Now 5-5 -- what the hell is happening in this four-goal-lead collapse?
OK -- here's the other anecdote...
When I was in Cambridge, UNH was the better team. But year in and year out, could NEVER manage to beat Harvard. Remember that both were in the ECAC then -- there as as yet no Hockey East -- so they played each other regularly.
I used to go to Bright every year, cheering for the Wildcats to all my friends' annoyance (and their eventual glee). Brand new Bright had just replaced the old Watson Arena (see the awful movie Love Story) -- that's what rich alumnae can do for you).
UNH coach Charlie Holt was very good friends with Harvard Coach Bill Cleary (who along with his brother was on the now forgotten 1960 Olympic Gold Medal squad). Like brotherss.
And just like brothers, Cleary teased Holt merciless about his team's record against Charlie's. I could detail some of the language he used, but it was both blunt and humorous (and could get me in trouble on the Board if I did so).
By the way, both teams had great success back then against other ones. Harvard actually won the NCAA championship just a few years later -- an astounding accomplishment for a top drawer Ivy.
And UNH won the ECAC title with an awesome 3-2 win over Dartmouth in the last all New Hampshire championship game you'll ever see. I had a great seat in the area that almost hung directly over the ice in the old Boston Garden.
Just to add icing to that crown, the very late tie-breaker winning goal was scored by the guy who's still one of my favorite UNH players -- defensive forward Bobby Gould. Number 17 nets the winner at 17:17 of the third peried. Honest.
Still 5-5. This is where we could use a true sniper forward...
