I disagree with the ratings, as the 2016 class is a decent class probably closer to 9th, ahead of Merrimack and Vermont, probably a bit higher than Maine.
However, as far as "nowhere to go but up", our 2017 and 2018 classes are very substandard, and trending downward. I'm sure a plan exists somewhere, just no results to see yet.
Fregona is going to be a good scorer as a junior/senior. Between Blackburn and him, and potential in Grasso, they have more upside than Merrimack and similar to Maine (Pearson & Pappalardo). I'd put Wyse and Hollway about the same. Not sure I see much upside in Merrimack's class. U.Conn really only has one above average guy, Huska.

I think that Jeff still had BU recruit Clayton Keller's name on his brain when he finally got to UNH at the end of his report. Maybe Maller will be injury-free and surprise on our blueline this season?

Glenn Stewart and Mike Souza are good recruiters who've identified some top talent, but the higher end players just aren't choosing UNH like they once did.
This certainly jumped out at me though! Unfortunately, being a good recruiter requires more than the ability to point out the top talent on the profile sheet. That's the easy part. Good recruiters land players. Higher end players aren't choosing UNH anymore, because the recruiting isn't as good anymore...
... and the recruiting isn't as good anymore because the program has been backsliding for the last decade plus, and the guys in charge (Umile and his current and post-McCloskey assistants) just aren't convincing kids to believe in them and their program anymore. And Providence and UMass Lowell have stepped into the vacuum and taken the place of UNH and UMaine.
No overnight solutions out there, other than really really hard work and maybe getting a couple of breaks.
Has UVM taken some kids you would have gotten in the past as well? It almost seems to me that around the time they came in the league is when UNH started going downhill.
I’ve never seen UVM as a player in UNH’s decline. I’d say it’s a mix of self-inflicted laziness and the upswing of UML and PC, with the bulk of it being the former.Has UVM taken some kids you would have gotten in the past as well? Complacency, self-inflicted laziness ... pretty synonymous, six of one, half dozen of another.
I think the *death* of the Old Man of the Mountains has more to do with UNH's fall than UVM (and that's zip).
Actually, just the reverse, I think. Thomas Vanek was shown a photo of the Old Man of the Mountain when he was a little boy growing up in Austria, which for some bizarre reason infuriated him. Maybe he thought that the Old Man was constructed by aliens? In any case, being the only non-Minnesota-born player on the Gopher team in 2002-2003, he made demise of the Old Man a cause like no other, and a little less than three weeks after he stuck daggers into the hearts of Cats fans in Buffalo, the Old Man came tumbling down, succumbing to Vanek's voodoo pins.
I think it was just a silly autocorrect and poor proofreading on my part. Thanks for pointing it out. It has been fixed.
I just have to say, that I feel you have way under projected for this group. I say 6-7, granted you and certainly others know more about recruits. It certainly lacks bue chippers but they are more mature and capable than you projection. We will see as the years role on. They will be lead by the 2 very under experienced upper classes. Just not a lot of ice and therefore goals in these 2 classes. Certainly a trend of late at UNH but a true aberration this year. Size will affect this class with only 3vR able to anchor a line in this class. I love their skill sets but as I said they will suffer from having to produce quickly as freshmen. We need to upgrade the next 2 classes or they will really struggle. Liam is the obvious go to but 3vR will grow into a solid contributor and PG and JF will not disappoint.
In a perfect world/season the offense fares ok even with the loss of Poturalski as TyK, Eiserman and Vela have monster years. 2nd year Nazarian/Miller along with Mc Nick find the back of the net as well as DMan Capt. Cleland. Dylan Maller and newbie Wyse contribute and we finally see what Dylan Chanter is capable of, not to mention Matt Dawson with a years experience under his belt. Add to this are the new guys you speak of who will indeed get major ice time (trial by fire?) so I think that we might be ok. (relative term at this stage of the game) Question is... once again this season...will we be able to skate the puck out of the zone and support whoever is in net. Seems like a very important element that has to come through in recruiting in future classes. We wait and see...
