UNH 2024/2025 Goldberg Edition

Da Whale keeping us in this horse race of a first period. In fact both goalies playing tough. We could use some sustained offense.

Bentley was much better in the first than UNH, Whale playing especially well to earn a tie heading into the intermission.

Conmy scores for UNH against all run of play. Bentley equalizes shorthanded on a poor UNH turnover below the defensive blue line.

Broadcast mentions LeClerc and Jensen as week-to-week injuries. Leaves me to assume the second MacPherson might be a healthy scratch - which is disappointing.

Attendance is awful.

Meant to drop this last week - I very much fear Maine is a wagon this year. They haven't played any one of note, but they've done exactly what you should do against no one of note thus far. Next weekend at QU will be telling...

I could see UNH finishing as high as third and as low as eighth - though I am less bullish after 20.

Unless Jared Whale is a total bust, this team should win 20 games again this season, assuming that they stay reasonably injury-free. Any fewer than 20 wins, I lay on the coaching staff.

Student section doing 'Whale sounds' on his saves! A bright spot so far tonight...stay out of the box 'Cats!!

Through 40 minutes Bentley is dominating the game; frankly Whale has 'stolen' the Wildcats an opportunity to win this game in the third...

UNH being outshot, out chanced and out possessed decisively.

By comparison Maine outscored their two AHA opponents (AIC & Army Exh.) 11-0, outshooting them 76-25.

Ugly start.

UNH looked/looks lost at even strength, but almost cashed in a strong 2nd PP. 3rd PP to follow halfway thru 3rd.

Going to overtime. Underwhelming, wouldn't you agree Dan?

Extremely underwhelming. UNH was outplayed - significantly - for most of the game, and struggled to even possess the puck until the mid-third period PP you mentioned earlier. They didn't start skating and asserting themselves until late in the third and OT...

A fortunate overtime PP and they'll escape with the win, but that was not a good start IMO. Better to learn a lesson in a win, but they have a lot to learn from tonight...

The Good:
* Whale was excellent

The Must Improve:
* Everything else

Edit - I know it's not the early '00s any longer, but I am shocked by the opening night crowd (without another home game this month to boot)...

I know you guys probably don't care for my opinion but it's wierd you guys look good for stretches then almost lethargic and slow. I don't know if this is a reflection on the coach or not.

All opinions in good faith (or good humor) are welcome, groovy. Very lucky to get the W, but a W is a W, so ... :)

Dan - totally agree, Whale took a huge step towards quelling the Hellsten anxieties tonight. Very impressed.

In other news ... UNH Men's Soccer (3W-3L-5D) has somewhat predictably receded with Coach Hubbard at NC State this season, where they are 5-2-4 after a 6-9-3 season last year. It was really fun and nice while it lasted ... :(

A couple observations: Jenson not in lineup, nor LeClerc and one of the twins. Walsh IS dressed.

Of the five games the teams have now played, all have been one-goal games, with two OT’s, except for the Bentley 5-1 win at the Whitt in October 2016.

Bentley commonly plays better against HEA teams than they do against Atlantic Hockey teams, although the AH coach’s poll has the Falcons finishing fourth this season. I think that UNH has a long history of playing down to their opponents, even back in their hay days of the late 90s to early 00’s.

In an annual friends and family pool, I have UNH going 21-10-4 through one playoff game. Good to read that everyone here was happy with Jared Whale’s play in net tonight, which I think is key to another winning season. Will be good to get Leclerc and Jensen back, but whaasup with Connor MacPherson not in the lineup tonight?

The two teams Maine played both had long bus rides and have lots of new players. I think Maine is a decent team but don’t see the two wins being super meaningful.

Maine got barely scraped by Bentley last year and got their *** kicked by them two years ago. It really is remarkable they can play HEA teams so tough and then suck in their own conference.
