UNH At The Starting Gate....

Re: UNH At The Starting Gate....

Late coming to comment on these games. We had a great time in Oxford. Great weather, very friendly people, some great pubs (Steinkellers and Mac & Joe's were great places to hang out). And got some golf in at Hueston Woods, nice track but a bit of a challenge for an old guy like me, even from the white tees.

Love the arena but two things rankled me. First, we had standing room only seats. I think as a courtesy to fans who travel significant miles to watch their team, it is only proper that the host team give them someplace to sit. As much as I hate where Maine sits us, at least we are sitting. In all my travels to visiting rinks, I have never been given standing room only tickets before.

Second, what's up with these "media time outs", which always seemed to come just as Miami is going on a power play. Very fishy to me. Is this a standard practice in Oxford or the CCHA?

There are a very limited number of non-season ticket seats available so SRO is really the only way they can get visiting fans in outside of the small visiting team allotment (which are rarely ever occupied by visiting fans). I agree it isn't the best way to treat people who make the trek to Oxford, but demand for tickets has spiked to the point that donations are now required to be a season ticket holder. Keep in mind it is only a 3,200 seat arena (900 of those being free student admission).

I believe that media timeouts are standardized across the CCHA this season.

Glad to hear that you had a good time in Oxford!

Speaking of Micflikier, Jacob scored the first ever goal for the newest team in the AHL - the Charlotte Checkers.

In Hockey East, every school has to make available tickets (I think it's 100) for away fans. Although things are different at now, 10 years ago UNH was selling out every home game, there was a tremendous demand for tickets, but seats were always there for fans of the visiting team. When Miami fans travel to, say, Michigan or Notre Dame, are they provided with seats or standing room? If it is the former, then I think Miami has an obligation to reciprocate.

We did have a great time in Oxford though. Quite a party scene downtown both Friday and Saturday. Makes UNH, which had a deserved reputation as a party school in the past, look like a monastery.

Re: UNH At The Starting Gate....

Feeling deprived after the long spring and summer, i'zon?;) Me too - it was a pleasure to see the men in blue play again.
As usual, your observations are right on the mark (i.e., I agree with them:) )
I think Burke only skated the first couple of shifts with Borisenok and Moses, then what happened?

I was a tad!! I must admit! ;)

Nice to see that yourself and G.A. seem to also believe that team speed is there. It jumped out pretty good on the replay. Speed is always difficult to defend in any sport, nevermind one played that is played on ice. If you can mix speed an chemistry, you will have a pretty product out there.

Great to see 2 breakaway goals last weekend as well, in Moses and Speelman - Moses getting hauled to the ice and Speelman on his own rebound. And Moses' goal coming after 2 relatively quick Miami goals was HUGE! Showed a bit of the character the UNH team is becoming known for - particularly over the past 2 seasons.

I think Umile is going to really showcase the speed element of the team next week in Durham. It's going to be a track meet! Unfortunately, I'm going to miss it..:( I've only been to 1. It was the OT thriller in Worcester, Circa '98-'99 that sent the cats off to the Frozen 4!! I was about 3 rows away from that bleeping band and that bleeping song- Thankfully, the Cats won! Hopefully, they will this weekend as well.

My impression from one TV and one radio game is that Miami was having success shooting high at Digi?

Yes and many of the goals came from shots taken between the top of the two faceoff circles - that is, from medium range.

Re: UNH At The Starting Gate....

Most of the shots were high, but as CHC said, they were almost all Grade A opportunities and he was screened on a number of them. Overall I was pleasantly surprised with his play and feel a lot better about this team's chances than I did a week ago at this time.

As far as what happens for Miami fans on the road I'm not really sure. Typically to buy tickets in the Miami block you have to be part of Miami's athletic association (aka be a donor), so as a student I've always just bought tickets through the other university or stub hub.

Honestly, outside of BGSU and OSU (No ticket issues at either venue) I wouldn't say that we send all that many fans to say a Notre Dame, nor do those schools send fans to Oxford. The UNH contingent last weekend was one of the the largest I've seen at the Goggin. Were you able to grab seats after the 1st period?

Uptown Oxford can be quite the spectacle on a Friday night, you of course had the added benefit of it still being warm out so that the women of Miami were at their...classiest?

We did get seats after the first period of the second game because the place wasn't sold out. Which leads me to ask why we were unable to buy seats in the first place. The usher was cool about it, we had some nice folks around us and I think they were a little shocked at UNH's second period barrage. Very nice facility, the Goggin. Very nice campus as well. And, after the games, as you imply, the downtown was quite a . . . show.

Re: UNH At The Starting Gate....

So, what do folks think my chances are for getting a ticket or two at the box office a couple of hours before game time on Saturday night at Lake Whitt?

What a fine start for the Cats OOC this season! I wanted to see this year's first line play more (at all; I do not remember?) as a line the past two years. Relieved that DiGi is off to a good start also, of course.

Re: UNH At The Starting Gate....

I am sure you might be able to get some of those $75.00 "premium" seats that UNH is selling.

Re: UNH At The Starting Gate....

Well have to say that I had no expectations going into the year, neither good or bad, thought it was year with alot of questions. Got to say after tonight's game my expectations might be going up alot faster then I thought. Got to like the way they played tonight, well except for on the kill and the PP, but 5 on 5 they were solid. Know its still early but like what I see so far.

Re: UNH At The Starting Gate....

What a thoroughly enjoyable evening of hockey. The Whit looked nice and clean. All the student sections were filled to the brim with enthusiastic youngsters. The pep band sounded good with a couple new tunes. Red Berenson looked spry and distinguished. Coach Umile's black mock tee didn't jinx the team.

And boy was the hockey exciting. Up and down, speed, sharp passes, amazing saves at both ends. The Cats stayed right with a team with, count them, 13 NHL draft picks. Count the disallowed goal in the first period (supposedly, the ref lost sight of the puck) and you might have had a 4-3 victory. I think the final shots on goal were 47-31 (does that sound right?!) in favor of UNH. Looks like the 2010-11 Wildcats will be competitive with any team.

Have to say that was one of the most entertaining games I have seen in a long time, lots of end to end action great chances on both ends, and some solid goaltending by both goalies. I think the Cats are showing they can play with the top teams, BC will be a huge test they do look to be one of those specail teams this year. But if the Cats keep getting better every week who knows what will come of this year, but looks like it might be a fun ride

"stayed right with them"? you guys out shot 'em 48-30 including 8-1 in the OT so it seems to me THEY stayed with you.........looks like it should have been a UNH win but starting with those 3 tough games and playing well at least answers some questions in a positive way up there in Durham

Re: UNH At The Starting Gate....

I have to agree with Sterlippo....we did more than stay with them...accept for their obvious talent on the PP, we pretty much controlled the game....so after 3 games, it seems that UNH is as good as a couple of top rated teams,,,I'm sure Cornell and BC will show us that each game we have to come to play and play for a full 60....exactly how the season will be, a game by game progression to hopefully another successful season..yes, even without a NC I think we've been successful, year in and year out... heck, look at the fun that everyone at the Whitt had last night, a great hockey game!

Re: UNH At The Starting Gate....

UNH's team speed was again very noticable last night!! UNH grabbed lots of loose pucks, went to the net etc.. 1-1-1 against these M-O and UM will pay off down the rd. Cornell lost a bug chunk over the last season, who knows where they will end up. Scrivens and Nash. I think the bigged test yet to come is BC! Also very fast, highly skilled and as seasoned as they come. Very encouraged, and a bit surprized by their ability to use their speed the way they have. A bit more coordination around the net and they will be, and showing that they are, a very very tough team to compete against.

Good stuff-

Re: UNH At The Starting Gate....

Great college hockey game for sure. It felt like a March playoff game as opposed to an early season game. Hunwick stood on his head or otherwise UNH gets the W. The cats have a lot of firepower so if you like o-fence then you'll be a happy camper this year. GO CATS the rest of the way.

Thanks for coming east to play us Mr. Berenson. I was surprised you didn't pick up another game while you were here but it makes us feel extra special that you made the trip out just for us. Hope you enjoyed the Whit and the UNH campus and such.
