Re: UNH At The Starting Gate....

Paul Thompson just got some facetime on the Bruins' Postgame show on NESN. Kathryn Tappen interviewed him as a preview to this weekend's back-to-back games.

He looked thrilled :p

Shouldn't he be back in his dorm resting up? :)

Re: UNH At The Starting Gate....

The most pleasurable event at the Whitt last evening? The get together of a bunch of fanatics who share a love of UNH hockey and have helped form this online community.
Malts18, gounhwildcats, limeycat, Scott, UNHhockey29, ClOuD 9, thecomicbookguy, zoofer and unhvancouver, to name a few. Great fun to talk hockey (and life) with these folks face-to-face.

Oh ya - the UNH victory was pretty exciting as well. Despite some sloppy play in the defensive end, it was a decisive win. Turning point: about 12:40 remaining in the third period, score at 4-3, a Mainer has a breakaway against DiGi, and he makes a tremendous save. The momentum shifts and UNH adds 2 more goals. There's plenty more to post about - individual efforts, mistakes, and surprises - but I'll let these other folks provide the details. A good time was had by all (well, except for the loyal fans with the extra shade of blue in their jerseys). Should be another close game tomorrow night; I mean tonight.

Re: UNH At The Starting Gate....

I would love to see that. Somewhere ther must be an archive of the older games that were broadcast on NH public television. I'm always hoping that the Athletic Dept or Friends will put together some kind of DVD about the history of UNH Hockey.......
Last night there was a guy roaming around the student section (and possibly else where) with a camera recording for what I was told will be a "UNH Hockey documentary", don't have any more info than that. Hopefully they open up the archives for it.

It was Gustav Nyquist who had the breakaway and Digi turned him away stone cold it was beautiful

Re: UNH At The Starting Gate....

My first attempt at a time-lapse video. Came out pretty good, should probably brighten it a little next time, but anyway....
Does anyone know the name of that circus-y song they play when they open the doors and let the student section people in? I'd like to add it to that clip if possible :)

Gonna try again tonight with something different, possibly longer...

Re: UNH At The Starting Gate....

Wow-- what a crazy 1st period!! Was fun to watch.

Little off the beaten path here- I thought a few things stood out to me last night -
1. Steve Moses-- not only does he have helpers in each of the last 3 games, but showed tremendous poise around the next last night, particularly in the second period with 2 grade A chances that he created, and what was a noticably different than in the first half of the yr was his control of the puck!! With just a an inch or two difference on the shots, he could have easily had 2 goals. Horse Shoes and hand granades, though, right!! But I think he's found gear around the net that works well for him- he could be lighting the lamp at a hockey rink near you soon!

2. With arguably a light crew of Jr's- the amount of experience both on Defense and Offense that the Soph's and Fr's are getting is invaluable. Block is playing very well again, he's a bit older, so I always forget he's just a sophmore! Henrion is flying around the place, eager for ANY opportunity to shoot the puck(u got to luv it). Burke, Sorkin, Silengo- a 4th line? Are you kidding? That's not even fair! (although that Mangene kid on Maine was up to the challenge, that was for sure) Goumas finds the net in a huge game and Speelman showing that he's got some good hands around the net as well!

Hardowa- a +10, and only 1, 1 penalty all yr long. That helps- Kostalansky, believe it or not- he leads the soph. class in total career points- for now anyway! Henrion and Speelman are on the way.

Anyway- Great team effort last night top to bottom.

It was beautiful and it was the play of the game in my opinion. Considering it's Nyquist, who's already scored the hat trick and has a chance to again pull Maine within a goal....that save was huge. If I'm not mistaken, Thompson's goal wasn't even announced yet and DiGi stones Nyquist and holds the two goal cushion.

Re: UNH At The Starting Gate....

Watching the game from the warm confines of my home-- at 15seconds left-- all I can say is-- Holly F.. Schit!! What a thriller!! What a goal!!

If Paul Thompson's not on your Hobey watch list-- he sure should be now!

Re: UNH At The Starting Gate....

perhaps-- they lived by the seat of their pants in the last 10min tonight, and took every punch Maine gave them and then gave it back to them. Long stretch left to go yet, though, C-H-C! 2 games in March, 2 games in April- that's what it boils down to. Tough not to get excited though!!! Right!?

Goumas is a great addition to the second line- it's almost if Moses and Bori don't want to be out done by the Frosh!! I think these lines are set until they prove they don't belong together!!

The lines sure looked good tonight. Hard to imagine that Burke-Silengo-Sorkin is the
4th line. Can you remember Coaches Umile and Borek juggling the lines this much through midseason? It has generated some interesting and effective combinations.

Needless to say, UNH had some defensive lapses this weekend (understatement award). However, having seen last night's game in person and tonight on NESN (with the benefit of replays), the Maine forwards deserve a great deal of credit for controlling the puck and creating multiple chances in the offensive end. Gustav was amazing. The Hobey Hat Trick guy from last season showed up big time.

Chad just called and said how much he'd enjoyed chatting with you, and how much you and I would probably enjoy discussing our era face to face. He and Dean (I got to say hi to him also) sure picked the right weekend to make the trip, no?

Best, Richard

Re: UNH At The Starting Gate....

How many more last minute goals can this team score for the win or to tie it up? Unbelievable finish. Maine looks like it has the win in hand with a Nyquist breakaway with DiGi out of the net AND HE HITS THE POST!!!!! OMG!!!! Then Thompson just flips the puck up as he's skating by the net and it goes over the goalie's shoulder for the go ahead goal with 15 seconds left.

UNH has had plenty of third period teams but we haven't had one like this one that seems to be able to score when it has to in the final minute. I've been watching since 1969-70 and can't remember a team that has been able to flip a switch and score at the end like these guys.

Defensively, they were really weak tonight. They seem to get lazy and not skate. That fourth goal was a perfect example with Sislo cruising up the ice behind the goal scorer -- gave him an uncontested shot in the slot. That first line has to step up the defensive play. Actually everyone needs to hustle more getting to loose pucks....and I wish they would put a body on a guy...but I know that's not Umile's style.

I wonder if it was a planned approach to allow Maine to enter the zone and give them an open shot at the net from far out. That tends to be Maine's offense. Seemed especially in the third period that the D gave clear lanes to the net for the shooters. And Maine obliged by taking lots of long range shots that DiGi easily (most of the time) handled.

Winning at least a quarter of the faceoffs would be a nice touch as well...

That would be enjoyable. I already have my tickets for the NCAA Northeast Regional in Manchester the weekend of March 26th. If UNH is fortunate enough to be there, it could be a great opportunity to touch base with some of us UNH fanatics.

Whenever I see your name, I think of the most amazing two minutes of hockey I ever saw. Am I remembering the folllowing correctly?

#1 (ECAC) UNH vs. #8 RPI, single elimination format, 1974.

Our terrific goaltender, Cap Raeder, tries to play badly hurt (no lateral movement) and gives up several goals before he is replaced by untested freshman Dan Magnarelli (who quickly gives up a very weak one himself from center ice).

Matching double minors are then called, and Charlie sends out your three to handle the 4 on 4.

Magic. Three quick goals, and I think RPI scarcely touched the puck! Simply the best tick-tack-toe artistry I've ever seen.

Sadly, we lost 6-5 in OT, and under the format back then, that one loss meant season over. But I'll never forget those two minutes!

Do I have that anywhere close to right? :-) Had a hard time handling that loss -- spent a long time walking on Edgewood Road that night trying to come to grips with it, because that was such a terrific squad we had!...

That's pretty much what happened. I'm going to put a video clip from the Channel 11 coverage up on youtube as soon as I figure out how to do it.
Only thing to add - UNH was ranked #1 in the nation that season for the first time ever.
