UNH 2024/2025 Goldberg Edition

One note on the experience from yesterday....Is the Center of New Hampshire parking garage the worst garage on earth for getting out of? Sat motionless for a near half hour before getting out of there. Have had many similar experiences there previously.

The garage next to Tsongas gives it a run for its money in that respect. But they are both terrible

Never park there, it is horrible.

I always find someplace else. I won't give away the best spot, sorry. A good spot is the garages closer to the Palace Theatre (as long as there isn't a show at the same time). Couple block walk and you can get out of it in reasonably fast.

Street park. Free on Sundays. 10 hour limit, free after 8PM two+ blocks off Elm St. Don’t stray TOO far off Elm if not familiar with Manch though. Manch parking not an issue for a while as Manch is not on the future regional sites list. Anyone know why? I’m guessing UNH decided not to host.

Did you look at the list of eastern regional sites in coming years?

In 2028 NCAA Hockey abandons New England with the two eastern regionals in Allenstown Pa and Rochester NY. For years the best "selling" regionals (nationally) were within a couple hours of Boston (Manchester, Worchester, Providence). Hence the campus site (Yost) problems out west. Even in 2027 it is Amherst and Bridgeport both further out. For some reason, I assume schools willing to bid, the NCAAs are moving further from the traditional eastern sites with a concentration of local D1 school to boost attendance.

I think we have seen our last in Manchester in the foreseeable future. No AHL or ECHL team in that building so no ice. The net problems were likely the new ice and the falling players I assume were the new ice quality. I am sure the cost of putting the ice down for the event make it less desirable for UNH to bid as host.

Was able to park on the street for free both days right behind the arena less than a 100 meters from the back entrance. Pays to have local knowledge.

I don't think UNH has the staff to put on a regional, at least to do it the right way. And with Metcalf gone they don't have anybody with a clue how to organize things. A UNH guy with a lot of pride and he worked his tail off,

I’ve no inside info or knowledge, but this weekend felt like it compared to prior regionals we’ve hosted.

Yeah. The rest of the team played great. An average D-2 keeper and the 'cats win it all that year.

I am sure that you are being facetious, but I always have thought that Matt Carney deserved the start in the Maine semi-finals FF game in 2002, as he was a senior and had split games evenly with sophomore Ayers the entire season, both finishing with nearly identical records:
Matt Carney, 21 games, 1254 minutes, 52 goals against, 2,49 GAA, 496 saves, 0.905 SV%, 16-3-2
Mike Ayers, 20 games, 1129 minutes, 46 goals against, 2.44 GAA, 493 saves, 0.915 SV%, 14-3-1
Tim Collins, 4 games, 39 minutes, 3 goals against, 4.62 GAA, 24 saves, 0.889 SV%, 0-1-0

My recollection is that Carney won the HEA championship game 3-1 against Maine at the Garden, and then Ayers won the NCAA regional game 4-3 against Cornell in Woostah, supposedly when the UHN placards made their appearance from the upper level corner (I always thought it was the Xcel Center two weeks later, but the Pro From Dover corrected me). Maybe Umile thought that Ayers would give the Black Bears a different look after the HEA Garden championship game?

I was not in Orono for the weekend series at the beginning of February 2002, but I thought that Tim Collins, the UNH Club Hockey goalie, finished the game in which Ayers got his wrist slashed, giving up three goals and taking the 6-3 loss (i.e., Collins was already in Orono as the backup goalie). Matt Carney driving to Orono and then being told he could not go in the Sunday game because of his concussion protocol as JB posted is also my recollection.

The other irony to me about the back-to-back NC’s for the Gophers was that the only non-Minnesotan players each year scored the winning goals, Grant Potulny from Grand Forks, North Dakota, and Thomas Vanek from Graz, Austria.

I'm 99% certain Ayers played in the HEA title game, which was a 3-1 UNH win. UMaine changed up its goalies for the FF (Morrison instead of Yeats IIRC?).

Carney won the Cornell game (4-3), but gave up 3 goals in 18 shots. So while Umile was still rotating, Ayers was gonna get the nod vs. UMaine regardless, and almost certainly gonna play in the Final vs. Minnesota had he not hacked up his legendary hairball. A shame, 'cuz he had a strong postseason the next year, including a 2OT shutout in the HEA Finals vs. BU, and remains UNH's goalie of record in most of the greatest wins in program history.

1000000% Ayers in the Hockey East Championship game:

1) I remember him completely robbing a Maine player of a wide open back door goal. It was headed for the back of the net and the glove came out of nowhere to snag it

2) I just Googled the game recap...

Ayers had a 4 game run on BU

1-0
2-0
3-0
4-0

250+ minute shutout streak against BU. I remember because after the 4-0 game Parker had some comment like "OK, so we are going the wrong way against this guy". Laughter makes a memory stick

Hadn't thought about those Wildcat teams in a long time.

Great recall, with Ayers 4-0 win at BU coming on 7 Nov 03, preceded by three wins the latter part of the previous season, 3-0 on 29 Mar 03 in Worcester, aforementioned 1-0 ot on 15 Mar 03 at Fleet, and 3-0 on 25 Jan 03 at Whitt. However, Ayers lost 2-5 on 23 Jan 03 at BU and 2-3 on 2 Nov 02 at Whitt.

I found the box scores for Ayers 3-1 win against Maine in Mar 02 at Fleet and Carney’s win the next week in Worcester, so had those backwards in my failing memory.

Those UNH teams were so loaded that Conmy would likely have played on the third or fourth line, and Devlin and LeClerc maybe the fourth line.

Good thing that UNH caught Bentley at the beginning of this past season as there is no way that the Cats would have beaten the Falcons later in the season.

I see the Bentley goalie Hasley is in the transfer portal. Is UNH in market for a transfer goalie again?

It's been somewhat oddly silent around UNH Hockey these last couple of weeks, other than all the rampant complaining and speculation going on around here. Only Babbage in the portal to date, as I understand it? Again, seems odd. Almost feels like the calm before the storm ... at the very least, one would hope/expect MS7 and his guys would be burning up the lines of communication to maximize this year's portal experience ...

Mini-quiz, just to test everyone's short-term memory and retention skills (FWIW I failed badly), without looking it up ...

Name UNH's back-up goalie, who finished the season after Whale's injury at BC, after sitting out all season?
