UNH at Harvard, Tuesday 11.22.2011

Re: HU 0 UNH 4, 1st Intermission

Re: HU 0 UNH 4, 1st Intermission

OK -- here's one that comes to mind quickly...

Joey Bertagna used to be (a very good) Harvard goalie. He loved playing at Snively, until one particular incident...

As you might know, in my prehistoric era, there was no glass behind the goals -- it was chain link fencing (one trick -- player A pins opposing player B's face against the meshing, while player arrives to rub player B laterally along it).

Fance used to stand against the fencing right behind the goal. During timeouts and faceoffs at the other end, Joey noticed a particular comely coed right behind him who also seemed seet and demure.

Bad assumption.

He made eyes at her at every opportunity. At the third or fourth time, she screamed at the top of oher lungs from two feet away, "FU_K YOU!!!".

Excellent devotion to UNH hockey!:D
Ha! :) Excellent.

Ha! :) Excellent.
True story. Bertagna himself related it in a short-lived and very cool UNH student newspaper (there was of course no Internet then) named The Puckster.

Not sure if this is the same game, but Harvard stormed into Snively one year when Bertagna was the goalie, number one in the country. UNH won in OT on a Guy Smith goal. I was told years after, by John Gray I believe, that it was kicked in. I asked Bertagna and he confirmed it. No matter.

Another chain link story. Years ago I got friendly with Mike Sanford, who played at Northeastern in the Chris Nilan days, when Fernie Flaman was the coach. His Snively story is how the coach prepped them for the game. Fernie told his boys that the fans were brutal up in New Hampshire, they screamed, swore, and spit on the players. He told them if got too rough, just go up to the chain link and butt end them through the fence. Never saw that actually happened, but the fans, particularly down the end under the overhang, were brutal.

One Harvard story, not involving UNH. Back in the day when the first round of the NCAAs were at campus sites, Harvard played Lake State at the Bright Center. Lake State brought their band along and, between periods, they started playing "Cocaine" by Eric Clapton (actually it's a J.J. Cale song}. Without missing a beat, those clever Harvard fans started chanting "just say no, just say no" in homage to Nancy Reagan. Way back, during the Watson Rink days, the band would kick off with an instrumental called "The Stripper" (for you youngins, it was sort of a burlesque tune) and one guy in the student section would always strip down to his jock strap.

I can also remember being a goal judge at Watson Rink, for one period, in a game between UNH and Northeastern. Fortunately no goals were scored.

Re: HU 0 UNH 4, Period 1

CAts to the PP, hopefully this will turn the game back to Cats favor

HU 2 UNH 4, Period 2

HU 2 UNH 4, Period 2

Harvard kills it, UNH 1 for 3 now.

Then UNH, Kipp, going off for interference. A "bad call" says Parkhurst.
