Seriously?? Already de-committed??

Re: UNH Commits & Recruiting: 2016 and Beyond

Should we change the thread title, which is increasingly becoming misleading?

Couple of notes --
1. I am not too troubled by O'Neill's decommitment, as I never saw him as a top 6 forward, even if he has come out of the gate well this season. They have enough bodies at forward next year and in theory should be able tor replace him (but see point 4, below.)

2. They need a 2018 forward who can grow on fourth line in 2017, but by the sophomore year would need to be a top 6 forward. Cipollone looks to have extremely limited offensive skills, and Esposito seems to have none (2 goals in 53 career games, and in and out of the lineup this year).

3. For defense, Yikes..... It already is a weak spot, and one would have thought the graduation in the next two years of only one impact kid (Cleland), and four average to below average kids (Maller, Marks, Boyd, Chanter) would provide them a chance to upgrade. I don't see that this has occurred. Replacing Cleland/Maller with Darcy (who has regressed) and J.Miller (who is uneventful) will be a downgrade. For 2018, Corson Green is raw and rotating in as a six/seven defenseman in the USHL, Bahn did not make a USHL roster or even its protected list and is doing OK in a weak league. Verrier is another lightly recruited kid. Surely this is not the next core of the team's D.

4. What are they doing with the ton of money that they seemingly should have available? They have cleared Poturalski and Foegele through early departures, but invested none for this year. They have lost/shed committments of Farabee, two O'Neills, Masonius and Ryczek (and I suppose Kalinowski). Normally one would expect some/a lot of activity showing the additional funds. I blasted Borek for trickling money to lower level kids, one every month, it seemed, but now we're at about a six month period with no commitments (save for the low-cost flier on Verrier).

5. Not shown below are goalies. Clark's injury raises an issue, and Robinson's limited role in the USHL is not encouraging. At a minimum they need to replace Tirone in 2018, if not Clark, too.

Conclusion. UNH was projected as a 10th place team this year. In theory, to move forward, they need to upgrade each class as it graduates. This year will be an extreme challenge, as they graduate a superlative forward (Kelleher) and their stud defenseman (Cleland). The following year 2018 was to graduate the huge 11 person class, which has now been whittled down to 8 -- with the talented part of the class already having departed (Poturalski/Foegele). Seemingly replacing those 8 should have allowed (1) a lot of new recruits, and (2) talent upgrades. Neither has happened yet -- we have two kids, Crookshank and Green. The pool of available top-end kids seems shallow. Most teams are recruiting for 2019 and beyond already.

Re: UNH Commits & Recruiting: 2016 and Beyond

For real as in tonight's game may be postponed or a metaphor as in we had fire, now we have flood, then we will have locust?[/QUO

Running the full gamut!!! It's game on from what I read...

Re: UNH Commits & Recruiting: 2016 and Beyond

Considering you have a head coach who has checked out of the recruiting game years ago, and is now officially a lame duck ... throw in that your two lead recruiters don't have reputations as legit D-1 guys (yet?), with one biding his time to take the top job and perhaps not being given free rein to go get what he wants/needs out there (or worse yet, not being able to sell his future program) ... and the other one potentially biding his time for another job somewhere else, having been passed over (prematurely?) for the top job here ... I'm guessing none of us should be all that surprised. Disappointed, yes ... but surprised? Heck no. Good call, BS35+4.

Re: UNH Commits & Recruiting: 2016 and Beyond

I thought that I read in several places a few years ago that BvR was supposed to be the best vR, but apparently he is not projected to make Watcher's top 6 linemen during his four years. Wonder what happened?

I've never read/seen that high an assessment of BvR, but then again TvR came to UNH with fairly modest expectations, and by the time he left, he was a completely different, far more developed player. Obviously, since then he's spent most of his time at the NHL level with a team whose line-up is not an easy one to crack.

BvR has not impressed me to date, but as I've said a couple of times on here since the season began, I'm inclined to give him the benefit of some time and patience, given the initially delayed, and subsequently accelerated path TvR followed.

well he had an assist last night and just missed scoring on an open net. I think he'll come along...I remember those reports about him as well. Want to give him the chance to figure out D1 play along with the rest of the newbies out there (including those who didn't play much last season)..

If that backhand had found the net we would all be singing a different BvR song Sunday morning. Yes, he is still a bit behind the play but in my view, he is not making the big mistakes - poor passes and turnovers. I saw 2 players that had very solid games. JS continues to deserve playing on the first line. He is still trying to find the rhythm of that line but it will come together. The second is Mr.Wyse, he is improving every game. He is so calm out their, doesn't get shaken on those endless rushes. And perhaps the first D-man that will hit for UNH since.....? He will be good and fun!
The final observation. The 5/6 men on the ice at the end on Saturday were totally gassed. Poor TK and MC, they had lost their game. Perhaps all coaches want their best on the ice at the end, but at that point in time with those kids, they where not the best. Not sure how many minutes they were out their and certainly not saying they didn't play with heart, but chasing pucks all over the ice makes anyone tired.

Totally agree; hope I didn't sound critical of him because I think he's going to come along nicely. You are right; how diff it would've been had we won the game! Guess the frustrating part is going down 2-0 in the first few mins of the game. We 'chased the game' all night just like the B's did with the Habs (stealing that line from the commentator; think it fits) Think there's lots of frustration right now (fans included) but they've gotta figure that out and keep plugging. I know it's probably useless to compare the two but can't help but keep in the back of my mind NU's start to the season last year (yes, I know the personnel is different) and not saying we are going to win HE so relax haha. Like Chuck's optimism for the coming week! We shall see. Good observation of the end of the game.
