UNH Commits & Recruiting: 2016 and Beyond

Why is Umile being allowed to carry on? Does be have a lot of support among admin and donors? As bad as Maine's admin has been they got rid of Timmy the second time the team faltered. I don't want to see UNH win any trophies but it would be nice to see them(and hopefully Maine as well) back in the top four.

Can of Worms, meet Opener.

Opener, this is Can of Worms.

Re: UNH Commits & Recruiting: 2016 and Beyond

At this point I am of the view that Souza is wary of early commitments -- that is not really the Brown and U.Conn model from which he came. They are treading water hoping for late bloomers.
One, I think you're right. Two, I think Souza is completely wrong to take that approach.

In today's college hockey environment, no one can really afford to pick and choose how they bring in talent. Early commits, late bloomers, projects, Euros, Jr., prep, Canada, local, mid-Atlantic, etc. you need to have it all on the table. Yes, you need to prioritize and focus in areas that your program is more likely to be successful but it's completely misguided to just categorically take any of it off the table.

And this approach is concerning beyond recruiting. I want pragmatic not dogmatic. We've had 2 decades of hard headed, my way or the highway, we don't adjust for anyone, and where has it gotten us? Souza is acting like he's taking over a program running on all cylinders, when in fact, it's barely creeping along in the far right lane. Show me a couple of NC rings and then you can tell me what you don't do to win but for now that approach is really misguided at best, if not delusionally arrogant. He's like a CEO taking over a company with 6 months of solvency and the first thing he does is go on vacation. Next he'll be forming a committee to change the color of the walls in the cafeteria, while the payroll isn't being met.

We have no idea what his philosophy or skills are. He has essentially two stops as the #2 assistant at Brown, two more at Division II U.Conn. Typically he was the "coaching" assistant and the recruiting was done by the other assistant.
He may be carrying out his philosophy, or he may just be learning the ropes somewhat, while waiting to hire his recruiting assistant. We don't know whether they have offered any 00s, 01s or 02s and have struck out, or whether they refuse to do so on philosophy. We just know nobody is walking through that door.

He's never told us what his plan is to make UNH great again, the "top guys" he'll hire and "best deals" he'll make. We don't even know how he feels about foreigners and whether he likes foreigners from Europe or Canada taking our jobs. [/notsosubtlereferencetolikemindedpoliticianSouzalikes]

We only know Dick Umile surveyed the entire hockey community and determined this 4th year assistant was too good to let slip through the cracks and needed to be locked up three years before the actual transition.

Very interesting take. Watcher, how would you compare Souza's resume prior to being hired to those of of some of the other "young guns" that have sparked other programs?

Let me continue to draw the distinction between a "coach" vs. recruiter.

Souza has no notable recruiting success. The kind words about Souza seem to be his ability to coach and connect with current players. His interview suggests the same. By nature, we cannot judge how good a "coach" he is based on his track record.

By comparison, Leaman had four years as an assistant at Harvard when Union hired him. Greg Carvel had one year at SLU before he got the top job. Not tremendous track records with the prior teams, but they show this model can work.

There are examples of good recruiters for top programs, who benefit from the ability to leverage reputation, but are not successes. For example, Seth Appert had many years at Denver, mostly making name as recruiter. BC has sent Paluch to Bowling Green, Mike Cavanaugh to UConn.

Veteran solid assistants who earned stripes coaching (contrasted with recruiting). Lowell, Norm Bazin, Yale - Keith Allain, Red Gendron, Maine, Michelleto at U.Mass

I may be that we just have to wait for him to hire a competent recruiter. Every top coach needs someone to buy the groceries. If that's not Souza's skill set, he needs to hire an assistant with that skill ASAP.

That's exactly the insight I was looking for - thanks!!

Re: UNH Commits & Recruiting: 2016 and Beyond

Similar to Joey Laleggia and Mike Vecchione stories, an insight into the risk of deferring kids

Kawaguchi quietly stepped away from his commitment to the Providence Friars near the end of last season. Around Christmas, the NCAA powerhouse told him they may hold him back another year, which weighted heavily on him down the stretch and into the BCHL playoffs. "They had a lot of guys coming in and ai felt there wasn't going to be a lot of room for me next year. Walking away from Providence was hard, but I just didn't fee it was the right fit for me. Colle is your home for four years and you want to be happy where you are."

Agreed. And if his name isn't Glenn Stewart, then a change needs to be made before Umile leaves.

Re: UNH Commits & Recruiting: 2016 and Beyond

There are some CA stars, Western Canada stars, one or two Ontario stars and as always a good number of blue states on 95 kids that might be the next Bobby Butler.

Let's see if recruiting = getting. Hopefully we get some news in the next few weeks from the Western Canada (BCHL/AJHL) camps, from which the early commitments of rookies typically come.

As to the Ontario stars, Hillis, who visited UNH last year, retains his NCAA eligibility. Still miles to go (1) to get a commitment, given other big schools will be seeking him (Michigan and BU are usually players in Ontario), and (2) he will be pursued the the OHL for the next two years.

Are you referring to a replacement for Pots? A la incoming this fall?

Are you referring to a replacement for Pots? A la incoming this fall?

Or, a replacement for Chris Bourque? Only 14 forwards on roster at the moment; if all the schollie money is gone, maybe need a couple of walk-ons? Or, maybe move up Boyd permanently?

Re: UNH Commits & Recruiting: 2016 and Beyond

1932's comments are for recruiting down the road. I believe the roster is set for this year. There is no real need to replace Chris Bourque -- you'll see below a lot of the recruits project for bottom 6 lines, so the depth will be there based on current commitments. What they lack are top 6 recruits. The thing that the list below shows the availability of a full scholly for a 2018 forward, and only a couple in 2019 (unless, as always happens, things change.) Therefore, UNH needs to be selective -- which probably explains in LARGE measure why there is slow movement on the 00s and 01s. Too many mistakes already in the pipeline limit resources. Also, it was said UNH had to overpay for the current recruits (prob. Fregona and Blackburn) to keep them, so there was less money available down the road. One thing that happens when credibility dips, it takes more money to get kids.

Hillis is a 00 junior in HS, and I suspect the Californians and Western Canadians he references are 00s and 01s. Those are hopefully the top 6 types.
