UNH 2024/2025 Goldberg Edition

Mini-quiz, just to test everyone's short-term memory and retention skills (FWIW I failed badly), without looking it up ...

Name UNH's back-up goalie, who finished the season after Whale's injury at BC, after sitting out all season?
The real question is can I get the spelling without looking it up...

Rico DiMatteo

It's been somewhat oddly silent around UNH Hockey these last couple of weeks, other than all the rampant complaining and speculation going on around here. Only Babbage in the portal to date, as I understand it? Again, seems odd. Almost feels like the calm before the storm ... at the very least, one would hope/expect MS7 and his guys would be burning up the lines of communication to maximize this year's portal experience ...
No more 'oddly quiet' than usual? Shoot I'm still looking for some kind of UL 'wrap up' story or some kind of 'end of season' rather than the push to renew our STix....maybe I missed it?
I imagine they've already had the banquet..usually the players who win the awards are announced but have yet to see them as well.
But see these are things fans who give a darn about aren't deemed important. And this is where UNH hockey misses the boat and esp when the 603 Challenge is coming up.
Give us something to get excited about and the wallets will open?

UNH has seven freshmen this year that will be 21 when arriving at Durham in October.😎
I like it. UNH has no shot at blue chip 18 and 19 year olds. None. They go to BU, BC, sometimes NU or Providence, Harvard or Cornell in the east. UNH should stick to the older kids because they at least have the experience and physical strength to neutralize some the skill difference. Of course UNH must pick and properly coach the RIGHT young men. That's been a problem.

It's a product of bad choices bye the coaching staff. Most players that signed their LOI's have been deferred up to two years. I agree UNH has little chance of getting blue chips and that falls on the coaching staff and the Athletic director.

Fans are nothing more than an inconvenient nuisance to the powers that be at UNH. Give them table scraps and the occasional big win to satiate them just enough to keep season ticket renewals at an acceptable level.

There is an expectation from UNH that STH and the occasional fan should open their wallets, give generously and blindly accept the gross mismanagement of a program with annual sub .500 records.

Enough is enough.

With a coach who has publicly disappeared like a fugitive, an AD who surrounds herself with a buffering of UNH paid toadies to avoid the hard core fans and a tacit lack of acknowledgement that the program has fallen of a cliff, it's quite presumptuous to assume long term fans aren't going to ask questions and challenge the status quo.

Truth be told, we are fed up.

Results matter. Visibility matters. Communication matters. Most importantly, accountability matters.

Say what you want about Umile, he was the public face of a very succesful program that, unfortunately, could never cross the rubicon to championship glory. He was seen. He engaged with the press and worked the fans, donors to build a community of support.

MS7, well, what does he do? Never engages with fans. Nary a quote or interview with the press unless it's a puff piece. Nice guy reputation or not, he is isolating himself into obscurity and, hopefully, a buyout from his undeserved contract.

Let's be real, our AD, fka SB, is a Compliance Director, not an Athletic Director.

As long as UNH continues to check the boxes with the NCAA overseers and the status quo is maintained, she doesn't get fired and all is well in her world.

Souza's failure to communicate with the public and act as the face of a program is an especially egregious mistake. My guess is that he believes that doing so will only generate more negativity. What can he really say that's helpful. Whoevers next will run into a similar problem but it is time for the next person. But that won't occur until 2027.

How many casual fans could pick MS7 out of a lineup?

You are so confused. The program shouldn't be promoting itself and looking for donations. The horror. NO, just raise fees on students and get Concord to "commit" to the program by making it rain. How DARE you expect private donations to fund things at public universities. You free loading hillbilly... FOR SHAME, FOR SHAME

Oh, Elwood, it's rather optimistic of you to go with ironic humor. Stick to counting with your fingers. Raise fees!!!!! Oh, heavens, god forbid you actual pay your own way in life. It's far more respectable to just harass wealthy people into building things that are the responsibility of the taxpayers.

The insistence among many on this board on taking glancing shots at Conmy at any opportunity is so bizarre...
This isn't a glancing shot, but a testament to how loaded those teams of the late 90s/early 00s really were.

Conmy can join the pantheon of great UNH players when he makes All American or even all Hockey East Team.

Did you ever see those teams play? Ever watch Krog or Haydar play? How about Saviano or Hemmingway? Mowers or Gare?

Year after year UNH brought the talent to Durham and they performed. There is nothing in Conmy's game to suggest he's a future All American or 50 point scorer.

Still waiting for 1 example, in the last 25 years, of hockey facilities new or upgraded that were not fully or majority funded by donations at public universities.

NOTE: tons of things are funded by getting lots of small donations from poor, middle and upper middle class people.

When a coach, the figurehead of any collegiate sports program, ignores his/her fanbase for the better of a decade, guess what, those fans shut their wallets and begin to lose interest.

You reap what you sow.

Thats what happened to Timmay time in Orono

And this is the reason Souza should be evangelizing his program every place he can and...

wait for it....

fund raising to upgrade his team facilities.

Yep! I watched all those teams play, granted I was very young. I am a lifelong UNH fan, just new-ish to this board. I don't think there are many bandwagon folks commenting on a team that hasn't done anything impressive in two decades.

The choice to highlight the talent on those teams by putting down Conmy is my point. It is constant on here, like the quote from you when remarking on my putting Lavins on the fourth line (which is totally fair to critique) "I would much rather build a team around Marty than Conmy." You do it in the very post I'm replying to, remarking that he won't be an All American or 50 point scorer, which I haven't seen anyone suggest.

It seems to be largely negative commentary around him, which I can't understand given I haven't seen anything like an attitude problem that would warrant it, he is seemingly a nice, hardworking kid. Am I missing something?

That you can't provide just one, shows you are full of sh!t.

Elephant hunting is high risk

I think he has a MAJOR attitude problem based on his (very) limited public interaction with fans and snarky comments made to kids looking for nothing more than a fist bump or autograph.

I know I'm not alone in this assessment. The hockey community is small and word gets around.

Putting that aside, his game stands out because he is a skilled player on an underperforming team. He has three basic moves which surpised opponents his frosh year, but were expected and countered this season.

Like Cy, he has bad body language on ice when things don't go his way and has tendencies towards laziness on the defensive side of the ice.

He is a quick skater with a strong shot, but unless something changes dramatically, he isn't a superstar and won't be anything near an all time UNH great.

BTW, I didn't say he wouldn't be an All American or All Hockey East. I said there is nothing currently in his game to suggest he would be. For the sake of the team, I hope he is, but with two seasons under his belt, I'm not overly optimistic.

Based on the sample size, he is a better than average player but not a special, once in a generation player. Not even close.

Liam Blackburn syndrome. Put them with a few similar skill, effort players and see what happens!
