. Thoughts?

Wyse and Blackburn would appear to be the logical choices out of the senior class, as the other three are role player types. I've probably advocated for Gildon and/or Maass previously, in light of their prominent roles since Day One with the program. I'd be very surprised if anyone outside of that group figured in this year's official on-ice leadership team. But we've all been surprised before (you folks all know the names - no need to recount them again here). I think MS7 did a good job with the selections last season, so I trust him to get it right again this Fall.

Yup, you know me, as think that third and fourth lines and third D pairs are key.

The new guy looks like he has a 4th line ceiling TBH, Snively65. No bonus points for having the deepest team sitting in the stands. Shades of Scott Borek, and we hadn't seen that as much recently. All I can think (hope?) is that this kid is attached to a coach, or maybe another player with whom MS7 wants to curry favor? Thinking of the turn-of-the-century Saviano-to-get-Collins gambit, where Saviano turned out to be (much) better than the initial modest projections predicted. Here's to hoping, anyway.

We are always fed this line, but Steve Saviano did break the Middlesex League career scoring record his senior year with the Reading Rockets, surpassing none other than Stoneham's later-to-be MS7's record. Then, of course, the next year Sean Collins surpassed Saviano for the Middlesex League record. But, what fun it was to watch those two to continue to play together at UNH!

Boooooooooooo!!!!!!!' Directed at Tim Stutzle, not Mike.

Yes...it is a disappointment (understatement of the year) that Tim Stutzle will not skate as a Wildcat, but, of course, well...guess he's just ready for bigger and better horizons so what can you say realistically about that? This isn't the NCAA you guys knew of years back (I don't have to tell you that); players like him are looking to get to the NHL or whatever pinnacle that awaits such a player sooner than later and, rightly so. (I guess)

Even if he did come to UNH...it would have been most likely for a year, but, what a year it 'might have been'. We all saw what Jack Eichel, Cale Makar were able to do with their respective teams. We are just going to have to do it the 'old fashioned way' of getting the right players together at the right time...

Sigh....to coin a phrase from the Shawshank Redemption "some birds aren't meant to be caged". He's one of 'em. Good luck Tim! Will be watching the draft with great interest next season...obviously he's a first round choice.

So, looks like we're in the market for two defensemen next year as the most immediate need, then a goalie for 2021, and some more spots up front open in 2022

Depending on how he develops this season, Nick Ardanaz might enroll as a true freshman in Fall 2020. He's played in all 4 games with the West Kelowna Warriors this season and started in 2 of them. As a rookie in the BCHL, he's still relatively small for a defenseman - 5'10", 160 lbs., but highly skilled. With Will MacKinnon, Souza showed a willingness to admit a true freshman defenseman.
Here's what Nick said when he verbally committed to UNH last November:
"Talking to Coach Souza and Coach Stewart, if we both agree that after one year of junior I’m ready to make the jump, I can potentially go in as a true freshman. Otherwise, I will spend two years in junior and come into UNH after that."

(Scouting the scoreboard) Now goals in back to back games for Evans. Question is whether UNH can (a) can wait to see a larger sample size, and (b) has money/spots up front for him (yes in 2022, maybe not if he's 2021)

Here's the video of John Evans

Low level, so he can glide a lot, but the vision is there and good cornering. So far it hasn't hit at the BCHL level, but he'll score. He'll be one of those dangerous guys able to turn loose pucks in the netural zone into odd man rushes by fishing out the pucks.
