UNH - BU Home and Home

Re: UNH - BU Home and Home

BU isn't very deep and the D is too porous he said, not really that good...not my words at all but I find that many of the scouts are never really impressed with college teams just the individuals they need to fill their rosters, so with that said, UNH has to win tonight or this weekend falls into the category of another split weekend with BU, and all the hype of today's comments fall by the wayside

What do you have against periods? This one sentence has about six different topics in it.

Re: UNH - BU Home and Home

Meh. I've been waiting for BU to drop a dog of a game for awhile now.

Honestly, you'd think everyone had forgotten this is a very very young team on the ice for BU. They're bound to get thoroughly outplayed at times this season.

It's been a surprising start to the season that they've come together as well as they have. Usually we don't see coherent play in a young BU team until January.

That said, it'll be interesting to see how they respond to last night's drubbing. Even if it's not a win, they need to come out playing better hockey again.

Anyone know why UNH wasn't wearing their roads for the Blue Out? Jackie not bring the home whites up?

This.

Good sign that they responded with a win.

Unfortunate Connolly is out for a while.

Well fortunately a good deal of the time he's out will be over the Christmas break. If we can't beat NU and Brown at home without him, we don't deserve to be beating them in the first place. Definitely a significant loss for the BC series, hopefully we can have him back in Chicago. I have to disagree with Parker, I thought Noonan had a terrible weekend and looked totally lost at times out there, not to mention a couple of boneheaded turnovers in his own zone, the slot no less. Could've easily been 4-4 if UNH converted on the early Christmas gifts our guys tried to give them a few times in the second. Nice response and clamp down in the third. Coyle absolutely was owning the puck down low against the boards. He moved at will and out positioned and bodied everyone on loose pucks and while cycling. Amazing that a kid that young has the skill to do and go wherever he pleases with the puck in those situations.

Yeah I'm sad as hell I'm not going to get to see Coyle play live. What a bad-***.

we could get two seasons out of him if he goes the wilson route. he is a true freshman, so it's not like he's racing to sign a pro contract to maximize his prime stage. he's got boat loads of talent, but needs some refinement, and of course a full offseason of conditioning with Boyle could do nothing but wonders for him in helping to build an NHL body.

Re: UNH - BU Home and Home

Does anyone know why the UNH goal was waved off early in the second period? There was no mention of it in the game recap. UNH radio saw the replay and could not tell why it was not a goal.

Post came off the mooring. Or, if you're a UNH fan, the refs suck and Jack has them all in his pocket. :)

It was mentioned in this recap. ;) The replay was deceiving because your attention was naturally drawn to the right post where the puck and sticks were, but it was actually the left post that came off.

Similarly, Jack asked for a goal review during the Friday game. NESN repeatly replayed Milan's skate hitting the right post causing the net to wobble. But that is not what Gravelese and crew were looking for. They apparently were looking for a high stick and spent an inordinate amount of time looking for one. There was nothing resembling a high stick by Thompson or a high stick that 'lead directly to a goal' that would be cause for review - at least IMO. Huge amount of time spent on this review - and by inference a lot of deference to Jack.

So a question: How far back from a goal can the stripes review? A non-call high stick prior to this goal is not reviewable. Same with a hypotheical noncall of a puck that barely leaves zone at blue line but is kept in followed by a pass-shoot-score.

Can anyone clarify what is reviewable?

That's exactly the attitude that turns the Brown game into a disaster. Brown just swept Colgate and Cornell on the road for the first time in 18 years. Granted both teams are off to terrible starts, but Brown is no gimme. Largely the same team that pulled some shockers in the ECAC playoffs last Spring.

Coyle's weightroom performance at the NHL combine made him a hot subject there. I think he was first in 10 categories. He'll continue to get bigger and stronger, but where Boyle will help him most is with his first step and explosiveness. Sharks have a pretty good pipeline now so at least two years is likely. Doug Wilson tends to be patient with college players, especially those playing in high-end programs and Tim Burke knows the longer a kid plays for Parker the more likely he's ready to play pro hockey in all three zones. It's why someone like John McCarthy made the Sharks and stays in the lineup.

Re: UNH - BU Home and Home

For this UNH fan, last night's loss was pretty disappointing. UNH had a ton of chances in the first but, fortunately for BU, could only get one goal. In the second, UNH seemed to be in control, a disallowed goal then a minute or so later, another one that counted. It all fell apart at the end of the second. Way too many giveaways in our end. I suppose DiGi could have stopped one of them (slow getting the glove up) but, really, the fault rests with the skaters. Too casual with the puck in their own end, and it came back to bite them. I am pretty sure Coach Umile was none to pleased, based on his pithy comment in the Globe that "we mismanged the puck in our end." That pretty much sums it up.

Certainly not the end of the world, but it would have been nice to sweep.

I think you're seeing Clendening's turnovers and assigning them to Noonan.

We were in row G in the section on Rollheiser's right and clearly saw the puck in the net before Rollheiser lifted his right post off its mooring. I was certain that the refs spent the time they did in review looking at something else, such as a possible high stick or a hooking penalty on BU, but we were still surprised when the goal was waived off with no penalty. About a minute later when UNH scored again all the BU fans around us wanted that goal waived off also. :)

I think that UNH offensively outplayed BU in all three periods on Saturday night, but the object of the game is putting the puck in the net, and UNH clearly failed at that in the third period. Coughing up the puck for a SH goal midway through the second did not help either. I think that the BU D-men did a good job clogging the middle and clearing pucks that Rollheiser left out front from bounces off his pads, yet they did not screen Rollheiser much in the 43 shots that he faced.

Overall, I thought that it was a great game, which reminded me of some of the best UNH-BU games over the years. Will be interesting to see where these two teams are in the rankings when they meet again at Lake Whitt in late January.
